Chapter 13 - Checkmate!

I walk out the door, smiling as the chilly wind bites at my face. I look up at the blank sky, covered with dark clouds. There's no single star in the sky, or moon, it's blank.

"Today was fun." A deep voice says and I smile wider.

"Well you sir only had fun because I was there." I say and he laughs, shaking his head.

"Only you, April, only you. I'll talk to you when I get home?" He asks, moving closer to me. I nod, watching as he shoves his hands into his pocket like a typical boy.

"Yes, I'll make sure to tell all other April's that I'm the one you're calling this night, Mr. Henderson." I tease and he chuckles before looking up, furrowing his brows. I turn around, and see all of them pressing their faces against the windows of the house, even Chase.

I roll my eyes and turn back to Austin, finding him watching me. He's been doing that a lot lately, watching me. It's starting to creep me out.

"What?" I ask with a small laugh, eyeing him up. He suddenly raises his hand, holding his pointer finger out in front of me.

I stare at it weirdly and look back to his eyes, raising a single brow. He gestures for me to go ahead and I slowly raise my hand, stretching out my pointer finger and bump it with his.

His face breaks into a smile and he winks at me, walking up to his car.

"Goodbye April, Temi, Lola, May, June, Macy, Adam, Storm, Chase and you too Mia." He says, looking at them. They frantically wave back and he shakes his head, getting into his car. He starts the engine and drives off, but not before waving me off.

I scoff and turn to go inside the house, catching as the guys rush back as if I never knew they were watching me.

I push open the door and see them, casually staring or flipping through upside-down magazines. Mia's phone is even upside-down, how does she not know that.

I sigh and walk into the kitchen, grabbing a glass and filling it with apple juice. I walk back into the living room space and they all start looking at me slowly, a nervous smile creeping at the edges of their lips.

I roll my eyes and grab my phone from the table. "If y'all are looking for me, I'm on the patio." I say and they all nod, still looking at me with those creepy grins. I walk up the stairs and enter my room, grabbing my laptop.

I walk to the patio, sitting on one of the chairs. I open my laptop and log into my Netflix,  searching for some new movies. My phone pings and I roll my eyes, grabbing it to check for whatever message had come in.

Hakim: Tell my brother to pick up his damn phone!

"Storm Perkins! Pick up your damn phone and tell your brother to stop texting me! I'm trying to have a me time!" I yell and hear a smash.

Lord, I'll kill someone if they destroy my house.

I wake up to the sun streaming into my room, the light from the lights I had forgotten to turn off last night blinding me as I try to open my eyes. I let out a yawn and stretch, almost knocking over my bedside lamp in the process. I cover my mouth when I see Temi sleeping in the bed beside me.

I quickly wipe my eyes and blink furiously, trying to remember when she had gotten into bed with me. She rolls over, muttering something in her sleep and I roll my eyes, throwing my legs over the bed and into my slippers. I walk into the bathroom and check my face. When I don't find anything that would give Temi a heart attack, I grab my toothbrush and slap on some toothpaste, sticking it into mouth.

I scrub and spit out the, whatever it is called and rinse my mouth. I don't like the mouthwash, I tend to swallow it sometimes when I'm still a little sleepy.

I walk out of the bathroom and see Temi currently occupying the whole bed, her legs sprawled over where I had been before and her head at the foot of the bed. How she turned so fast, I don't know. I flip off the lights and shake my head.

I walk out of my room and down the stairs to the kitchen. I hear shuffling from the kitchen and the smell of toast and eggs reach my nostrils.

"Good morning darling, why don't you ditch your girlfriend and run away with me, elope." I say to Storm as a bright smile crosses my face at the two plates he had set on the kitchen island. He looks up to me, amusement clear in his eyes.

"How about you elope with your own pan, go cook your breakfast yourself, daughter of a chef." I hear a voice say and my smile slips off as I come to face Lola. She's holding a glass of orange juice in her hand, staring at me with a raised brow and a hand on her hip.

"Good morning to you too." I grumble and walk to the fridge, walking between Storm and Lola to get milk carton.

I should really cut down on the milk, or I'll turn out to be a balloon.

I hear giggling and a few kissy sounds and groan. "Ugh, guys, get a room!" I complain and pause.

"No! On second thought, don't get a room! I'll leave instead." I say and hear Storm's chuckles. I drop the carton of milk and walk out, twisting my face into a scowl. Chase's face comes into view and he frowns at me.

"Why do you look like someone interrupted your breakfast?" He asks and I roll my eyes.

"I didn't even get to have the breakfast, and try not to puke if you see Lola and Storm." I warn and walk back up the stairs. Macy and Adam come out of Temi's room and I nearly shriek at the sight of Macy's hair. She still looks half asleep and I know she's going to get coffee to get her to function. Adam smiles at her as she almost slams into the wall, guiding her down the stairs.

My chest warms at the sight and I nearly cradle my hands to my chest, fake crying at their cuteness.

