Chapter 167 - Exam site

Upon boarding the ship, Gon bids goodbye to the inhabitants of Whale Island and shouted, "Once I become the best Hunter in the world, I will come back!"

His shout attracted the attention of other passengers on board who also came to take the Hunter exam. Without minding the mocks of others, Gon observed the ship.

As for Blaize, he quietly stood in the dock enjoying the sea breeze and watched Gon's actions. He also noticed Kurapika and Leorio among the ship passengers.

As he knows what will happen next, he just enjoyed the process. Everything went as occurred in the anime.

Gon told the Captain of the ship that a storm is coming. Just as he said, the storm raged in their way, while nearly every exam applicant on the ship suffered seasick except for Gon, Blaize, Kurapika, and Leorio.

After a few minutes, the Captain summoned them and asked the reasons for taking the Hunter Exam. Gon quickly answered that he wants to know why his father chose to be a Hunter.

After Gon, Blaize answered. "Just for fun as I am bored."

As for Leorio and Kurapika, they both refused to reveal their reason. But, as soon as the Captain announced it's part of the exam they told their own reasons.

Kurapika tells about the Phantom Troupe who annihilated his Kurta clan and he's taking the hunter exam as it would help him to revenge. Followed by Kurapika, Leorio declared he's taking the exam for money.

The comments shared by Kurapika and Leorio spark the animosity between the two and they go out to the deck to duel as shown in the series.

Blaize watched everything with interest while the next storm came in their way, one that even the Captain of the ship took seriously.

Gon accompanied the crew member Katzo to help with the sail while Blaize followed them outside. Leorio and Kurapika stood face to face without bothering about the storm.

But suddenly, Katzo who came out of the cabin was tossed out of the ship because of a wave. Leorio and Kurapika couldn't even react before Gon jumped out.

The other two promptly reacted to catch Gon's legs. The incident also helped Leorio and Kurapika sort out the dispute among them.

As for the Captain, he's impressed with them and promised them to bring the ship to the nearest port to the exam site.

--

"huh...that's strange!" Leorio muttered and explained. "That the cedar tree is in the opposite direction of Zaban City, where this year Hunter exam is going to be held!"

"Gon, perhaps you misheard?" Kurapika spoke.

"No, the captain said to go to the cedar tree." Gon shook his head. He then asked Blaize. "Blaize, what do you think we should do?"

"Trust your instincts."

"Ok. Then I am going to check out the tree the captain spoke of." Gon said while Kurapika followed suit.

Leorio bids goodbye to them and walked in opposite direction but he soon came back knowing it was a trap.

"Are you also from Whale Island?" Leorio tried to strike a conversation with Blaize.

"I come from a distant land. I just stay in Whale Island temporarily." Blaize replied.

The conversation is short because both Kurapika and Leorio find Blaize is different from them. With their keen perception, they could tell he's a very strong person.

--

They soon reached a small deserted town. A group of masked people appears with an old woman blocking their way. The old woman told them they have to undergo the quiz in order to reach the cedar tree.

Clearing the quiz, a door to a tunnel opens. They are instructed to meet the navigators living in a house by the cedar tree. Upon reaching the cedar tree, they find the navigators, a couple being attacked by a shape-shifting creature, the Kiriko.

After passing their test, thanks to Gon, they agreed to fly them to the exam site.

--

Gon, Blaize, Leorio, and Kurapika arrive at Zaban City under the guidance of the navigator. He then led them to a small restaurant and helped them to the backroom after providing a password to the restaurant owner.

The elevator descended a hundred floors below leading them to a tunnel where all the applicants waited. Their arrival attracted everyone's gaze.

"The atmosphere is strange down here," Leorio spoke.

"They vastly differ from all the hunter applicants that we saw before."

have seen." Kurapika commented.

"Hello...please take a number." Beans came and gave them the identification numbers. Blaize got the number 406, the last one.

Shortly after, they are befriended by Tonpa, the rookie crusher. He told them about the other applicants. Particularly, Hisoka, who nearly killed an examiner on last year's examination.

Then it happened when an applicant bumped into Hisoka without apologizing. The latter did something that made the applicant's arms disappear.

Blaize smiled seeing him. He could tell Hisoka used his Nen and tricks to achieve this effect.

Sensing his gaze, Hisoka turned his head just to see Blaize. He was shocked and froze for a second before coming back to his senses.

As the Gon's trio spoke with Tonpa, Blaize went to meet Hisoka. "It's been some time, I hope your strength has improved since the last time we met."

At that moment, the bell sounded while the Examiner for the first round appeared. Satotz introduced himself and tells the participants to follow him through the tunnel as part of the first exam phase.

The Hunter exam has finally begun.
