Chereads / Aegis System: A Modern Knight / Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 | Guts

Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 | Guts

I'm going to die.

Robyn sighed, lost in his head once more, facing his impending demise. Davos was right; when it came to an actual fight, Robyn was ill-equipped. This beast was unlike anything he'd ever imagined when it came to werewolves. This beast was vicious and bloodthirsty. It was overwhelming in strength; even with one arm, he stood no chance.

I'm a failure.

Even with the Aegis, he wasn't able to hold his own. At first, he felt such an immense amount of power, quickly putting him as an equal with this creature's strength. However, due to his lack of confidence, his resonance with the Aegis slowly began to weaken. Robyn was not mentally prepared for something like fighting for his life. Panic was infesting his mind regardless of how much he tried to seem determined; he did not believe in himself.

Why am I so weak.

Robyn's mind was a complete wreck. Despite having wished for something magic to exist and crazy creatures like this werewolf to be real, it was too much for him. Even with the Aegis, he was just a lowly squire. He wasn't even a full-fledged Knight, despite that Claire and Wilhelm still called him one. It wasn't something he earned, he thought, much less 'The Aegis Knight'. It was an honor he was unworthy to wield.

It's not like I could save anyone anyways.

He was scared, facing down the mouth of what was a terrifying creature ever, he wasn't suited for something like becoming a Hero. Even when they first attacked, he was all but useless. If it weren't for Claire and Wilhelm, he would've died right there. He can't even use magic or any real martial fighting ability, just the useless training dummy lessons Davos had him frequently do; he wasn't a natural fighter, he thought. He was just a squire.

"As long as you have the willpower to continue fighting..." a voice echoed.

He could hear his heartbeat thud. It was slow at first, then quickening in pace. His blood was racing throughout his body. He couldn't give up.

"...brainwashing passed down from generations of lies," another voice pulsed through his mind.

That's right, the church, the knights, everything he believed in was a lie. They all were lying to him, content with believing in such horrible acts committed by people afraid of something they couldn't control.

"There's no such thing as werewolves..." a voice mocked.

Like a fire in his heart growing out of control, he steeled himself. There were such things, and even Davos lied to him. He became enraged with anger, all the lies he had been told and nonsense he believed. A Knight protects the people, precisely what he was trying to do right now.

"...the Aegis will not fail!"

As the werewolf attempt to finish the fight, biting down on Robyn's head, the Aegis surged with power, his armor turning golden and forming around him again. The beast's teeth broken against the metal, and Robyn grabbed its arm, freeing himself from its hold. Kicking the wolf away from him, it growled and leaped back at Robyn, trying to grab ahold of him. He knocked his arm away from him and slammed his fist into its face, knocking him to the ground.

Robyn saw the explosion come from the building and attempted to make his way to check on Claire and her family. He leaped through the air with ease and tried to wave his way through the smoke. Wilhelm was standing over his daughter still, both safe, and walked up to them. His helmet came down, and they both were delighted to see him, Wilhelm noticeably exhausted from trying his best to protect the entire apartment from damage.

"You managed to awaken the Aegis," Wilhelm said, picking his daughter up.

Before Robyn could say anything, his helmet formed back over his head, and the werewolf appeared from behind, slamming him into the wall. The beast clawed at his armor, trying its best to remove the armor with no success. Out of frustration, he picked Robyn up with its remaining arm and charged him through a wall into the hallway, knocking them both into the elevator doors. It landed strike after strike against him, until the doors gave in, knocking them both down the elevator shaft.

The werewolf was growling as they fell, the wolf slamming him down into the bottom of the shaft, through the elevator itself. Robyn laid in the metal heap, his body sore all over, and the werewolf leaped back up toward the fourth floor to where Claire and Wilhelm were and stomped its way back into the remains of their apartment. Baring its fangs toward Wilhelm, it slowly approached the two.

The ding from the elevator sounded, and Robyn walked out from the busted lift, holding his chest. The wolf turned around and grinned, rushing toward him again, in an attempt to knock him back down the shaft. Summoning the last bit of his strength Robyn stood his ground, preventing the werewolf from pushing him at all.

"I will not yield!" He shouted, drawing a blade and separating the wolf's arm from its shoulder with ease.

The beast howled in pain, backing up from Robyn. He tossed the arm to the side, marching closer to it. The fire in his heart continuing to rage, and the werewolf began to cower in fear. He raised his blade; his aura and power raging from the Aegis were oppressive.

"Disappear," he said coldly, striking down the werewolf.

A moment passed, and he fell to his knees in what remained of their front door. The armor began to deconstruct back to the ring, and he coughed up blood. Falling onto his back, he groaned in pain, bruising, and cracked ribs among the many injuries he suffered. He felt his breathing begin to slow down, and he couldn't keep his eyes open anymore, passing out as he succumbed to his injuries.

Claire and her Dad rushed to his side, trying to get his attention but he was unresponsive.

"This kid is actually something special," Wilhelm said, picking him up and bringing him into the house, "We need to get moving Claire, go grab your mother."

Claire nodded and ran to the bedroom door, trying to open it but it was stuck. She attempted to ram it a few times but it still wouldn't budge. She raised her hand, summoning a sphere of wind to her and thrusting it at the hand of the door, knocking it wide open. She ran into, looking for her mom but she wasn't there.

"Dad, Mom is missing!" she exclaimed.
