Chapter 36 - Genji

Junpei's team have checked and surrounded the perimeter. One covered the front and another covered back while Junpei stood behind a tree on the west side of the house. The east side didn't have a window but this one did.

A shrill scream emanated from the house. Clattering and booming footsteps could be heard. Junpei still wasn't used to this. How could he? He hasn't been useful in the raids but he was still involved.

Being a witness to a murder and not doing anything about it was a crime. Anxiety attacked him as he hopes that somehow the occupants would escape.

"Emi! Run!"

"But brother!"

Her big brother was pushing against a locked bedroom door upstairs.

"Go without me! Get help!"

Emi stood there unable to abandon her brother.

Boom Boom.

The door lock was already broken and was being rammed against from the other side.

"Goo!"

With that, her body snapped into action and she climbed over the balcony handrail.

"I'll come back with help! Wait for me brother!" She sobbed.

She landed but went down on all fours from the momentum.

'Hurry up, hurry up and run!' Junpei begged.

Junpei stepped out from the tree and she gasped. She turned back but saw an intruder come out from the backyard.

'Dammit!' Junpei cursed when he saw his teammate appear.

She ran and Junpei grabbed onto her.

"Let go of me!"

She started kicking him in the shins and tried to shake him off but his hands were iron claws. He saw his teammate staring at him from the side. He needed to kill her so that they wouldn't suspect him.

"Noo! Let go of her!" He cried.

Her big brother cried as he attempted to jump off the balcony but was pulled back by the guy who broke down the door.

"Brother!"

Junpei looked into her eyes. She didn't resemble his sister much, yet Hanae's face overlapped with hers. She was still a beloved sister of a brother who deeply cherished her.

Junpei trembled. He squeezed his eyes shut and gritted his teeth. He was torn between the need to kill her to selfishly protect his sister and to save the stranger out of guilt and innate justice.

"Please! Let go of me!" Seeing that Junpei was hesitating she desperately grabbed onto the only ray of hope she saw.

Junpei mustered all his strength and shoved her forward. She landed in the arms of a parasite who was approaching from the sliding glass doors behind her.

Snap!

The guy holding her twisted her neck beyond 90 degrees anti-clockwise. She fell to the ground with her eyes open, seemingly staring at Junpei.

Junpei turned his head to look away.

"Thank you." The teammate he assisted said.

"No need," Junpei replied.

The cleanup began. Junpei didn't move from the spot. He clutched onto the rainbow on his left breast and then with a quiver, he unpinned it and tuck it in his pants pocket.

"What are you doing?"

He ignored his father as he took the rifle on display in the living room. His father approached him only to be bashed in the head when he turned around.

"Ahhh!" His mother shrieked

Two of his friends pushed his mother to her knees.

Glok

He did an axe chop on her head with the butt of the rifle. The three turned around to see a 90-year-old Grandpa standing frozen in shock. They watched him reach for a cereal box and thought he had lost his mind. He pulled out a hidden New Mambu M60 revolver from the cereal box.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three parasites hit the floor. One of them was shot in the head. Two of them were shot hastily before they broke out from their stupor. Genji shot one that was still moving in the head.

His grandson who was laying still a moment ago suddenly jumped at him.

Bang!

He blew his grandson's head without hesitation. He was shocked that he had gone insane and killed his parents but he connected the dots.

Genji's Howa Type 64 battle rifle and Howa type 89 assault rifle had disappeared from its hiding spot. He had suspected that he and his friends were trying to get in with the Yakuza and offered or sold it to them.

He was greatly disappointed in his grandson and regret not disciplining him but he had listened to his daughter and left it in their hands. They had grown up in a modern society that has outreached Genji.

He saw shadows outside the opened front door and pointed his revolver at them.

Click

He had run out of bullets but they had already run to cover. He took out a speed reloader from the cereal box and reloaded his revolver. Then he went to lock the door. He checked the backdoor as well.

He went upstairs and saw an intruder opening the sliding door to the balcony.

Bang!

He aimed for the head but hit the throat. The intruder staggered backwards and fell over the railing. Genji had never ceased practising his aim since world war II ended in 1945 but he couldn't stop the advance of age.

He peered over the balcony after grabbing a torch. He shined at the spot where the attacker fell but he had disappeared.

He was startled. For someone to get up from a fall with a wound like that must have been trained. Was he dealing with a guerilla group?

'Foreign black ops?' He thought.

Genji shuddered. He was both thrilled and terrified. He hadn't got any action during WWII since they surrendered the same year when he was conscripted at age 15.

He left the torch pointing outwards from the room on the table to mislead them and crouched over an electrical outlet. He plucked it out and took out two 5-round Arisaka Type 99 stripper clips and a 30-round box magazine. The electrical outlet never worked for over a decade because it was fake!

He then went downstairs to pick up the type 5 rifle from his grandson's dead hands. The rifle was a copy of the American semi-automatic M1 Garand produced during WW2. However, only a few hundred were made and none of them was used in combat. While most of them were scrapped, he was given a chance to secretly keep them as a sign of respect.

After grabbing the rifle, he immediately went over to his wall clock safe and opened it up to reveal a type 100 submachine hanging from a hook.
