Chapter 2 - FLIGHT 002 - FIRST LESSON

Class 1 – D's new teacher has just arrived, standing tall in front of the class, with his short brown hair neatly fixed and bangs that parted to the right. He had a bright aura that matched his cheerful smile.

Akagi Andy, the new teacher, arrived just in time at 7 AM.

He started his first day with a short introduction of himself.

"I'm Akagi Andy, 22 years old, you can call me Sir Andy for short. I know it's a bit sudden, but I'll be your new class adviser, Aviation and ICT teacher starting today. For the days to come, I hope we all get along!"

He took a piece of chalk and told the class, "As much as I want you guys to introduce yourselves, I'm afraid it's time we begin our lesson."

He spun around and began to scribble words and numbers on the board. He hasn't finished writing an entire sentence when one of the girls abruptly interrupted him.

"Sir Andy!" an arrogant voice called from the rear of the room.

A girl with a slim figure and pale skin stood up. She had long black hair and bangs. Her dark purple eyes gazed at the new teacher.

"Yes? Is there a problem?" the new teacher politely asked, trying to make a good impression in front of his students.

"You said you'll be the new Aviation teacher, correct?"

"Yes, that's true, why?"

"Well, I was wondering just how well you will be able to teach us?"

"Sorry, what do you mean... Miss uhmm?"

"It's Minako, Futaba Minako. What I'm saying is, are you capable of teaching us such a difficult subject?"

"Yes, I think I can," Andy confidently replied.

"Are you sure, because from what I could see, you only have two stripes on your shoulder garment. Doesn't that mean that you're just a Second Officer, or maybe even just a trainee?" the girl insulted.

The girls at the picked up Minako's lead, they began supporting her doubts.

"That's right!"

"How are we supposed to learn anything if you can't teach it to us?"

"Experience is key, after all!"

The girls in front, including the class president, were getting concerned that their actions may trigger their new teacher's anger.

However, Andy didn't show signs of being insulted. He just stood there with a confident smile on his face.

"I don't see a problem being a Second Officer or even a trainee. Just because I have a low position doesn't mean I can't teach you this lesson."

"But that's just - " before she could even finish her sentence, Minako's words were cut by Sir Andy.

"Before you judge me, I would appreciate it if you could listen to my class first," Sir Andy politely told his students. He spun around and continued scribbling with an enthusiastic look on his face.

"Stupid teacher!" Minako whispered to the girls around her.

"He's certainly a tough shell to crack!" Minako's seatmate, Hikawa Akane added. Although she has the looks, a tall and sexy figure with voluptuous and beautiful proportions, her attitude is something that all boys fail to notice.

As soon as he finished writing on the board, Andy looked at his students and began his lesson.

"So, before we proceed to our discussion, can anybody tell me anything about the words written on the board?"

The words listed on the board were as follows:

"Brakes – Set,

Throttles – Idle,

Flaps - 2,

Spoilers - Retracted,

Landing Lights - On,

Strobe Lights - On,

Engine Instruments, Nav Equipment - Check,

Takeoff Briefing - Check Complete,

Request Takeoff Clearance"

To the eyes of an Aviation student, these words can only be found in one certain paperwork.

"Yes, you, the short girl with glasses!" Andy pointed.

Sir Andy was pointing at Kurokawa Karen, Ayaka's seatmate. She straightened her back, and her long brown hair reached down to her waist.

"The checklist, sir."

"Yes, but which specific checklist, and for what aircraft?"

The girl beside Karen raised her hand. Andy called her and she stood up,

"The takeoff checklist for an A320, sir," Ayaka answered with confidence.

"Correct! Now as we all know, in every phase of flight, there are certain procedures on what the pilots must do to ensure the safety and proper performance of their aircraft."

With his left hand holding on to his notebook, Andy continued his explanation.

"Now one of the critical stages of flight is takeoff, the stage where the aircraft leaves the runway or the ground. Now the takeoff checklist consists of several items or procedures that need to be accomplished to ensure a safe takeoff," his words showed intelligence and enjoyment.

"Now let's talk about the specific steps or items that compose the takeoff checklist. Specifically, we'll be dealing with the before takeoff, takeoff and climb-out checklist of an Airbus A320 operating below Maximum Landing Weight, winds calm, and no issues."

With introductions to their new lesson over, Andy began explaining the items in the before takeoff checklist.

