Chapter 20 - The Caves of Dodongos

The cave was dark, although not so dark, because he could see perfectly a crack in the wall in front and two bomb flowers on the sides. Link took a bomb flower and threw it into the crack, assuming that it would break showing more way, and indeed, it broke and Link arrived at what seemed to be the main room, which was very large. It had two bridges on the top floor, one to the north and one to the south. There were two shelves on the west and east sides of the room, on the lower floor, and what attracted the most attention was a platform in the center surrounded by dry lava on the floor and also three platforms that rose and fell to reach the platform from the center from the two ledges and from where Link was in the south. Also in the background, under the bridge and behind the platform in the center was a large stone head shaped like a dragon.

Link went to the center platform and saw an enemy in the shape of a statue, which had an eye on its head that turned and on its belly it had a mouth showing evil teeth. Navi said that this statue was called Beamos and that it threw lightning through the eye, and they didn't like smoke in it. Link figured he should throw a bomb flower at him, but since there wasn't any, he headed to the west ledge.

There were three spaces to enter rooms, separated by two pillars. The first (the one at the back) had a door with bars; the second (the middle one), was another crack in the wall; and the third one had nothing, it could happen normally.

In the back pillar there was a bomb flower and in the other a Beamos. Link tried to use the flower with the Beamos and successfully the head came off the statue and in a few seconds the head and belly exploded.

Then Link decided to go to space first with nothing and saw another bush, and he was already preparing with the shield when he saw that the monster was different, it was green again, but its body was brown and it did not look as evil as the others. He was still throwing nuts and Link used the shield to attack him back. When he did, the monster came out and tried to sell Link a Deku shield, but since Link already had one, the monster went back in.

Link was somewhat puzzled by that, but continued with the space in between, in which he used the bomb flower again. When it exploded, Link discovered a chest, opened it and discovered a map, like the one he had discovered in the Great Deku Tree, but this time there were more rooms. He supposed it was the map of the Cave of the Dodongos.

Since the other space had a barred door, Link decided to go to the east ledge. In this other there were also three spaces. The first and third had a crack, and the second could not be reached, as it was too high for Link. And as on the opposite shelf there was a Beamos on a pillar, but this time the bomb flower was in the center.

Link used the bomb flower against the Beamos and the cracks. In the first there was a stone with a strange symbol that she felt she had seen before. Navi told her that she felt like she wanted to tell them something and that there was a fairy hidden in her. Since Link couldn't do anything at the moment, he decided to continue. When the other rift exploded, a corridor opened before her and she continued to advance.

The next room had wooden planks on the walls and was still a corridor, but curving. As Link advanced, lizard-like monsters approached. Navi told him that he had found some minidodongs. A blow with the sword was enough for them to turn around and seconds later to explode. A little further on there was another crack, but there were no bomb flowers nearby, although other minidodongs did appear and then an idea occurred to him: he used them so that, when he killed them, they would explode in the crack. He did so and the crack opened, revealing a door in the background.

In the next room, there was a torch in the center and some enemies behind, but instead of killing them, Link decided to go back and leave them there. He continued walking through the room in the form of a corridor and came to a place where there was a door with bars, a platform to reach it, on the sides of this statues like guards and in front of the platform a switch, but different from the ones that until that moment he had seen. The others were yellow, but this one was blue.

Link decided to operate it and the bars of the door were removed, but as soon as Link removed the bars they reappeared. He supposed he had to be on the switch all the time to get through, but it was impossible to do so, although he looked at the statues and came up with another idea: he pushed one of the two on the switch. When activated, the bars were removed and thus it could pass.

He came to a hall with some Keese, but he ignored them and continued through the door at the end, which, as Link entered the next room, was closed with bars and Link saw that the room had many platforms in a lake of lava dry, with a pillar in the center. It was really hot. Some lizard-like monsters called Lizalfos appeared. They were wearing armor and a sword, which seemed very strange to Link, since they were animals.

