Chapter 5 - Office and Library

Following the map, it doesn't take long until I finish my trip.

Since the office wasn't very far away, it only takes a few minutes of floating to arrive at my destination.

So here I am, in front of the office.

Just like most rooms in this place, the withered door is made from mostly wood and the metal parts showed signs of rust. The only difference is that this door actually had a metal nameplate which was pretty much unreadable due to the rust.

Well, even if it wasn't rusted I still wouldn't be able to read it.

After double-checking if it the room in front of me was the office, using the「Arcane mapping」skill, I floated forward and passed through the door before inspecting the surroundings.

The room was about as big as the solar, a little more than ten by ten metres, and gave off the vibe of a CEO's office except in a medieval style.

On both, the left and right sides of the room stood big bookshelf that covered the walls and housed many books and files. The floor was covered in red dusty carpet and the furniture of the room which were made from wood were withered and cracked.

But what really caught my attention was the wooden office desk on the other side of the room and what sat behind it...a skeleton.

It wore an old red robe that looked like something royalty from stories would wear and had a shiny golden crown decorated with jewels sitting on its head.

It laid back on the wooden chair dead still.

What the hell...

Why in the world is this here for?

I've always seen dead bodies and carcasses in games and movies, let alone skeletons, but seeing the real thing for the first time gives me the creeps.

Crap. Should I still look around?

Even if it's just a skeleton, as someone who grew up in a city, searching a room with a dead body in it feels off.

Guh, I feel so discouraged now.

....urgh whatever, it's not like the skeleton would mind right?

I'll quickly search this place for anything useful and get out when I'm done.

The first thing I did when I began searching was to throw all the books and files onto my dimensional storage. Although I can't actually read any of it, there's no harm in taking them since my storage has no limit anyway, you never know when it might come in useful. I also collected the books back at the solar on my way here.

I might find a chance to learn this world's language as well somewhere in the future, or maybe even sell these things if they have value. It'd be a waste to simply throw them away or leave them behind.

After a while of collecting the books, I noticed that some of these were also giving off a tingly feeling just like the magic items back in the treasury.

I guess I'll appraise them later, for now, I just wanna get out of this office as soon as possible.

With the convenience of both my「Telekinesis」and「Dimensional Storage」it doesn't take long until the only thing in the room to search is the desk with the skeleton sitting behind it...

Well, here goes.

Pardon my intrusion.

After giving a moment of prayer I begin to search the desk for anything to take, carefully trying not to touch the skeleton. Surprisingly, the only things I found in all of the drawers in the desk is a letter and a pair of round glasses.

The letter looked quite old and brittle but it should still be openable. The glasses, on the other hand, were in decent condition.

I'm picking up the same tingly feeling from before so it's probably a magic item.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to appraise it would it? Mr skeleton probably won't mind anyway.

---

Object: Magic glasses

Enchantments:「Language Translation」

Description: Allows the user to understand the writing of different languages when reading through the glass.

---

UWAH!

THIS IS IT!

Hehehe, it seems that luck has been by my side ever since I came to this world.

Why didn't this ever happen in my previous life? So unfair.

After fiddling around with the pair of glasses a bit more and celebrating my luck, I used「Magic Extraction」to gain the translation skill before moving on to the brittle looking letter.

On closer inspection, the letter seems to have a wax seal on it with the same symbol as the flags I saw out in the hallways, two crossed swords with wings behind it.

Maybe its the castle's symbol?

Since the letter was left here with the magic glasses, doesn't that mean the letter was intended for anyone who explored this place? In other words, for me?

After looking at the skeleton sitting in the chair next to me for a moment I turned my attention back to the letter I'm holding and begin to open it, carefully trying not to tear it since it was super old.

As I unfold the letter inside, a text which was in the same language as the books from the solar reveals itself on the paper.

...I can read it!

Unlike before, I'm actually able to understand the words. I don't get how it works but it's amazing!

[To whoever finds this paper in my office.]

[It may be decades or even centuries before this letter is found, I have written this letter in hopes to leave behind the legacy of my kingdom.]

[If you are reading this then you are most likely an adventurer or explorer of some sort. Either way, I congratulate you in getting this deep into this dungeon.]

Adventurer? Explorer?

Uhhh, I'm pretty sure I'm neither. But I'm still qualified to read this right?

Also, the writer is talking about a dungeon? As in dungeons from games?

[During the year 659 the underground kingdom of Morvas, along with the cave it was residing in, was turned into an underground dungeon.]

[The walls of our underground kingdom began to shift and monsters in many different shapes and forms began to appear, some recognisable while others never seen before.]

[Due to the sudden transformation all but the castle was lost and those who did not flee quickly enough lost their lives. After organising an escape with all the soldiers and any surviving citizens, I as the king chose to stay behind.]

[Those who have successfully escaped have most likely become refugees of other kingdoms and will soon move on from this tragedy and leave behind the kingdom of Morvas.]

[Other than myself, there should be no other person within this castle.]

[As the king of this fallen country and the last inhabitant of this castle, I only wish for one thing, I hope that whoever is reading this can find a way to preserve this castle as it may be the last evidence of the kingdom of Morvas' existence.]

[In exchange for doing this, I will give you the castle itself as well as all the treasures in it.]

[Yours sincerely, King Godefray III]

So your name is Godefray the third...

Uhhhh...

The location of the vault and how to enter it was written on the back of the letter but... sorry old man, I'm one step ahead of you in that regard.

Welp, at least there's consent to me taking all the treasures now. I practically haven't stolen right?

I'll make sure to make good use of these treasures sir.

That aside, for him to have stayed behind even when everything was going downhill is pretty...amazing?

If it were me I probably would have bolted...

He didn't write much in the letter either and got straight to the point.

Maybe its got something to do with pride as royalty?

As for the kingdom and its citizens, sorry for your loss old man.

Please rest in peace sir.

Or maybe you'll reincarnate just like me and live a new life. Who knows?

After sympathising for a while and giving a silent prayer to the skeleton which is most likely the king, I stored the letter and the formerly magical glasses into my inventory before casting one last glance at king Godefry's skeleton and leaving through the door.

Even though I've already sympathised with the king, the skeleton itself still gives me the creeps.

I'll probably come back in the future and give him a proper burial but moving it is too much for my weak mind right now...

Soon after passing through the door and floating down the hallway, according to the arcane mapping skill, the double door of what is most likely the library appears in view.

Much like the office the door of the office, the library door had a metal nameplate except this time I can read it.

Yep. This seems to be it.

Now that I can read, I can finally get more information about this place.

Hehe, I can't wait.

One again I move forward to phase through the old door full of expectation. As if detecting my presence, multiple lamps begin to light up in a synchronised order starting from the ones closest to me revealing a grand library straight out of a fantasy film.

It leaves me in owe but I've pretty much gotten used to surprises by now.

Right then...you don't mind if I borrow the whole library right king Godefray?
