"Our story doesn't finish there. I wish it did." Lena looked glumly at the water. "Well, part of me does, wished that it ended there..."
"Anyways," Myrtle picked up as Lena had trailed off. "We spent a couple years just being mermaids and trying to remain hidden in a world that was developing technology. There was a town in Northern Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior we enjoyed visiting. They knew what we really were and they kept our secret."
"Yeah, our secret wiped them out." Lena interjected.
"Are you going to tell them or shall I?" Myrtle retorted angry with another interruption.
"No, no, no. Go on." This part was hard to Lena. It still hurt her.
"Okay. Well, we protected them for several years, about a decade or so. And just as we protected them they protected us and our secret. Lena and I didn't know that we had been discovered, we weren't aware of the great battle that been happening between mythological creatures. We simply lived our lives. The creature came in his suit and tie looking for us, he looked human. He went to the town as he had heard rumors about two mythological creatures that resided nearby. When the creature asked about us, the town refused to give away our secret. Even after they had been threatened!"
Myrtle paused. "The town cared for us greatly. We saved many of their male residents from a sinking ship. That is the reason that even after they were threatened, they would not reveal our location and would not give us up. Lena and I noticed the lack of people on the docks, something unheard of for this town. We transformed and walked into town. The town was eerily quiet. We knew something was very wrong."
Myrtle took a deep breath. "We heard a noise from behind us and we turned around. We saw the hideous creature with surreal limbs. He held a teenage girl in his hands. She was alive, but barely. Her eyes flickered open and with all the energy she could muster she yelled, 'run'."
"As quickly as the sound came out, he broke her neck and threw her limp body to the ground in a crumpled mess. The creature charged at us. He was so fast. I told Lena to head to the water."
"That is after all, where we are strongest. However, he was moving so quickly and on land we are not fast. I spun around, letting my jagged teeth out and my nails grew. I charged at him. I needed to give Lena time to get to the water. There she could help me fight. Unfortunately, I was not that strong. I was no match for him. For about a minute or so, I could fight back. I scratched and bit him and he bled, but it didn't appear to bother him. With movements were as fast as lightning and he grabbed me by the throat and lifted me up. I struggled to free myself. But, his grip was strong."
Myrtle stopped and looked over at Lena. "I'll continue." Lena stated.
"After I had made my way to the water, I transformed. With all the power I could summon I whipped the beast with water. But, I do not believe I did any damage. I believe the surprise and the force of the water caught him off guard. But he dropped Myrtle. I kept throwing little water cannons at him giving Myrtle time to join me in the water. In the water we had the advantage of being faster. He tried to follow after us, but he was a land creature. Myrtle and I dove deep and we took the water way south and far away as possible for him."
Lena continued to speak. "We headed under the Mackinac Bridge, through Lake Michigan and ended up in Chicago. That is where we ran into Hattie. Apparently she had been looking for us as well. 'Hello my dears.' she said, 'I've been looking for you for some time. You both were difficult to find! I suppose that is a good thing no doubt.'"
Myrtle took up the mantle and began speaking. "We didn't trust her at first. But, she was kind and understanding. Not too much longer she told us about the coven. But by the time we had been found by the coven it was not in its' glory. The coven was dispersed all over the world for preservation and safety. The 'golden ticket' had vanished without a trace. But she took us into the fold and helped us. Hattie gave us a purpose, but what is more she gave us a family." Myrtle concluded.
Lena smiled and lay her head on Myrtle's shoulder and closed her eyes with a content smile on her face. Myrtle patted Lena's head and looked at Erin. "Thats our story. Well, our story before we joined the coven."
"Wait, how come you were separated? Why didn't you guys come here together?" Erin asked her brow creased in thought.
Myrtle smiled, "Thats easy! It was really only for the past couple of years. We were checking the different oceans, checking to see if there were any more like us that had been hiding. That was until we got the call to return."
Lena lazily nodded her head in agreement.
Erin nodded that she understood and then her eyes grew large, "What was it that attacked you, did you ever find out?"
Myrtle had a sad look on her face and turned to look at the girl laying on her shoulder, "Lena knew what it was. Her knowledge informed the coven.
Blue eyes opened and looked at Erin. Her face was grim as she recalled the monster that had viciously attacked the town and them.
