"Your in big trouble!" The two staff yelled.
I winced to the sound of their angry voices.
Brian stood up, "Hey! Easy on the girl,"
"Step back, 6580!" One of the male staff shouted.
I stood frozen, not knowing what to do. I knew damn good and well that when I get in trouble, Dr. Frentz comes straight to me. When he does, it feels scary, because it feels like he's going to throw me into a meat shredder. There's only a few times that I have even gotten in trouble with Dr. Frentz, and what happened wasn't a very nice thing. It was horrible.. and it was the only thing I was terrified of.
I should of had gotten back here faster.
It was as if my own spine had froze in solid ice, just by hearing the familiar steps of the Head Scientist-Doctor.
Numbers of Guards rushed pass me, and all I could do was watch my own group be slam down onto the color solid floor, as if they were the ones who did wrong.
My lungs stopped moving, working. There was nothing I could do to help me group. Skyler had cancer, they shouldn't be doing this. They shouldn't be giving him this kind of treatment.
Why on earth was I THE Special Test Subject? THE ONLY Special Test Subject. WHY?!
"Your hurting me!" Skyler cried out desperately, struggling to get loose from the two Guards who pinned him to the metal ground.
I watched the boys struggle underneath the Guard's hands and arms. I asked myself again. "Why wasn't I the only getting in trouble?" By asking myself this, I thought of it. I had no words to say.
Then, I suddenly felt the cold hand of terror grab onto my shoulders.
I nearly panicked. My heart started racing. It was Dr. Frentz. There was no getting out of this.
"Come with me." The Head Scientist-Doctor ordered coldly. And without letting me move on my own, he pulled me back and forced me to walk down the hallway.
"Can't believe I had to stop my work upstairs, and have to come down here..." Dr. Frentz complained. He sounded angry. Very angry.
As I stepped forward, I gulped down my fear. I clinched my fists into tight balls. I was getting ready to screech something to him.
"Tell me. Where you were. Right now." He demanded, staring down at the back of my head. As if he was dying to burn a hole through the back of my head. He gritted his teeth when I wouldn't turn around to face him.
It took me awhile to for, what the words I was going to pour out of my mouth.
I began turning around, to face him. I gulped down my fear again and looked up at his cold, angry face. I was going to open my mouth, but I quickly found myself collapsing to the floor.
Seeing this, Dr. Frentz almost immediately let his anger drain from his body, and he thrust his arms out to catch me before letting me hit the ground.
Before letting my eyes droop close, I looked up at Dr. Frentz... and I let out a wheezy breath.
"She passed out." I heard Dr. Frentz in the room report to one of his Assistants. "I don't know what happened."
I slowly began trying to figure out what was going on. Which Assistant of his was with him?
I gently clutched onto the soft blanket that covered most of my body. The gentle beeping of monitors around me told me that I was in one of the rooms of the hospital area.
Security Level 2, as I recall.
"If she's sick, or if she dies, you know what's going to happen to you! To us!" His Assistant nearly shouted. His voice was shaky. As if he was scared to death.
Sick or die? Was I REALLY that special to him? To the entire Facility?
Ah, I knew that Assistant's voice from anywhere. It was Andrew T. Stark. Well, that's what his name tag said. Most of Dr. Frentz's Assistants were men. No women. Actually, all of them were men. It seemed like women didn't apply to the job.
Haha. Women. Didn't they say I was one?
I opened my eyes a little and stared at the Head Scientist-Doctor. Then his Assistant.
The slender tall man, just barley taller than his boss, held a clipboard in his right arm. The man, somewhere in his middle 40s, had short light brown hair that was parted at the middle of his head. His bangs weren't that long, but they nearly touched his ears.
"I think someone's awake." Dr Stark reported. He gently smiled at me.
Dr. Frentz said nothing, and he didn't even look at me. He didn't move either.
"How are we feeling?" Dr. Stark asked, walking around the bed.
I didn't move.
"She's in trouble." Dr. Frentz moved a hand to his hip.
"Huh?" Dr. Stark wondered, looking over his shoulder at his boss.
"She got herself, and her group in trouble." He continued, "The Unit is on lock down."
I looked off to the side right when he turned to face me. I didn't want to meet his eyes.
"Well," Dr. Stark came closer to me, "We still have to take care of her. Are you feeling dizzy?"
I looked at Dr. Stark and nodded.
"Any pain anywhere?" He asked.
I suddenly became nervous. I didn't want to answer his question, but I did it anyways. I pointed at my stomach with my left hand and at my throat with my right.
Dr. Stark kind of chuckled, "Have you eaten anything?" He thought my expression was just the cutest thing.