"First off, the before takeoff checklist, which is written on the board," he pointed at his handwriting which borders between the definition of legible and illegible.

"Brakes - set. Before takeoff, an aircraft is advised to 'taxi into position and hold' or 'line up and wait' on their takeoff runway. Now you don't want an aircraft moving forward when the controller instructs you to wait on the runway. Hence the reason why brakes are turned on, or set, before takeoff.

Throttles - idle, same reason. If your engines are generating thrust, your plane will move forward, and since you're still waiting for clearance for takeoff, it is ill-advised to add power to your engines.

Flaps - 2 now can anyone tell me the purpose of the flaps on takeoff?" ending his explanation with a question is a teaching method that enhances interaction with the students. It improves the student's understanding of the lesson and gives the teacher insights about their level of knowledge and understanding.

Flipping through the pages of his notebook, he called out a student to answer his question, "Hmm, Emi Kato?"

Kato, the smart girl with perfect proportions, stood up and answered, "The flaps, sir, increase the surface of the wing generating more lift."

"Correct!" Sir Andy remarked, "Lift is critical during takeoff, you would like to maximize the amount of lift produced on the wings to make a safe takeoff. Flaps 2 is a good configuration as it generates more lift without dragging the plane. However, in some cases, pilots configure their Flaps to either setting 1 + F or setting 3; it varies according to the runway length, wind conditions, takeoff weight, and many other factors."

Continuing with the lesson, he proceeded with the next item on the checklist.

"Spoilers - Off, this is pretty self-explanatory. Spoilers drag the plane, and drag is something you don't want during takeoff since it reduces the lift generated by the wings. So, keep the spoilers off for the remainder of takeoff.

Landing Lights and Strobe Lights - On. These are critical especially at night or in unclear weather. For the strobe lights, it makes your jet more visible to other planes within the vicinity, while the landing lights make it easier for the pilots to see the surroundings.

Engine Instruments and Nav. Equipment - Checked and Working, you don't want to begin takeoff only to get lost or be blindsided by your instruments. Your instruments are vital as it gives you loads of information about your plane's performance and location. Don't neglect this.

And finally, is the Takeoff Briefing for Takeoff Speeds - Done and Checked. It is very crucial that all the pilots in the cockpit know of your takeoff data. What is decision speed or V1? What is the rotation speed, Vr? And what is your safety speed or V2? These speeds are important to ensure a safe takeoff, especially during an emergency."

He finished off the lesson with a quick summary before asking the students to summarize it themselves. This increases knowledge retention for both parties.

"Is everything clear about the before takeoff checklist?"

To the students, the lesson was easily understood. The way he discussed in a detailed manner made the lesson more comprehensible. Using simple words to explain complicated facts is an excellent instruction method that helps students grasp their lessons.

The girls were impressed by Andy's teaching method, he was very knowledgeable of the subject. He added humor to make the discussion less boring. His enthusiasm complimented his confidence, with these, he has the class's full attention.

Unfortunately, there are few who neglect to appreciate Sir Andy's effort. Futaba Minako, Hikawa Akane, and several other students from the rear continued attacking their teacher with insults and nonsensical questions.

But the new teacher is oblivious to his students' actions, for every interruption that they made, he will brush it off with a confident answer that impressed the remainder of the class. His patience didn't cease to exist.

This attitude of his also confused the students, wondering whether their teacher is oblivious to insults, or is a plain masochist.

But despite all the interruptions from the arrogant students, Andy continued his discussion until the end of Aviation class at 9 AM. His discussion was informative, interactive, and comprehensive.

When the bell rang for their morning break time, Sir Andy picked up his book and notebook, and with a smile, bid goodbye to his class,

"Goodbye 1 - D, I'll be seeing you later for ICT!"

Waving his hand as he left the room, he closed the door and faded from the student's view.

"That was fun!"

With all specialization classes ending at 9 AM, all the students proceeded with their break time. The noise of chattering filled the corridors and classrooms. But it's not just students who are having their break time.

"HAUUU! I could finally take a break," Sir Kaminari, the Electronics teacher, stretched his hand up in the air and took a deep breath.

Feeling tired after having a straight two-hour class, the Programming teacher of 1-C, Sugimori Akio, asked the exhausted blonde-haired "How's your class today, Kaminari-san?"

