Chereads / If I Let Go / Chapter 5 - What a coincidence

Chapter 5 - What a coincidence

The trees rustles swaying from side to side as the cool breeze passes through. Birds fly overhead in circles. As the sunrises and the sunlight filtering through the trees. Then at the corner, a half-moon appeared in the cloudless bluish sky. It's really amazing seeing the two so close yet so far.

As I jogged along the road, my mind drifted to the music. It's the second time I've pass my grandparent's house.

Time to speed up. I trotted in the second lap. My heart pounded to the beat of my feet. Sweat trickled down my temple. Hotness surrounded me. Whenever I run; peacefulness warmed me in and out. At a corner of my eyes, an old lady with a green host in her hand waters her gorgeous garden, she noticed me and gave me a warm welcoming smile. I smiled back. I gotta say, they have a friendly neighborhood here. One last curb then granny's house will appear.

I felt unease, something wasn't right. I slowed my phase down, and scan around. Nothing seems suspicious at all. I took my earphones off.

That's when I heard something pounding on the concrete floor right behind me. It wasn't like those metallic or mechanical sort of pounding. But the moment I peeked over my shoulder, a black, bloodthirsty pit bull with a brown collar appeared out of nowhere. The pit bull rushes toward me with its white sharp teeth, scaring the shit out of my life. I immediately looked in front of me and willed my legs to scamper. My heart accelerated as my feet pounded on the concrete floor. Granny's house is still at the far end of the curb. I can't outrun a freaking dog. Don't tell me I'm going to die like this. Well probably I won't die, but I'd probably be in the news headline. An 18 year old girl became dog food. That headline totally suck, but for sure it'll catch attention. Or I'd go home with a huge bite mark and long awful scratches in my legs, which isn't sexy since I already have a scar at the side of my belly. And the dark crimson blood gushing out sluggishly dripping on the concrete floor. And not to mention about the rabbis multiplying in my veins if it ever happens, pondering about it causes my entire body to shiver. Why in the hell am I thinking about scars and blood in a time like this? God, Felicity Olivia, you need a goddamn mental checkup.

Shaking my head, forgetting the thought. My lungs burns as the oxygen from my lungs depletes. My breath comes out in a gasps while I dash for my dear life. I could hear the dog relentless growling.

Shit! I can't die like this. I curse when I passed Granny's house. I hit myself. Stupid! I can't turn back now.

Soon, dizziness crept into me. Cool sweat run down my cheeks and temple. If I slow down right this millisecond. I'd be dog food.

I scan the place, hoping I'd pass by the old woman a minute ago, who would probably help me stop this insane dog by her water host. But to my disappointment, she was gone. Damn! I peeked over my shoulder again when the dog was gaining on me.

I'm going to die, I'm going to die. I repeated the same mantra in my head.

Granny's house is still out of reach and I need to stop, if I don't, I would black out and collapsed. Tears were forming in the corner of my eyes. I can't die like this. Not today. I can't have another huge scar in my leg.

My head began to throb, the wooziness was becoming unbearable. I closed my eyes and feel my heart pounding furiously as my whole body tense at what might happened, the world slowly closing in on me. I opened my eyes. Everything around me was becoming smudgy.

A surge of adrenalin flood through me, And just my luck, a guy drops a black garbage bag in the waste-bin. My heart skipped a beat when I knew who it was.

Caleb.

Without hesitation, I sprint toward him with every strength left in me. He rubbed his hand with his palms. He turns around and his eyes narrows and widens when he noticed me running for my life. A few inches from him I immediately jumped onto him and wrap my arms around his neck. He catches me and carried me like a bride. I closed my eyes shut as I gasp for air. The pounding of my heart still echoes in my ears and my body pulsates in exhaustion. I could still hear the dog's paws pounded on the concrete floor, coming closer.

Caleb whistled. I opened my eyes and looked at the bloodthirsty pit bull who I envisioned a monster going to rip me to dust. To my astonishment, he sat peacefully on the concrete floor with his tongue sticking out and happily wiggling his tail.

I stared at the dog in bewilderment. I almost died from suffocation and heart attack.

"Livie? Are you alright?" He asked.

