Dinah felt warmth spread through her body after she spoke with the the great sphinx. She was finally worthy to be here. However, shortly after she felt a chill fall down her back and she quickly turned around. She looked at the shadows a short distance away. She could have sworn she saw a flicker of something, but she shook her head. No, there was nothing over there. Her eyesight was phenomenal in the night, there is no way something could hide from her. It was nothing and quickly she forgot about it.
Dinah walked in between the two paws her left hand continually touching the cool stone. When she stopped in between the two paws as the chest of the great sphinx she stopped. Dinah touched in-between and a secret door opened up.
She was here and their entire history lay before her. She had heard vague stories about this place from her mother. Finally her right of passage. She looked again behind her yellow eyes scanning the dark expanse that spread before her. Quickly Dinah slipped through the open door and it closed quickly behind her. This the the secret of the sphinx of her people, it was not available to outsiders.
Dinah's yellow feline eyes scanned the room, light was not necessary for her to see perfectly within. On the walls in the room, of the great sphinx, were shelves upon shelves of manuscripts. Their entire history contained in this great and wonderful room. But there were more than manuscripts, their were items of great significance to their kind. As her eyes scanned the room, it appeared as if it had been hundreds of years since it was last visited.
When a young sphinx came of age, they would tell their their riddle to the great sphinx. The riddle they told the sphinx defined them in their culture. It was their right of passage to come to this place. It was their right of passage to learn everything that their elders had studied. Of course, their first visit to the great library was when they came of age, but sphinxes would visit periodically providing more information to their already impressive stores.
Dinah slowly and systematically went through the library with the intention of committing the history to her memory. She didn't want to miss anything and carefully took the manuscripts to the center of the room where a table and a single chair was placed. The sheer amount of history and knowledge contained within this room was nearly orgasmic to the young sphinx, she didn't need to consume food; the consumption of knowledge was enough. Dinah had finished reading the scrolls, manuscripts, and books she exited the library store deep within the sphinx when the moon was high in the sky, she stepped out of the great library. Of course she surveyed the area to ensure that the library would continue to be hidden from the world. The door began to slowly close and she began her journey back to the town.
Unfortunately the poor young sphinx didn't make it five steps out of the the great sphinx before she was brutally shoved back in, before the door could fully close. She cried out, but nobody was there to hear her, there would be no one to help her. She only noticed a shadow before she blacked out.
Dinah awoke later, how much time had passed she didn't know, but she was sure it had at least been a couple hours. She attempted to move her head slightly and it began to throb painfully. She wanted to call out, but she stopped herself. In the corner of the library she noticed a shadow and what happened came rushing back to her.
She could feel the dried blood on her face. She wore a grimace on her face as the shadow approached her. The creature spoke, but it sounded like whispers in the wind. "You're awake. I didn't want you to miss all the fun."
The sound floated past Dinah, she tried to fully comprehend what it was saying. However, her head throbbed and her mind was fuzzy. She groaned instead. The shadow really didn't have a face, it was strange, really odd. Her heart began to pump quickly further giving her the feeling of being dizzy and light headedness.
It was then that she realized she couldn't move, her entire body was paralyzed. She moved her eyes and followed the shadow. It knelt by her side, moving a piece of her hair behind her ear before standing back up and moved to a pile of something in the middle of the room.
What was it doing? Better yet, what is it? Dinah thought to herself. After having read the entire library, she knew none of the sphinxes before her had knowledge of the creature that was before her. And Dinah herself certainly hadn't encountered it before.
The creature whispered something. A flame ignited in the room. It was then she realized that their history books, her history was being set aflame.
Her eyes moved quickly between the shadow and the history books. It was then with the full light from the fire she got a better look at the creature. But, it wasn't really a creature but rather a shadow of some kind. The light should have illuminated what the creature was however, it became more of enigma.
As the fire consumed the books, there was no smoke and it did not spread to the tables and chairs nearby. Dinah called out in pain as she herself was being set aflame.
