Kate slumped back in her chair. It had been a rough week. Without Dan around, the last 3 months had been hell. It was nice to just have the day be done. The Enigma Detective Agency had half the staff and twice the work ever since.
As if having overheard Kate's thoughts, the phone interrupted with a loud tone. This wasn't the Enigma line, but rather Kate's personal cell. With an exasperated sigh, Kate reached into her pocket and answered. She began her usual introduction but was interrupted by a rather urgent voice on the other end.
"Kate, this is Donovan. I'm texting you a location. I need you here now. We found Daniel's body today, freshly dead. I think we're going to need work fast on this one. Standard rate?"
"Of course, Chief. I'm leaving now." Kate hung up and threw her coat on. She flipped the answering machine on the Enigma line to the out of office script and left the office. Enigma operated out of a business center with plenty of other companies sharing the floor, but Kate made sure to lock up anyways just incase.
The adrenaline had already started. A break from endless mundane cases, and hopefully answers. She'd already accepted Dan's death a long time ago, but he was alright until just recently. Was he hiding? Running? Kate knew the answers were out there, and she was going to uncover the truth of the night that plunged her life into chaos.
Of course, she had yet to experience the true chaos that awaited her in that back alley and beyond.