Using the shield and sword very well, he was able to defeat them, and thus continued through the door opposite the one he left. He came to a corridor that at first curved to the left and in the curve there was a crack. In contrast to the environment of the previous room, that room was very cold and had a blue color (the other was red, due to the lava).

As Link walked down the hall he came to a larger room, with several pillars, bomb flowers at the beginning, and some larger armored lizards that resembled minidodongs. As he approached, Navi told him that these were the famous dodongs and to be careful with their fire breath. Link, as he could not attack him head on or on the back, decided to do it on the tail, which made the dodongs spin before attacking again.

A few blows of the sword were enough for the dodongs to fall in exhaustion and, like the minidodongs, explode after a few seconds. Link believed that by defeating them, the barred door at the end would open, but it didn't. Then he noticed the unlit torches that he hadn't seen, but one was, at the front of the room. He walked there and saw the bomb flowers and remembered the crevice in the hallway. He went to her with a flower and exploded it. A door appeared behind and, upon entering that room, he saw another thicket that, upon defeating him, tried to sell him Deku Sticks, but Link already had enough, so that the thicket disappeared underground.

Link returned to the other room and, with the help of a Deku Stick, lit the missing torches and the door at the end opened. Looking at the map, he realized that he was in a corridor of the main room, the one with the dragon head, but in the space on the east ledge that he could not reach and in which there was a switch, this time yellow.

Link triggered it and the barred door on the west ledge opened, so Link walked over there and entered. The next room started with a corridor and opened into a square room with what appeared to be a wide but unreachable staircase in the center. Circulating the staircase were bomb flowers and in front of it a crack and another bomb flower to the left. Not to be left in doubt, Link exploited the crack and entered through the door behind it.

Immediately the door was barred shut, but Link saw no enemies, only three statues on the opposite side of the room, the same as the guards with which he operated the blue switch, and a chest hidden behind them. When Link tried to remove the one in the middle, it came to life and began to attack Link, who wanted to attack him with the sword but could not. Navi said it was called Armos and only with a bomb could it be destroyed. Fortunately there were two bomb flowers there. Link took one and lunged. The Armos began to spin and blink all over red until it too exploded.

The bars were removed and Link went to the chest, in which was the Compass that, as in the Great Deku Tree, revealed the location of treasures in the dungeon. She left that room and when she saw the staircase and the bomb flowers circulating, she decided to put the bomb flower that was apart between a gap between the stairs and when it exploded, they all exploded with it, causing the staircase to fall to a.

Link climbed up and saw that the path forked, but he didn't care, because the two of them came to the opposite side of where he was, that is, where the crack was, but above. Once there he saw some vines, although different from the one he had seen so far. They had two spiders, one just like the ones he had seen stuck in the vines behind the chest of the Great Deku Tree map and a different one but which he felt he had already seen in many other places and which up to that point he had ignored.

He killed both of them with the Resortera, although the one who was different gave him as a reward a golden seal with a skull on it. Navi told him that it was a golden Skulltula and that he had seen it on previous occasions, but did not remember them. The other spider was called Skullwalltula.

Link continued through the door, which was barred shut upon entering, and came to a circular room with several Keese engulfed in flames, another barred door on the left side of the room, and a pillar in the center with a yellow switch above it. and four statues of Armos escorting the pillar that had a staircase on one side.

First he killed the Keese and then made sure that the statue where the pillar ladder was did not come to life. Fortunately not, so he went upstairs, flipped the switch, and both doors opened. Link went the opposite way and reached the main room of the cave but on the upper floor, on one of the bridges (the one near the entrance), in which there were other Keese on fire. Link killed them and saw that the bridge was hollow in the middle, so he jumped to get to the other side and continued down the corridor that followed him.

