Wyatt stirred in his sleep, but didn't wake. He was splayed out on the floor, and didn't seem to be in pain anymore. He'd even regenerated a good amount of his body mass, and didn't look like a skeleton bagged in scaly skin anymore. He was still to thin to look healthy, but some of the shine had come back to his scales, and the missing ones had regrown. He didn't have any burnt spots anymore either.
After opening the connection a little, and not feeling pain coming through, I opened it up the rest of the way. The exhaustion he felt right now was even enough for me to feel a bit heavy. I went up to where Ethan was sitting on the floor next to Wyatt's head, and sat down next to him as I gently stroked his smooth scales.
"How's he doing?" I asked without looking at Ethan.
"Much better than he was doing," Ethan answered.
"I can tell that much," I stroked his scales again, more for myself than him, "How is he doing?"
"It's hard to tell," I could hear the frown in his voice, "He was like that time with the mind seeder when he woke up. Solely focused on the kill, and starving. He ate everything that she brought him."
"At least this spirit lady isn't hostile," I murmured to myself.
"Do you think she'd be willing to bring us something to eat?" Ethan asked.
"Of course I would," the spirit woman answered, "I'm afraid I can't prepare it for you though. I never learned how to prepare foods for humans."
"I know how to cook," I stood up, and nodded to the spirit woman, "Ethan can help."
The white spirit waved her hand, and a portal opened for a live rabbit to fall through. I was not prepared for this. An hour, and some figuring out later we had some bland poorly cooked rabbit to eat. I knew how to cook with spices, and a stove, but I'd never cooked with fresh meat like this before. We convinced Jax to come out, and eat with us in an awkward silence.
We didn't know each other all that well, but we were all attached to Wyatt so we'd have to learn to get along sometime.
"So Jax," I glanced his way, "Wyatt isn't in pain anymore so your bond to him shouldn't hurt anymore. You should open it back up, and get used to the feel of it."
"Why would I do that?" Jax snapped, "I didn't want to be attached to him in the first place."
"Sorry," Ethan snapped, "That this is such a burden for you, but Wyatt cannot form a bond with anyone unless they want it too."
Jax flinched as if he'd been slapped, "But I didn't. I don't think I wanted." he shook his head, and stood up, "I don't think I did anything to deserve this."
Jax stormed off. Probably back to his room. He thought he was being punished. I seriously doubt Wyatt did this on purpose. Wyatt had let him in his head, and Jax did something in there to cause this.
I'd be willing to bet they were both at fault for this somehow. Wyatt always dished out punishment in a physical way. There was no way he would have punished him in a mental way. I didn't think he was smart enough for that. Then add on the fact that Jax's bond was unusually strong.
This wasn't the normal kind of punishment Wyatt would dish out. A part of me wanted to know what happened between Jax, and Wyatt, but Jax wouldn't talk to me right now. All we could do was wait until he woke up, and endure for now.
"You should sleep," I looked over to Wyatt, "I'll keep an eye on him for now."
Ethan nodded, and stood up to go to his room. He wouldn't have a hard time finding it. It was the only room no one had used yet after all. I don't know how long I sat there just stroking Wyatt's scales before the spirit's voice startled me.
"He will wake soon," She floated in the center of the room, "He has eaten enough that I think he'll be able to think properly this time. I will bring more for him to eat just in case."
"Why are you helping us?" I looked at her curiously.
"Because my previous master asked me to," she answered without the slightest hint of emotion like usual.
"I don't think your previous master asked you to take care of us as well as save us," I retorted, "So why are you helping us?"
"Oh dear," Her voice sounded amused, "It seems that I'm caught." she floated down until her feet were touching the ground, "I would like to be contracted as his familiar."
"You'd overpower him easily," I stood up defensively.
I'd heard of that happening before. A familiar overpowering their master, and taking control of them. She laughed at that, and walked towards me with such grace that it was hard to believe she was walking.
"I'm not interested in that," she spoke in a tone that sounded amused, "I'm more interested in what he will become. Walking beside a beast that has the power to take the world as his own." she spread her arms slowly, and gracefully, "Like I once did in the time of the dragons."
"The time of the dragons?" I could almost feel my jaw drop.
The time of the dragons? The way she spoke of it sounded like they ruled the world once. I couldn't picture it. None of our history had mentioned dragons as more than a passing fairy tale story. None of the fossils we'd gathered were that of a dragon.
How was it possible that we'd lost an entire era of history? I didn't understand. We had dug up so many ancient ruins, and we thought we had it all figured out, but what if we didn't. What if there was another era in our past that we'd completely lost? How would it effect the world as it was now if that era came back to us?
