Chapter 3 - 3. Light

Dorian entered her dream cautiously, not wanting to be spotted immediately. In her dream the weak looking boy on the couch seemed so much healthier, and so much younger. He was picking flowers for their mother while she simply played in the dirt. The field is beautiful, a rich grassy area with a stunning variation of hues from the wildflowers. The oranges, pinks, purples and blues of the flowers sway in the tall grass, their colors melting like watercolors then returning to how they were. The trees surrounding the area rustle in the wind, and another young girl appeared, her curly dark hair waves in the wind and her brown eyes are glowing with happiness.

Dark blonde hair pops in behind her, standing quietly in the back. At this point he could be no more than 10 years old, but he looked quite familiar. Dorian soon realized it was the brother that hunted for squirrels and rabbits in the woods. He was much smaller at this point, almost to the point of being mousy. "Thomas, join us!" The dark haired girl called out excitedly.

"Why would I join you? Eating bugs has never been my style!" Thomas mocked her, making a gesture of gagging with his hands around his throat.

"Thomas, you fool, I would never!" She squealed in return, throwing a pebble at him before turning to help the one called Levi. "I suppose I will help your brother on my own, since even Maria cannot pull herself from the dirt she is on!" A hand lifted and she brushed the back against her forehead dramatically.

Thomas lit up in that moment, looking quite irritated as he approached his brother and Sophia and began to pick the flowers with them. He turned himself to a human blockade from Sophia and his older brother.

Thinking to himself that he has clearly entered a very good dream, he just watches her for a while. The little girl playing in the dirt looks up and grins, "Brother, Sophia and Thomas can assist you with the flowers now! I on the other hand am assisted by worms for my digging! Would you like to meet my newest friend?" She pulls a worm out and runs at him with it, but in that instant he begins to become pale, his skin slick with sweat, cheeks gaunt and hollow as he collapses. The other children have disappeared, and the sky rolls over with dark clouds.

"Brother? Levi! Oh Levi, do not play at this moment, please come back..." She walks to his unconscious body and cries over it. "Levi, don't leave me please." Her golden hair seemed to match his perfectly, and the shape of their eyes was quite the same, one could tell they were brother and sister much more than the other children, especially as young ones.

Her dream had become a nightmare, and just as quick as it started, the scenery shifted, she was alone in her room with two bed mats, reaching her hand out to an empty one before realizing it was empty. Within seconds her room shifted to its current state, a single mattress, a small shelf, and her- more alone and lonely than she had ever felt. Dorian could feel her sadness, and walking up to her he chose to not be seen, however he left a single red rose on the bedside table.

The girl with the golden hair never looked up, unaware of his presence. Perhaps he should leave her a real rose, but would that not give him away? Dorian thought carefully, deciding to leave it only in her dream this night. He chose to pull himself out of the dream, unsure of how to deal with the immense sadness the girl gave off.

Without another thought he opened the closet door, leaving the sleeping girl alone in her room as he sneaked back out the window, carefully shutting it behind him to keep her safe.
