Humans were truthfully an amazing species. I smirked to myself at the thought, but that made me realize something. Why the elves were so intent on killing off all the dragons. They couldn't take the world from us by force in the first place. That was why they didn't attack us again.
They were waiting for our world to die so they could bring their own origin species in to revive the planet as one they could live on. My body tensed as I thought about the bullshit the elves pulled. My existence was setting their plan back by weeks for everyday I lived. They didn't know I was here yet. The one elf that had seen me was dead.
Once they found out I was here then we would have more problems. Then add on the fact that the island wouldn't have enough to keep two dragons full. I knew that I didn't plan on dying any time soon so I needed to make sure they didn't find out about me for now. My wings twitched as I thought about it. That sixty day mark was coming far faster than I was prepared for.
The system wouldn't give me a countdown for when the egg would hatch. Stating that nature would take it's coarse. I waited two whole days past the sixty day mark before the light went out. I thought something was wrong or that maybe the egg had died until I felt a painful jolt in the egg pouch. I brought the egg up, and set it down in front of me.
Savannah, Ethan, and most of the wolfpack came over to see what would come out of the mysterious egg I'd been taking care of. The egg had lost its light, and all that was left on the outside was plain grey shell.
Warning egg is hatching. Please keep egg warm, and moist. It will slow down if it gets too cold. If hatching takes too long then egg will not hatch.
I switched to infrared to keep an eye on the eggs temperature. It was hard to tell what was inside of the shell, but that only made it more exciting. I wondered if the hatchling would be like me when I first turned into a dragon. Small, soft, and full of energy when I was awake. Only time would tell.
When the eggs temperature started to drop I picked it up, and let it rest in the heat of my mouth for a little while. Most of the people watching lost interest in watching the drakeling hatch simply because it was taking so long. Even Savannah had other stuff she wanted to get done while waiting on such a time consuming task. Ethan was the only one that was on the edge of his seat from the beginning, and remained that way even now. Each time I'd take the egg out, and check its progress Ethan would point out the little differences in how it was cracked.
The cracked spot widened until eventually something pushed from inside the shell. Slowly the crack widened until the end of the shell broke away, and out came a fleshy grey blob of soft scales. She just laid there for a few minutes breathing hard. As if hatching was a lot of work. She shivered slightly, but her temperature stopped going down as she dried, and started holding steady.
Ethan walked forward, and picked up the smoky grey colored hatchling which drew some gentle purring out of her. Her big silver colored eyes opened as she cocked her head at Ethan. Her purr was momentarily silenced when she looked at me. She cocked her head at me before crawling up on Ethan's shoulder, and trying to jump at me. Her jump was way too short to actually reach me so I had to catch her before she fell.
She looked up at me quietly. She was demanding food this time. I complied with her demands willingly. Giving her some scraps I hadn't eaten yet. I'd gotten in the habit of making sure I had fresh meat with me at all times during the last few days.
I decided to call her Aurora after the northern lights because of the glow her egg had given off. She was a little ball of energy when she wasn't eating or sleeping she played with anyone, and everyone when she was awake. Her claws were sharp so we had to keep her away from the kids. There were no reports of anyone coming to help the wolves even two months after the initial attack. The wolves were learning of just how much the people of the military didn't want to save them.
There wasn't much I could do about it all. I was irritated at the military's utter irresponsibility. If the military wanted to blatantly leave us all to die then why should we tell them we're doing fine. That we'd long since recovered from the attack, and were thriving in the absence of the military's influence. Tension ran through my muscles as I thought about it.
Humans may be incredible creatures, but they were fools sometimes. Angering a species that could do things they couldn't. Could help them in ways they couldn't even begin to imagine. It was a stupid decision on their part. I knew I wouldn't be able to stay here for much longer.
This little girl would need most the meat on the island soon enough if she followed my own growth pattern. I would need to figure out where to go from here. I didn't like the idea of leaving Aurora behind by herself. The wolves seemed to like her, but she wasn't exactly on speaking terms with anyone yet. She was only mimicking syllables right now.
No actual words. I would feel a lot better if there was someone who could speak for her. I felt my wings start twitching as I thought about it. It was only a matter of time before someone came to see what was going on here. I wondered how much longer it would take.