Glancing at him. He gazes at me and his lips curled into a grin. He was still carrying me. Oh shit. In a haste I unwrapped my arms from his neck, but to my disbelief, he didn't put me down yet.

"You can put me down now." I said breathless.

"I think Dracula sucked you're blood. You need to take a rest, you're white like a pearl." He says shaking his head.

"Toffee, go home now." He commanded and to my disbelief. The fierce looking dog (so called Toffee) barked and dash toward the direction where he chased me a few minutes ago.

Caleb carried me inside his house and I could still feel my heart pounding. So he lives here. He then gently places me down on the L-shape mocha couch. He went somewhere probably to the kitchen. While he was gone, I scan their living room. It was simple, but elegant and comforting. The walls were painted white, and a huge television on the left with speakers on the side. And also a mahogany center table. To my disbelief, my favorite flower of an artificial lilac sits on top. It's my favorite flower in the whole world. It's simple yet elegant with small purple petals. There was also a portrait of a beautiful lilac flowers. I wonder, his mom probably love's lilac too.

Caleb appeared with a glass of water with ice cubes. He handed it to me and I took it. The cool water ran down my tongue 'till the pit of my stomach. The fact that I drank as if I hadn't drank water in years. I placed the glass on the center table and wiped my lips with the back of my hand. That was completely refreshing and I could feel my body slowly gaining strength.

"If you're wondering, it's our neighbor's dog. He'd jumped from the fence, and Toffee loves chasing joggers and bikers. That's why no one jogs around here, they jog near the park." He amusingly explained.

"I thought it was your dog. Or else I had a reason to kick you in the ass." I said grinning. "But thank you... for well, you know saving me." I sincerely thanked him, without looking directly in his eyes. Feeling shy all of a sudden.

He chuckled. "It was nothing really." He smiled at me warmly.

I took a glimpse of my watch it was already eight in the morning.

"Thanks again, but I need to go." I say and hastily stood up.

"Wait! Have breakfast with me." He say more of a command, not a mere question.

"Can't gotta ahhhmm... Water the plants."

He raised a brow, "Plants?"

"Yeah, I always water the plants at this kind of hour, so I better go. Thank you again."

"Okay...but have you seen..." He scratches the back of his neck. "The note?"

I raised a brow at him, although I know what he's pertaining to.

"Uhmmm...well you know the sticky note I..."

"Ohhh that? I did saw it. But I'll check on it later." I smiled at him even though I lied.

He nodded and accompanied me out "look into it alright! Don't forget." He said.

"I won't don't worry." I slightly chuckled, and waved. He waved back with a half-smile.

"Take care, if any dog chases you, Call me and I'd be there in a flash!" He yelled when I was a little too far and I shook my head. He's silly.

"I will!" I shouted back.

I parked the car in the schools parking lot. I killed the engine of my mom's sleek black BMW. She loves this car and I hope someday, I wont wreck it.

First day of school always gives me this tingling feeling in my chest. I breathe in and out. Act cool Felicity Olivia. I unbuckle my seatbelt and grabbed my sling bag on the passengers' seat.

The moment I stepped foot on the school ground. A cool wind blew my hair to the side. I examined the building in front of me. Why does it feel like it's my first time seeing this? Even though I know, I've been here before, or the fact that a lot can changed in the span of ten years. Perhaps the color changed? Or a massive renovation happened. Averting the thought. I sauntered toward the main entrance.

Where in the hell is my designated room? I stared at the bulletin board, hoping the board would magically tell me the direction because this school is too huge—and I can't waste my time mapping this place out. *Face palm* I forgot, I have a mouth and a voice to ask for directions. Is it possible I'm losing my common-sense?

Glancing to my side and there was a girl standing next to me, I should probably ask her. I stepped closer and tapped her shoulder.

"Hey," I gave her my best smile, hoping to make a new friend.

"What?" She annoyingly replied, then she rolled her eyes at me.

The smile on my face dissolves. "Nothing." I said and stepped back. What a bitch. If I could just slap her face, I would. I sigh. Is there anyone friendly in here? I glance around and everyone seems so busy getting ready for class.

