They spent one more day inside the forest, camping through the night under the heavy showers and cold breezes. Jake used whatever gold he had left to build sturdy tent sticks. Ashe tried to wish for a huge cloth to appear to make a tent, but she knew better about the first law of nature.
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. She could only wish for things that are already there. There was an awkward tension between Holland and the rest, Luvi and Ocean and last of all, a weird silence between Ashe and Jake.
They both were lost in thought as they sat up together at dawn to keep watch for monsters and danger while the other took a nap. Jake leaned forward and kindled the fire, waving at it to keep it going.
"No need," Ashe whispered, rubbing her eyes. "The sun's about to rise."
Jake looked up slowly and saw little tufts of light escape the horizon and he left the pieces of wood alone in its sad, lonely pile.