"Pretty normal. None of the resistors blew up today, so everything's fine."

The faculty is bustling and boisterous, teachers were busy with paperwork and lesson planning. For the Science teacher, Kunikida Michael, this scene is nothing new.

"Faculty is busy as always, isn't it, Mark?"

"Yep, sure is!" the Math teacher replied.

The two teachers are waiting for a friend of theirs to come to the faculty.

"How tall is he now?"

Looking at Michael as a reference, he estimated a few inches above his messy black hair, "I'd say 5'11. You're 5'9 so he's taller. He's very slim too, unlike you who's body looks fit after going to the gym every weekend."

"If he looks slim then that's convenient, he was awfully skinny back in high school," Michael teased.

"At least he has the initiative to fix his hair, unlike someone I know who has messy black hair and doesn't even bother to fix it."

The faculty room's door swung open, an unfamiliar person entered the room. The teachers were unsure of who the man is, but he bears a striking resemblance to the headteacher.

The man introduced himself, "Good morning, I'm the new teacher, Akagi Andy."

"Ahh, he's here!"

"ANDDYYYYY!" Michael yelled from the distance, annoying the busy bees in the faculty.

The two friends approached the new teacher with a welcoming demeanor.

"Andyyy, it's been a while, how'd you been?"

"Ohisashiburi desu (Long time no see), Michael-nii. I'm doing great, how about you?"

"I'm doing good too. It's nice seeing you after all those years. So, you have a girlfriend?"

"Nope, not yet. I'm too busy with training that I can't find time to go out."

"I see, well Mark here got himself one while you're away."

"Ehhh, Mark-niichan, you have one?" Andy asked, stars sparkled in his eyes.

"Yeah! It's been a long time, Andy. I'm glad to see you looking well."

"I'm glad to see you two as well. It's been years since I last saw my two senpais. I'm happy to see you two doing well."

"Your senpais and nii-sans," Michael enthusiastically added before ruffling the newbie's hair.

"Well look who's blocking the door!" a lady's voice called.

Behind Andy, stood a lady with a slim figure. Her bob-cut hair and straight bangs are a very familiar sight if you're a teacher of this school.

"AHHH, aneekiiii!" Andy yelled excitedly.

He threw his arms around her neck and pressed his chest onto her, their foreheads touched and their lips just centimeters away from touching; catching the lady off guard. He looked extremely happy, like a kid seeing his mother after a long time.

His cheeks were red, and his smile reached far and wide. "I missed you so much!"

"It's been a while, Andy!" the lady replied with a gentle tone. It was the headteacher, Akagi Aneko.

To the surprise of many of the teachers, "Aneki (Older sister)?"

Aneko patted his brother's head, and with a mellow voice, told him, "I've missed you, my cute little brother!"

"Hm-mm, I missed you too, Aneki! I really wuv you!" trying to look cute, the new teacher was extremely happy to be reunited with his sister.

The atmosphere in the faculty room was heartwarming but one must not forget that this room is no place for such moments.

"This is really heartwarming an all but" - Mark tugged Andy's collar -"this is the faculty, Andy!"

"I think Mark's right," Aneko added, "why don't we talk at my office. Mark, Michael you come too!"

"Haiii!" the three young men answered.

The group walked to the headteacher's office with Andy clinging onto her sister's shoulders. His arms wrapped around her neck, and his head resting on her shoulders.

"I'm really happy to see you, Andy!" Aneko told his brother, "It's been 5 years since you left the house and almost 7 months since we last met."

"Hmm, I miss you too, Aneki! I haven't seen you in a while, so I was worried about how you, Mom, and Dad are doing."

"We're doing fine," she reassured, "Although I moved out of the house just last year and live in an apartment now."

"Ehhh, why?"

"The house was too messy with me around. I told Mom and Dad I'll move out and they seem to be worried about me. Having their son leave the house at the age of 17 for flight school might have scared them."

"Ehehe, sorry about that, Aneki."

"Enough, about that, more importantly" - Aneko sat on her chair, and gave Andy a serious look - "let's talk about your new job."

The three listened intently to what the headteacher has to say.

"As you know, you will be taking charge of Class 1 - D's Aviation, ICT, and homeroom class. I'm quite reluctant about having you, but I had no choice."

She leaned back on her seat and expressed her impression of the new teacher.