THEY ARE SO CUTE!

When they disappear from my line of view, I walk back into my room and hop into the bathroom.

"Alright people, we are here!" I say and park the car. They let out an exhausted yay and I roll my eyes.

"Do you want food or not?" I ask and they all start whooping, flying out of the car. I let out a sigh and come out of the car, locking it and following them into the restaurant.

We're here at a local restaurant that Adam was craving so dearly for. It was a long drive. But it's where we used to come every Saturday in the summer before he left California. Good days.

He goes to order while we take a seat, Temi and Storm bickering back and forth on which bubblegum flavor is better.

"Do you think they'll ever settle? Because they seem pretty determined about their choices." Lola mutters to me and I nod, still watching as Temi nearly stands up.

"Oh please you both know that Blueberry is the best, now shut it, before I shut you down." Macy glares and they both look at each other before nodding.

"Yeah, blueberry is actually better." They agree and my jaw falls open as I stare at the two of them, laughing at something outside the restaurant. Adam walks back to us, holding up bags filled with our food. He hands me my bag and I smile, opening it and bringing out my burger.

The noise of our table and people in the small restaurant cause me to smile. Well until Adam accidentally spills ketchup on me. I glare at him and he smiles sheepishly.

I scowl and stand up, walking over to one of the staff. "Hola. ¿Dónde está el baño?" I ask and the waitress looks up at me. She points to a corner and I smile at her.

"¡Gracias!" I turn and walk until I reach the bathrooms. When I wall in, I see some lady crying and my brows shoot up. I almost walk up to her but stop when I see that she's crying over a broken nail.

Hmph. Pathetic!

I reach the sinks and run the water on my fingers, cleaning off the ketchup stain from my dress. When I'm satisfied that the stain is gone enough to not look as much of a stain, I wall out of the bathroom, leaving the woman to hysterically sob as if her life depends on it.

When I get back to our table, I see Chase about to take a bite out of my burger and I nearly throw a coke at him.

"You! What are you doing?" I ask and stomp over to him. He smiles sheepishly at me and drops my burger, going back to his drink. I take a seat and watch as Adam and Storm talk about something no one will ever understand. Temi is on her phone and Lola and Macy are having a burger eating contest.

It's just like with Ethan and Kira. Those twins are something else.

The door opens and the breeze from outside hits me, I look up and see a woman walking in with a little girl, probably her daughter.

I look back to my food just as she closes the door. I take a bite of my cheeseburger, closing my eyes at the taste. "Where's uncle Luke?" I hear a little voice ask and I open my eyes, taking in the girls dark curls tumbling down her dark skin. She looks like her mother, only a little lighter in her skin tone.

"Uncle Luke is here!" A familiar voice responds just as the doors open. I look up, my jaw still moving as I patiently wait for the said guy to make an appearance.

"Hey, what are you looking at?" Lola says just as black hair and striking blue eyes come into view, smiling widely at the little girl. I nearly choke on my burger, my eyes widening as I stare at Austin as he picks up the little girl.

He kisses her cheek and the woman rolls her eyes, folding her arms but trying to hide the smile on her face. Austin puts her down and ruffles the womans hair. I feel someone's fingertip under my jaw and slowly push my jaw up and close. I roll my eyes and smack the hand away.

"Isn't that Austin?" I hear Chase's voice and I nod, finishing my burger and dusting my hands. Austin goes to order the food and the woman and her daughter take the table beside us.

Talk about being awkward!

Austin comes back and his eyes flit across the room before landing on our table. Specifically on me.

Uh-oh.

His smile drags even wider across his face and he sits with them, looking at me with amusement bright in his eyes.

I roll my eyes and grab Chase's bottle of Fanta he's about to drink it and drink it instead, making sure to not look at Austin.

I hear his deep chuckles and groan, shoving the cap onto the bottle and handing it back to Chase.

I catch June's teasing eyes and glare at her, crossing my arms and looking put the window.

Annoying humans!

"Checkmate!" I yell, jumping out of my seat and throwing my hands in the air, jumping on the couch and whooping loudly. A cough interrupts me and I stop my victory dance that looks more like a worm trying to shimmy.

"April, this is scrabble, you can't checkmate." Storm says and I blink. My hands slowly come down and I turn to him, clearing my throat.

"So, you're telling me that the first time I think that I win, I'm not even playing the game I think I'm playing?" I ask and they all shrug.

"Yeah, pretty much." May says softly and I groan, grabbing a pillow and squeezing it hard before hitting the couch with it.

"That's stage one of grief, anger, we should be expecting denial next." I hear Adam whisper and I glare at him, stomping up the stairs.

I land flat on my bed and my phone pings, I raise my head from the fluffy green pillow and grab my phone from the table. It's a text from mom.

Mom: Call me now.

No surprise there.

I dial her number and press the phone against my ear.

"Hey mom."