The next room had two levels and several pillars, some reached the ceiling and others to a certain extent, making the room, on the lower level, had many narrow corridors, in which, in some, there were blades, so Link had very careful to cross. When he came to a stone block next to a ladder he knew that the pillars ended up there, so he climbed the block and then the ladder, but found that there was a crack just as he climbed the ladder. He turned around and saw a pillar that he could climb from there with a bomb flower and a small chest, so he jumped onto the pillar, took the flower and threw it into the crevice. This exploded and so Link was able to continue, but not before taking the twenty rupees that were in the chest.

The next room also had two levels, but there was nothing important in the lower one, but in the upper one there were three shelves, in which Link was, one in the middle and one on the other side, to continue. The problem was that in the middle there was a beam of fire. Link saw that there was an eye on the other side, like the one he saw in the Great Deku Tree, so he threw a seed at it with the Spring and the eye closed, making the fire beam disappear.

Link jumped to the ledge to get to the next one and thus continued down a corridor that had what seemed to be strange bones in the ceiling and that from time to time some minidodongs would come out of the floor. When he defeated them, he continued advancing to a door, which was barred after Link entered.

He returned to a room with a lava lake and several platforms, and again two Lizalfos appeared and began to attack him. As on the previous occasion, he used the shield and sword in a good fight and defeated them, causing the two doors that were there to open. Before continuing Link saw a path beyond the room and where there was no more lava; Apparently it was falling down and then he saw that the lava fell into the room where he had fought the other Lizalfos before, he was in the same room but above.

Link continued through the opposite door and came to a room just like the one with the fire beam, only now there was another platform with another beam of fire, so there should be two eyes, but Link only saw one. However, closing one, he jumped to the first platform and to his left saw a hole with the other eye. He closed it too and continued to the next room, which was the one with the various pillars, only it was on the upper floor and in the north part of the room, where the path continued and, on a ledge, there was a large chest. Link opened it and a Sack full of 20 Bombs.

With them in his possession, he continued down the corridor behind the Bombs. At the end of it there was a yellow switch that, when activated, made one of the platforms (the one in the east) of the main room that were next to the one in the center go up to the second floor where Link was. He was on the bridge at the back, above the dragon's head and near there was a stone with an inscription that read: "Head of a dodongo ... When his eyes redden, a new path will open before you."

Link supposed he was referring to the dragon's head, which was more like a dodongo, and to his eyes, but how to make them red? Then he saw that the bridge above his head also had holes and just above the eyes of the head and he had an idea: drop a bomb in those holes, see what would happen. He did so and the eyes of the head reddened and the mouth of the head opened to the platform in the center, revealing a door at the back.

Quickly Link went down the platform and ran to the door. He entered a square room with four spaces, the one Link was in, one accessible on his right, one inaccessible in front, and another with a door and bars on the left. In the center was a hole with a blue switch, so he needed something to be there as he walked through the door (he assumed it was the door, because no other space had anything).

As there was no other option but the right, he continued through there and advanced down a corridor until he came to a room with walls that rose only so that Link could pass by a specific side. There were also some fire Keese, but they were no problem. When he crossed the walls he saw a crack, so he used a bomb to explode it and go through the door behind it.

In that room there was a golden Skulltula and an Armos. He eliminated them both with a bomb, took the golden seal and got out of there. Back in the walls room, Link realized that he had to climb a wall in order to continue because a block blocked the only available path.

Thanks to other blocks that were before, he was able to go up and continue. He went down another corridor and at the end he saw a block. He pushed it to the end and saw that he was in the square room again, but this time where the inaccessible space was (he had moved in a circle). Wasting no more time, he pushed the block into the gap with the blue switch and the barred door swung open.

He came to another square room and heard something gurgling. At the bottom was a chest with more bombs. She took them and then saw a crack in the floor, exploded it and saw that there was another room below. Trying not to hurt himself, he jumped up and came to another square room with a small lake of lava in the center that spanned most of the room. Then she heard a growl behind her.
