Chapter 40 - CHAPTER 40: a single word

I jumped from the roof and flew a lite bit before I landed in the mass of monsters.

They immediately started screeching in confusion. A wolf who had lost nearly all of its hair and lifeless pale eyes was the first to attack. It slashed at me with its jagged claws.

But with a simple movement of my arm the claws of the beast only hit my scales. This however did nothing but make it more anger. In its ravenous hatred it tried to bite me. The quick movement came with such a surprise that this time I couldn't move away fast enough and my scales didn't cover my whole arm, so its fangs pierced deep in my skin causing my blood to flow out and tainting the jaw of the beast deep red.

Now that its jaws were locked on to my arm it couldn't doge my strike with my claws. In one smooth movement I managed to scratch the skull of the beast open. After this the grip it had on my arm drastically loosened and it soon slipped of and fell down.

A lamia had noticed my fight with the wold and thought that I was distracted enough to be attacked. But before the snake like creature could wrap its body around me to crush me with its force, I had already thrown a goblin at it that was standing nearby.

It fell down due to the impact of the thrown goblin. Before the lamia could crawl up I had already crossed the distance between us. Ripping the chest open of both the lamia and the goblin.

I could hear arrows hitting the creatures who tried to sneak up behind me. With a single glance at the two metallic blue arrows that were poking out of their eyes I could tell that these had been fired by the elf.

Some of the humans on the roofs were shooting again. but this time with more cation not to hit me or one of their loved ones who they still hoped could be saved.

This battle continued for a seemingly endless amount of time. Every time a creature came to close, I would rip it apart, until the grass was red and all that was visible was a sea of corpses.

But they still kept coming. Some of them slipped past me so we had to do everything we could so they wouldn't follow the ones who tried to run away. This required some of the humans to focus on the creatures who were rampaging in the village. What inevitably weakened the defence further causing more monsters to slip past me.

Also, the presence of the humans whose souls were affected was greatly demotivating.

But at this moment I didn't really care about such things. I sprung from victim to victim with a wide grin on my face. My teeth had long since been tainted red due to the blood of the creatures who had managed to come so close to me that I had to rip them open with my teeth. If not for my skin that was already red to begin with one could see that I was completely covered in the vermilion life fluid.

With a deep imitating laughter, I ripped out the spine of a Mahaha. It still tried to reach me with its clawed blue hand, but its white eyes lost their shine before that and the naked creature stopped moving entirely.

After that a monster that couldn't immediately identify attacked my back. Its claws were the first to break through the scales. But its great achievement didn't matter as I threw it off with a quick turn. All the attack managed to accomplice was that it left three long wounds behind.

Then I smashed the skull of the creature. The bones shattered when coming in contact with my fist leaving only a deep red pulp behind.

I gave a slight chuckle. ("Wat a shame that such an impressive creature ended up going down so easily.")

Soon I was distracted by the screams of the humans who were fighting on the roofs. It was only a matter of time before the creatures who had climbed over the walls would climb on the roofs. But a weird loud sound drew my attention.

When I looked over at the humans, I saw an unusual sight.

The old lady who I had tried to convince to leave the battlefield was standing on one of the roofs was screaming while slamming to pans together making an incredibly loud noise that was hard to ignore.

While some of the monsters ignored her, the most of them got a little distracted or even moved towards her. This gave some of the humans the chance to escape the monster they were fighting, and in the most convenient cases, deal a finishing blow.

This however didn't last long. A drake like creature had already reached the roof she was standing on and ripped the woman apart.

I however didn't want the sacrifice of the woman to be in vain. So, I kicked off the ground and flew to the roofs to help the humans.

Some of the bigger monsters who were an easier target had destroyed almost half of the buildings before it died from blood loss. It had also destroyed a part of the wall, sifting the main focus of the battle to the village.

Many lives were lost on both sides. It didn't matter how scared of determined the humans entered the battlefield a big part of the group was dead or severely wounded.

But the battle didn't last forever. now that the strongest monsters where already dealt with, the remaining humans could kill the remaining ones with relative ease. After some time, the only ones remaining where the corrupted humans.

They had a much harder time climbing over the wall let alone climbing the roofs when we pulled the ladders up. That's why there were about twenty of them left.

But when I tried to come up with a solution that would satisfy the remaining humans, I sensed something.

I stopped looking down at the corrupted humans and shifted my gaze to the edge of the forest to confirm what I was sensing.

I spoke a single word to the humans who were still able to move. "Run."

Coming out of the forest was the demon who had been commanding these monsters.
