Some time passed and the dwarf had finally left me alone.
I wanted to fly out of the tower to get down and apologise for my reaction. However, I soon made up my mind and crawled further back into the darkness.
There I stretched out my mind to contact the dwarf. I remembered that the last time I had a really hard time doing so, even when he let me in on his own.
Now I was able to break his mental barrier, tough with some difficulty, rather swiftly.
He of course noticed my actions immediately.
( Could you not do that! If you have to say something just come down. )
he was not happy with the fact that I entered his mind without permission. And I completely understood that.
("There are people here.")
I could feel the annoyance of the dwarf as he heard my voice in his mind.
( so, wat? It is not the first time that people come close to the ruins. Just sit it out and leave my mind already.)
("They are children. And I don't sense any parents nearby.")
( they must have wandered off. They will find their way back in no time.)
("I know that you are somewhere inside the ruins so you can't hear it. But one of these children is crying like a maniac and the other is just standing there. I think I smell blood. These children are wounded.")
I looked dover the edge of one of the broken walls to see if they were in my line of sight.
And indeed, there they were. A young boy and girl.
The girl was crying and maybe then years old, while the boy was about half her age and seemed completely emotionless. However, both of them were covered in scrapes and cuts.
Even from all the way over here I could feel a strange sensation coming from the boy. Like something was not natural and that I had to stay away from it at all cost.
( fine I will go check on them. and when I am done you have to get out of my head and get down here. )
I remained silent and watched as the dwarf made his way out of the ruins towards the children.
The crying child was scared when seeing another person. So, the dwarf tried to calm her down first.
She shot a swift glance behind her. This caused some of the hazel brown hair to fall in front of her eyes, but she quickly whipped it to the side.
Seemingly set at ease that whatever she looked behind for was not there she turned to the dwarf again.
He handed her a clean piece of cloth to dry her tears with and escorted them to somewhere in the ruins so he could take a look at their wounds.
For some reason were some buildings completely soundproof while others seemed to enhance every noise that was made. And of course, they had to go to an area, where I could not hear a thing.
Right now, I thought that it was quite annoying since they were also out of my view, I had no idea what was going on.
("Do you think that I can come down yet?") I asked after a few minutes had passed without anything happening.
( no, I don't think so. According to the girl, Julia. They were falsely accused of trying to summon a demon. They were attacked by the guards and could barely escape to these ruins. Even if the chance is small that they will see you, it is not worth the risk. )
("Fine. Just tell me when something interesting happens.")
Right now, there was indeed not much that I could do besides waiting. Inevitably I still got bored and decided to question the dwarf.
("So, what is the plan? If people are going to look for them here both them and me would be in trouble.")
After asking the question, I realised that something was odd. Normally I could always tell if one had heard me or not when I spoke to them like this. However, I did not get that response now.
("Did you hear me?")
It took him a little while, but the dwarf eventually responded. ( Sorry, what did you ask? )
("Never mind that. How could you not hear me when I'm talking directly in your mind?")
( I… don't know. )
I was now really considering coming down. Something was just wrong, and I wanted to know what.
( Kid, come here. that little boy is scaring the hell out of me and at this point I am not even sure if he is human. )
("What is it.")
There was a moment of silence before the dwarf spoke again.
( He asked for you. He knew exactly where you were and could describe everything about you. From the colour of your eyes to the number of scales on your back. )
I was a bit stunned by this. It just seemed too specific.
("It is a child. He could just be talking nonsense that coincidentally was the truth.")
At this point I only said that to try to set aside the anxiety that I felt about this strange kid. But the response of the dwarf made it all so much worse.
( No. that is not it. He just called me by the name that I had left behind so many years ago. )
