ASH POV
The cool night breeze was pleasant on my skin. The bright orb of the full moon danced upon the ocean's surface. As I lay on the cooled sand, the faint distinct markings of paw prints become visible in the white shifting sands.
Like they were glowing upon the grains of sand.
'Paw prints? But the barrier around the village, the only animals are our familiars.'
My eyes follow the markings throughout the grains of sand until, a fluffy black and grey kitten that could fit in the palms of my hands, was at the end.
'He looks like Sampson when he was a kitten and this small.' Memories flooded back to me and a sense of nostalgia crashed over me in waves of excitement and sadness.
'Before he died in my arms.'
The tiny kitten stares at me intensely.
"Meow?" the fluffy black and grey kitten tilts his head to the side. As if he is debating on something.
"Sampson?" I attempt the name.
"Meow." The kitten's head shifts to the other side.
"hey boy, is that you?" I attempt again.
*Purr… Purr* the kitten seems to remember me and instantly his "jet engine" kicks in.
"Meow!" he pads over to my outstretched awaiting hands.
"Sampson! Man, I have missed you boy!" The kitten tilts his head back to look into my eyes.
'Those eyes... they look like mine'
Sampson's silver-grey eyes bore into mine, as if he were begging me to know something.
But what?
.............................................….
Sounds of screaming and shouting echoed throughout the darkened room that was my domain. Growing lighter as the approaching daylight started to peek over the horizon.
*Crash*
*Smack*
The sound of fists colliding into a soft surface.
"WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY!" Father's gruff, gravelly shout was heard throughout the house.
"I have feelings…. FOR SOMEONE ELSE!" Kol's simple explanation, causes a dull ache to form in my heart to slowly build.
'I have feelings for someone.'
'… feelings… for …. Someone' my elder twin's words continue to echo throughout my room.
"YOU HEAR ME… BOY!" Father's long drawn out words impaired by the beverage of the night. "YOU WILL DO….. AS I ….. SAY!" a pause. I can picture that he is taking another swig of the thick amber glass bottle clutch in his left hand.
I had seen this father/ son exchange many times.
My twin believed that it was only him that felt our father's ire.
Little did he know.
There were others… and in cruder ways than what was exchanged between Father and Son.
*Giggle*
The high-pitched giggle of a female could be heard.
As if the "conversation" was abandoned, the sound of slamming doors reverberated off the walls making pictures rattle and shake, and throughout the once quiet two-story cottage.
'but what doors?' I puzzle.
I pick up a broken picture of a woman with silver grey eyes and black velvet locks that framed her eyes.
Twin boys in her lap, the woman in the picture wore a large smile that revealed perfect white teeth.
'Mom.'
"Even though I didn't know you for long…" a silent tear sliding down my cheek. "those were the happiest times of our lives!"
Taking the only picture of my mother back to my bed, I silently cry.
Sleep eventually claims me again.
But, Sampson was nowhere to be found.
My subconscious dropped me on the cool beach, that was more of a home than my actual home.
'I realize that I am only dreaming, and that this peace is only temporary, but was my kitten a figment of my imagination? Which seemed to only play tricks on me?

DAYS LATER
Sampson was the last thing on my mind the day before our 17th birthday. However, as I'm sprawled out on my own personal beach. Which was mine and I could do whatever I wished with it. A familiar black and grey kitten padded over and launched itself on to my stomach.
An *oooff* sound escaped as the tiny creature's full body weight crashed onto my gut.
'for such a tiny thing, you have the weight of a large cat'
"Damn Sam!" the kitten looks up into my eyes.
Silver- grey on Silver- grey.
The same look that I received before when we were first reunited.
"you need to lay off the dream tuna!"
As if Sampson understood, his tiny mouth hung open as if he were astonished.
The feint out line of a vein rose on his forehead.
As that moment I was not expecting the swipe of those needle-like claws, as they swiped at my flesh.
But the familiar sting and itch the followed brought my train of thought back to when Sampson was alive.
"I've missed you..."
A female voice I had forgotten.
