Chapter 141 - CHAPTER 140: fulfilling the deal.

Days passed by like that. During the day I would practice magic and question Leonor about magic, alchemy and what according to these people gods were. And during the night I would Kill as many wendigos as possible.

When I first questioned Leonor about the gods however, she was convinced that they had left this world. For when the people needed them most. their prayers went unanswered, and the few angels that tried to help them died. Only for cultist to use the remaining bodies to open gates to hell.

I could understand that. They were in desperate need due to the famine and the monsters that followed. If holy forces would no longer stand by their side, then they had to look for help somewhere else.

When I asked her why she thought that the gods had left them she said that all answers amounted to nothing. There was no reason, no higher purpose for them to leave, or at least not a reason that could be fathomed by the human mind. they just left.

But no matter how I tough about it. it just didn't make sense. Why would the gods leave something that they themselves had created? If they truly did no longer care, why not just get rid of that world?

Unless there was something else preventing them from properly interacting with the worlds.

I decided that I would ask that… thing in the void, what it knew about the situation. As I was fairly sure that I would come across it again.

Furthermore, I was growing quite frustrated about the fact that it was truly hard for me to learn how to use water magic. Tough I could interact with it at least. I could barely do anything with it.

What made it even worse was that I had killed so much and devoured so many souls that my body was slightly changing again. now there were white spikes running down my spine, much like that of the first demon that I had encountered.

The way they split apart skin and scales as they grew was incredibly uncomfortable and sometimes even painful. But as there was not much that I could do about it, I had no choice but to deal with it until it was over.

I looked up when I heard the rattling of carriages coming close to the camp. I was currently in the lake, trying to wash away some of the wendigo blood that had gone in between my scales. I believed that literally smelling like hell was bad enough and I did not need the stench of the rotting wendigo blood to add to it.

I decided that whoever was coming could wait. They probably weren't even here for me in the first place.

When I properly washed the filthy blood away, I got out of the lake and made my way back to the camp. There I saw that there indeed were three carriages, all filled with men and women armed to the teeth. I could immediately tell that these were the reinforcements these people had been waiting for.

A quite large man with grey hair came out first. He was the only one that was not wearing armour.

The man looked around the camp and spat on the ground. "Good job staying alive. Tough you idiots don't even have a barrier. Leonor, are you perhaps inviting the monsters to dinner?"

Leonor walked out of the crowd that had formed around the carriages. "dear cousin of mine. You should know that these wendigos would climb over it like they're just walking through the forest. A barrier would only hinder our view and movements."

"I still think that it would keep those kids from wan… what the hell is that?"

The man stared at me while I walked into the camp. The people were still frightened an uncomfortable in my presence. I could even hear some people in the crowd praying to whatever gods they believed in.

I did not think much of it. maybe when I had just become a demon it would have bothered me. but right now, these small prayers were more like annoying flies that land on your skin on a hot day.

I came closer to the man. I had no need to inspect him better because I already perfectly knew what he looked like when he came into my line of sight. I just came closer because I thought that it was funny to see how scared he actually was of me.

"I find it quite amusing that you already mentioned where I came from while asking what I am. And as you should probably understand by now, I am a demon."

His face was pale why he desperately tried to make some sloppy hand signals that were meant to order the people on the carriages to back him up. But they could barely move. Let alone coming out of the carriages to protect their leader.

The urge to kill all of them flashed trough my mind as I looked at their trembling figures. Maybe I had been too nice for too long. Maybe I should just get it out of my system. I eventually decided to wait a little longer before actually committing mass murder.

I smiled and turned to Leonor. "I believe that I have now fulfilled my end of the deal. How about I stay here for one more day so that your reinforcements can properly settle. Then I will leave after that."