Abruptly, I riveted back to the girl I've talked to a few minutes ago. My eyes widens. Is it just me or this is too PDA much? She was torridly kissing his boyfriend in front of everyone. I glanced around and everyone seems fine about it. It was as if they were used to seeing this kind of scenario. When they were done eating each other's faces, the girl intertwine their fingers together, and they both walked out as if they're the king and queen of the school. Although the guy seems a bit familiar, his back and the way he walks. My instincts tells me I have seen him before. Have I? Well probably not.

Startled. "He's the team captain of the lacrosse team while his girlfriend is the cheerleader in the cheerleading squad... I presume you're new around here?" I turned my head to the person who has spoken to me. It was a girl, two inches taller than me, she's tan with black silky long hair. Chocolate brown eyes with long lashes. She has an hour-glass shape, she's undeniably cute.

Then I knew we'd be good friends. We both exchange names and her name is Ashley Fay. "You can call me Ash." She added.

"You can call me Livie." I smiled. Finally, I said to myself.

"So, what class are you in?" She asked. I handed her my registration form, she examined it and suddenly her eyes widens. "Uhmm... Is there something wrong with my registration form?" I asked feeling worried. She glance up at me and her smile broadens. I raised my perfectly plucked eyebrow at her.

"We're in the same class!" She shrieks. "Not just in one class, but in all." She hugged me as if she found a new friend, likewise I did as well. "C'mon, we're going to be late." She gently pulled me, well I guess the bulletin board is magical after all, I'm being drag to my home room.

The first and second subject was bearable and totally tedious. But good thing Ashley was there to keep me company, or else I might have fallen asleep in the first day. I find her quite amusing and talkative, but all in all she's fun to be with.

Now, I'm fully awake because our next subject is physical education, although Ashley told me we'd only discuss in the first day. We both headed to the gym and sat on the bleachers. There were only a few students in here. I glanced on my watch, two minutes left before the class starts.

Soon students were piling up. Class was soon to start. But something wasn't right. We were approximately sixty students in here, and I know our maximum student per section is around forty. I glanced at Ashley and by the look on her face, we're probably thinking the same thing.

"Are two classes combining? I asked her.

"I guess so, but they're seniors." She said wide eyed.

Soon after our gym teacher arrived.

"Sorry, guys I'm," he checked his watch. "Five minutes late." He announced. "Anyway, first of all, If you're all wondering why I combine these two section and year, because, your topic for this term is quite similar, so why not combine it? Which the school president approved. Anyway the topic for this term is dance."

When he said that word dance. Everyone mumbled. However my stomach flipped.

Dancing is seriously not my thing. Whenever I dance, bad shit happens. Like me stepping on one's foot, me making a fool of myself. To be honest, I'm a walking disaster, I don't know why I'm still alive. I've made so many huge mistakes. Some of it is even a life and death situations. Like me falling off a bike near a rusting old trashcan that had these pointed rusting metals spiking out from it. I almost hit that when my father hastily ran toward me, and stopped the bike with his mighty hands. Basically he never let me rode a bike ever again. He said I might get hit with a car. Although I thought he was being ridiculous. Then I remembered my scar on my upper thigh, which I completely forgot how I got it from. Also there was another incident, when we went off for a swim in the beach. I said I'd swim at the side only when I saw a yacht, and out of curiosity I swam to it, I took a huge step when abruptly it was a deep, uneven sand flooring and I panicked. I didn't know how to swim and until now I still don't. I couldn't reach the sandy floor and I screamed. Yet again, my dad swam toward me. Saving my ass as always.

"Olivia? Did you just heard what our gym teacher just said?" Ashley said bring me back to reality. I noticed all the girls were getting something from the fish bowl. I glance up at her, confused.

"Umm... nope."

She heavily sigh. "Just go up there and get that piece of paper. Alright?" I nodded.

When I got the paper, I sat beside Ashley and unfold the paper, revealing the word. Caleb. I heard Ashley gasp while my eyes tries to understand the logic forming in my brain. This can't be him, besides there's tons of name Caleb in this world. It's totally impossible.

Abruptly the gym door flew open and just when I thought my mind already made a decision that it's not him. But apparently it was really him. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of him. This can't be. It can't be. I'm damn hallucinating again.

The impossible is possible.
