Chapter 2 - When Fate Likes To Tease

Ten years later...

Toronto, CA

Aiden looked up to the tall man beside him, his Uncle Flynn who also happened to be his math teacher. The boy was holding onto his large hand as they waited for his mother to come out of the office, while the other clutched on a piece of paper that he folded in half as to imitate a card.

Today was mother's day, and he asked his uncle to come with him so he could personally hand over his mother's day gift.

Flynn Wilson looked down at his godson, Aiden, who stood at hip height with luscious black hair, and he couldn't help but smile when he remembered how this cheeky boy ran to him after school as he showcased his drawing with sparkly eyes.

Flynn has known Izzy since their college years and he treated Aiden like his own son the moment she conceived. He couldn't help but feel like Aiden should grow up with a father figure so he stuck around. And it seemed like Izzy didn't mind.

He was actually happy that Izzy decided to enrol him to the same elementary school that he was teaching at-- this way, he could keep his eye on him when Izzy wasn't around.

Flynn ran his fingers through his brunette hair then looked at his watch.

6:05 PM.

He and Aiden had been waiting outside for the past half hour, and Izzy should've been done by now.

"Give me one sec, bud. I'm gonna call your mom."

He quickly let go of Aiden's hand as to grab his phone from his back pocket.

A cool breeze washed over where they were standing and the piece of paper Aiden has been holding on to flew with the gush of wind and landed on the ground few feet away from where they stood.

Instinctively, the boy hurried towards the flimsy paper, but before he could pick it up, a person stepped on it.

"AH! MY DRAWING!" Aiden yelled and this caught the attention of the towering man in a sleek navy blue suit.

Nathaniel Becker paused at the sound of a teeny disgruntled voice, and when he looked beneath his red-bottom leather shoes, he looked like he stepped on a piece of drawing.

His gaze swayed to the source of the voice and all he could see from his angle was the boy's head and its shiny black hair.

Nathan knelt down to pick up the paper with a drawing of a green grass, a house atop a hill and a drawing of a woman who was holding a little boy be her side. On top of wrote "Best Mom Ever!" with an arrow pointing at the woman and labelled her as "mommy" and the other arrow pointed at the smaller figure.

"Aiden," Nathen murmured to himself.

He turned to the boy whose smile was upside down. Who would blame him? Nathan practically ruined his hard work. Nathan dusted off the piece of paper though there were some visible shoe markings left at a corner.

"I didn't mean to step on your drawing, buddy. I'm very sorry," he told the boy which finally made him glanced up to meet Nathan's eyes, finally, and then Aiden shrugged.

"It's okay, it was an accident." Aiden took the paper from the man's hand when he saw how apologetic he was.

"Your drawing is amazing. I'm sure your mom will love it."

Aiden's face brightened up like the break of dawn. Then a bizarre feeling of familiarity washed over Nathan. It felt like he was looking at a reflection-- maybe it was the hazel eyes and the hair-- but it was definitely not him.

He couldn't put a finger on it, so decided to brush it off.

"Aiden!" Nathan heard someone call the little boy and he was met with another man who was not much taller than him and had an earnest look in his eyes. Must be his father, he thought to himself, though he couldn't see the resemblance. But at this day and age, one couldn't easily assume.

Nathan picked himself up as to face the kid's father.

"I apologize, I think I ruined his drawing. If there's anything I can do to compensate..."

Flynn was taken aback when the man was about to pick up something from his pocket.

"Please, don't worry about it. Knowing this kid, he must've forgiven you right away. Right, bud?" Flynn looked at the boy who was smiling back at him and nodded in reply. He placed his hand over his head and playfully mussed the boy's hair. "Your mom's on her way down, she won't be long."

The boy did a little hop as he couldn't contain his excitement anymore. And this made Nathan crack a smile.

At the corner of his eye, Nathan saw the parking attendant approaching his way. Nathan quickly bid goodbye to a the little boy and his father and hopped on his car as soon as the attendant delivered the keys to him.

He started his car and drove a block until he reached a stop. His eyes turned to his right side mirror where he caught a sight of a happy family reunion. A woman exited the same building he just walked out of and Aiden handed over the card and she bent on one knee to embrace her son.

The lights turned green and his foot stepped on the gas, and when he glanced at his rear and side view mirror, the boy and his family was nowhere in sight.