"Just teach them well and make sure they understand the lesson. I have no doubt that my smart little brother who was once an ICT master and loves planes so much, could teach the subject that he excels at,"

"Hm-mm, you can count on me, Aneki!" he proudly puffed his chest after hearing his sister's remark.

"If you need any help, ask your senpais, Mark and Michael. The three of you have been together long enough that you treat them like your brothers."

Michael, upon hearing his superior's complement, chuckled with pride. He was elbowed by Mark in the chest upon noticing his reaction.

"Also, please get along with the students. I know they're all girls and they may become clingy at times. I know you don't want other girls besides me clingy with you -" Aneko blushed, acting shy and proud - "but try to tolerate them as much as possible."

"Hm-mm, I could handle it!"

"And tell me if those students start bullying or insulting you," thinking about that, made Aneko frustrated.

His doting sister side kicked in, she clenched his fists hard and her inner demon awakened.

"I won't let them do those horrible things to my cute little brother!"

"Ehehe, don't worry about it, as long as they are eager to learn, I'll be happy to be their teacher."

"Good for you, you can stay at the faculty now. The stall between Michael and Mark are empty so you could stay there, just don't bother your senpais at work, okay?"

"Haiiii!"

Aneko left her seat and walked past the three men, "I have some inspections to do and a meeting with the subject coordinators, so I'll get going now. You three, go to the faculty and take your breaks. I'll be seeing you later." The four of them left the room, waved goodbye and went their separate ways.

On their way to the faculty room, the two senpais were whispering behind Andy's back.

"Have these two always been like this?" Michael wondered.

"Yup, Andy has a sister complex, remember?"

"Huh? I forgot how odd they were."

Break time ended at 9: 30 AM; Mark and Michael have classes to attend to, so Andy was left alone in the faculty with teachers he barely knows. Feeling shy, he stayed in his area and distracted himself from getting bored by reading a book on Aviation.

Time passed by quickly, soon it was lunch break already, 12:30 PM. The three friends ate lunch together in the faculty room while chatting and recalling past experiences during their high school lives.

Thirty minutes passed and lunch break is over, the two left again for their classes while Andy stayed at the faculty, preparing for his ICT class with 1 - D at 2 PM.

Inside 1 - D's classroom, the girls knew of Sir Andy's teaching method and knowledge about Aviation. However, their interests have now shifted to how he'll teach their ICT class.

The front door swung open, Andy entered the room, calm but more enthusiastic than earlier. Seeing her sister again made him extremely happy and hyped up.

"Okay, time for ICT. Take your seats, bring out your books or notebooks," he instructed the students. "We will be continuing your past lesson on the Turbo Caspar programming."

Once an avid fan of programming during his high school days, Andy is actually a great programmer, able to formulate a code and fix errors within a matter of minutes. He has experience with 4 different programming languages, 2 of which he will be teaching.

Explaining the flow of a program and the function of each code is normally easy but difficult to understand, but for Andy, this is a piece of cake. He knows how to substitute words to make his explanation more comprehensible to the students. He makes use of simple examples that become more complicated over time to slowly develop their progress.

At midafternoon, most of the students will feel tired, bored, and sleepy, but the enthusiastic and interested tone of his voice keeps his students awake and focused during the entirety of the class. He was interactive and knowledgeable, in a single glance, you won't notice that this person has no teaching experience at all.

To the students of Class 1 - D, their ICT time was fruitful. They grasped the lesson well and enjoyed the class as well. At 3 PM, ICT class ended, Sir Andy left the room and went back to the faculty.

As for 1 – D, their classes continued until 4 PM, Homeroom time. At which point, Sir Andy went back to finish their class.

He double-checked their attendance, consulted the master list, helped with cleaning the room, and once they're done, he dismissed his class and bid his goodbyes to his student's leaving the room.

Once everyone has left, he made a quick sweep of the room and locked it. On his way back to the faculty, he reflected on the happenings on his first day of teaching.

"That was fun! Teaching those girls about the subject I love, discussing to them one of my hobbies, and seeing their happy faces when they learn something new, it was a fun experience. I even get to spend time with my Aneki and my nii-sans, I miss them so much!"

The day has come to an end, but for the new teacher, today is just the start of a wonderful experience.

While smiling and childishly skipping in the school corridors, he felt his heart race and overflow with happiness.

"Today was fun! I can't wait for tomorrow!"
