Chapter 49 - Destruction

First I extended my magic into the ground taking control of the entire plains the army was walking upon. A slight vibration started to spread, still unnoticed by the army though some of the accompanying mages around prince Hadrian began to frantically look around.

The very vibration grew into a tremor that was yet faint but noticed by more people this time. Especially the wolves became incredibly disgruntled since their senses were sharper than those of the humans.

The tremors were hard to ignore now like the steps of a giant being. Each tremor rocked the ground sending the infantrymen tumbling and bringing chaos into the army's ranks. The wolves began to struggle against their harnesses as they tried to break away from the army. Only with great effort could the riders keep them in line but not for long.

The mages and high mages around prince Hadrian sent their magic power into the ground in an effort to restrain the tremors that were now coming in increasingly shorter intervals. However, their feeble powers were powerless against me.

'Elemental summoning, King of all fire giants, Surt!'

Before the army's terrified gazes a giant made of liquid magma manifested. Hardened magma covered the giant forming a suit of armor that would always be restored by his body. In his hand, he held an obsidian greatsword that was stabbed into the ground causing a small fountain of lava to gush outaround it.

'Elemental passage, gate of the fire realm open thyself and release the spawns of fire.'

Behind Surt an obsidian gate emerged and from it, creatures of all shapes came flooding out. Their bodies were made of fire, magma ember, or pure energy, and the ground upon which they tread was scorched black.

"Steady your ranks and prepare for combat! Mages, take out the giant one!"

Hadrian's orders boomed across the battlefield and achieved some effect. The infantrymen closest to the flood of blazing terrors huddled together and readied their weapons. The following clash was accompanied by the sounds of screams and things being burnt. A distinct smell of burnt skin began to waft across the battlefield.

The frenzied horde couldn't be stopped with magic or large amounts of water. The creatures of flame were hardly bothered when iron weapons cut into them and the partially wooden shields could do little to hold up against flame-clad strikes.

Each creature roared in an unnatural frenzy and fought with every part of their bodies. As they moved blazing particles were thrown into the air and set flame to everything they touched. The frontline was alight with embers spreading quickly and in all directions.

The mages around Hadrian finished their overly long chants and hurled a giant mass of water at Surt. I couldn't help but reprimand them in my mind. If they had dropped that mass of water onto the creatures of fire they might have bought enough time to make a safe retreat.

I suspected that they believed Surt to be the creator of the gate to the fore realm. Therefore vanishing him would close the gate and guarantee their victory.

Too bad, it wouldn't work. If Surt was damaged enough to lose his physical form in this world I would simply resummon him. And that was if he sustained that amount of damage. Surt wasn't just some creature made of magma after all. He was a mythological giant that lorded over his own fiery realm and brought great fear to his enemies.

As the mass of water was approaching Surt pulled his greatsword out of the ground and slashed down at a speed that was unbelievable for someone of his size. Both his arms and the sword produced a screeching sound as they tore through the air resistance like paper.

The mass of water was cleanly parted in the middle and its trajectory was split in two directions. Only about half of the water hit Surt and with an ear-piercing hiss, the water began to evaporate before creating a steam explosion that obscured the fiery giant's body for a moment.

At first, the mages cheered thinking they had succeeded and some even began to bootlick prince Hadrian praising his quick thinking. However, when a giant obsidian sword cleaved the air and dispersed the steam they all fell silent. For there stood Surt, majestic and unharmed his eyes two red suns gazing down at them.

I allowed Surt to advance having ordered him to hold his position until now. He took his first step and the resulting tremor made the Galli realize that they hadn't even noticed the absence of the tremors from before.

Every step Surt took shook the earth beneath him. Each step covered dozens of meters and before the Galli army knew what was happening he had already reached the and brought down his swords.

The blade crashed into the closed ranks that now looked like ants in comparison to the sword. Just from the impact, both humans and fire creatures were blown into the air indiscriminately. Those that had been directly below it were completely pulverized.

Where the blade had cleaved the earth apart lava gushed out like a volcano erupting. The humans stumbled back as the frontline had been separated by a gulf of lava.

Then, the sword was pulled out of the ground by Surt and readied for another devastating swing. At that moment a few weak water jets were shot at Surt provoking another steam explosion and causing the giant to postpone his next swing to once again clear the steam by swinging through the air.

The jets then switched targets and wiped out the fire creatures raging in the frontlines. The infantrymen seized this brief moment of respite and broke into a run away from Surt and the gate where more creatures still came flooding out.

Hadrian also turned his black stallion and retreated together with his army. As if I would let them leave so easily. I would make sure that they knew that Saitala was off-limits.

Ominous black most erupted from around me and engulfed the entire army before anyone could react. The infantrymen quickly lost sight of each other and started bumping into invisible things. Then monsters appeared from within the black mist, the most horrifying demons and monsters emerged and chased the infantrymen.

I laughed watching the terrified humans run away without being followed by anything. This would be a sight to see if they passed anyone. An army running and bumping into each other screaming in anguish.

Having driven away the army I released Surt's summoning and closed the gate to the fire realm. The fire creatures were still on the plain below and flames were spreading in every direction.

'Extinguish!'

I released an enormous amount of magic and all the flames were quelled and the fire creatures were vanquished.

'Nature's miracle.'

I cast another spell and quickly the scorched ground recovered, first came grass, and then some trees grew.
