Chapter 1 - A little bit of bad luck

Sally is a young, ambitious and hardworking girl. Today it's her first day working at the daycare center and she's very nervous about it since it's her first job.

Needles to say her day didn't start off too well.

....

- Oh flat pancakes! I'm going to be late for work! she shouted to the top of her lungs while anxiously looking at the clock and getting dressed at the same time.

- Wait! Don't forget to take this my dear, her mother said while grabbing Sally by the sleeve of her jacket.

- A lunchbox? Mom I don't have time for this, the girl nervously said while looking at the door.

- So you're planning to starve yourself the whole day? I don't buy such nonsense, just take it and then leave, the woman contradicts.

- Argh fine! I'll take it. Just let me go already, I'm late for work, responded Sally as she reached the doorknob with a hand, took the lunchbox with the other one and sprinted out to the bus stop as her entire life would depend on getting on that one vehicle.

She's running as fast as her legs allow her to and when she almost reaches her destination the last passenger is getting on the bus.

-Wait! Wait for me! she loudly spoke from afar to the guy in a red hoodie that was lastly getting on the bus but he didn't do anything, he just smirked at her and told the driver that there's no need to wait.

The bus left without her and all she could do is run all the way to her workplace.

-" That jerk! He could have just told the driver to wait for me too. How can someone be so rude?!?!" she thought while running on the streets of Chicago.

After a 20 minutes long run she gets there barely breathing, with her hair ruffled by the wind and gulping in fear. As soon as she stepped into the building her boss called out her name:

- Miss Sally Rollerswood I've already mentioned that I don't like it when people come in late before hiring you and that's the first thing you do!?!? Shame on you! I thought you were better than that, he harshly yelled at the poor girl.

-Sir please let me explai-

- There's nothing to explain, just go and at least do your job properly, the old man commanded and headed back to his office.

-Yes sir, she quietly obeyed and entered into a large room full of sweet innocent children that needed to be supervised.

She looked around and found herself out of place, she didn't know what she needs to do, since no one explained her beforehand.

Then suddenly an old lady with a warm smile comes to greet her.

-Hello there miss, I'm granny Lily. Is it your first day working here? she calmly asked.

- Hello ma'am, my name is Sally Rollerswood. It actually is my first day in here. Could you perhaps help me out a little bit, she confessed.

-I already knew your name dear, Mr. Fairhaven isn't very subtle with his complaints. I may be old but I can hear that geezer from a mile away, and yes I'd gladly help you out. Just come along with me, the old lady requested.

- Thank goodness, I thought I would mess this up even more, she sighed relieved as she followed her.

-All you need to do is take care of these sweet cinnamon buns. Just make sure they don't get into trouble, as in getting into fights or going out on their own, and most importantly every child needs to be picked up at the end of the day. I'm sure you'll do an amazing job. And if you ever struggle with it just come and tell me. Also did Mr. Fairhaven told you about your payment?

- Oh yes ma'am, he did inform me about it.

-Please, call me granny Lily.

- Alright granny Lily.

-I'm going to bring some snacks for the children, could you watch over them?

-Sure, that's why I'm here, she joyfully answered.

-Be especially careful with that kid over there, the one with the black bunny plushie and messy blonde hair. He's an odd one.

-Understood.

As the old lady went to grab some snacks, the girl was doing what she was told to. She was carefully watching over the energetic, playful individuals and in a split second, one of the children started crying.

She reached to the poor thing that wouldn't stop sobbing and gently asked:

- What's wrong little one? What happened? she said while giving him a soft kiss on the forehead.

- Anthony pushed me down, sobbed the child.

-Who's Anthony? she curiously asked.

Then the child pointed out a little boy with golden hair that was holding tight to a black bunny plushie, hiding behind a wooden table.

-I'm going to talk to him. Please don't be upset, just go and play with your friends, Sally smiled at him and went to the rebellious little Anthony.

-Hey there, my name is Sally. Nice to meet you Anthony, she whispered as she sat down next to him.

-I don't want to talk to you, where's granny Lily? the boy pouted while looking the other way and holding the stuffed animal even tighter.

-Why not? I just want to be friends with you, I didn't come over here to scold you or anything like that, Sally responded.

- You didn't? the young one asked in awe.

-No I won't scold you but, you need to tell me why you pushed that boy alright.

- I didn't push Ryan, he stepped on Mr. Moon and lost his balance, ge reasoned.

- Mr. Moon? You mean the bunny?

-Yes. I barely have enough strength to carry him around, he confessed as he tried to lift the bunny with his small hands on top of his head.

- Oh, I see now. So it was all a misunderstanding, Sally whispered relieved.

-Cinnamon buns come and get some snacks! granny Lily loudly said holding a big plate of cookies in her hands.

-Seems like granny Lily needs some help with those. Let's go and help her out.

What do you say? she smiled.

- Can I? the boy shyly asked.

- Yes, why not. Come along, she giggled, took his small hand and pulled him towards the helpless woman.