I shook my head. Then I put two fingers from my right hand, and acted like I was slowly using an eating utensil with my left hand. Then I quickly stopped.
Dr. Stark, of course knew what my symbols, gestures, and movements meant. All of the Assistants did. He turned his torso around a little bit in Dr. Frentz's direction and gave him a serious look. "She's hungry."
Dr. Frentz looked away.
"She has to eat every meal!" Dr. Stark looked like he was getting ready to throw a fit. Or attack his own boss.
"...Hospital's Cafeteria should be open."
"Why don't you be a man, and go get the little lady something to eat? She must be starving by now." Dr. Stark was only half joking.
"Why don't you go do it yourself? You work for me." He protested.
"Sure," Dr. Stark grinned and went walking towards the door. "Won't be long."
"You better not be!" His boss nearly shouted, "I've got work to do..."
Placing a hand on the door, before walking out, he said "Is that all you like to do?"
His boss glared at him, "No! It's just for this month!"
Dr. Stark chuckled and went out, closing the door behind him.
I looked down, not knowing what to do.
Dr. Frentz walked over to the seat by the counters and sat down. He crossed his legs and rested his right hand over his knee.
I looked over at me, examining me.
I raised my head, ever so slightly and looked at him. We locked eyes only for a moment. It seemed like he was looking for something, but what exactly?
I looked back down and closed my eyes. I thought about the way he used to look at me. A kind look. Like a look that showed I was loved and cherished... Now that look is gone. He gives me this kind of mean look, as if I was always doing something wrong.
If only he would look at me like he used to. I wish I could tell that to him. Now I'm just scared... scared of what he'll do next. What he'll do to me next.
I opened my ere, and almost immediately became frightened. He was staring at me this whole time I was thinking with my eyes closed!
"Hmmm..." He hummed as if he had just been thinking about something too. Maybe he was. He got up from his seat and went to open the door for his Assistant.
Dr. Stark came in with two trays of food in both hands. He grinned at his boss's half surprised and half angry look he was giving him. "She's got to eat something!"
"We can't fatten her up!" He snapped, closing the door. It almost looked like he was meaning to slam it, but was trying his best to control his emotions.
"Exercise is key." He went over to me and set one of the trays on the night stand that was next to my bed. He pulled the over bed table, that was against the window that looked out into the hallway, with his left leg to me and set the other tray on the table.
"Cafeteria doesn't give much, but it'll do until supper." He pressed one of the buttons behind my bed, to adjust the bed, so I could sit up.
"Stay here with me, until I come back. "Dr. Frentz said, "I've got work to do."
"Right," Dr. Stark said and sat down in the chair that was by the window, "Your the Head."
After he left the room, Dr. Stark handed me eating utensils.
I took them, and quickly began eating.
"Hmmm, I wonder why Dr. Frentz never bothered to see if we could fix your vocal cords." He raised his left ankle over his knee. "I mean, of course, maybe it was a wise thing to let your cords heal out. We're still trying to search for a proper teacher to teach you to speak."
He paused and the only thing that could be heard was me chewing and drinking. This went on for only a few seconds. Dr. Stark broke the silence by saying "We need a television in here."
What the hell is a television? I wondered.
Ah, never mind, "He said, having seconds thoughts, "We certainly don't want to burn any of the Subject's brain cells."
I kind of thought that was funny. So I giggled a little.
Dr. Stark turned his head to me and smiled. He indeed did thought I was cute. Dr. Frentz just thought I was curious.
I began to wonder, why was I alive, and why was I here, and what was I meant to do? I wanted to ask Dr. Stark that, but what good answer would come from him? What good answers would come from anybody? I guess... I guess... I guess I would just have to find a reason.. but what reason exactly? What kind of reason?
When Dr. Stark noticed I was done eating the first tray, he switched it out with the second one.
"You got quite the appetite." The man pointed out, "Your so skinny too."
I didn't know whether or not if I should take that as a complement or not. I just shrugged.
Dr. Stark chuckled, "Gee, I wonder why Dr. Frentz never sees you as cute," He chuckled again, "I guess our eyes are different."
Then the door opened and in came Dr. Frentz. "You." He demanded his Assistant, "Go get your side of the work done. Let her rest after she's done eating."
Dr. Stark raised his hands up, yielding, "Whatever." He wanted to protest, but he knew he could never say no to his boss. He winked at me before leaving the room.
Dr. Frentz looked at me and said, "Get some rest." He gently ordered, "We might need you tomorrow. I'm going to have to come see you in the morning for checkups."
Before I pushed the over bed table to the side, I prayed for Dr. Frentz to not break his promise.
