I have arrived in A city. Before I decided to come here, of course I have landed and secured a job here. Nothing fancy, just a regular office job since my last job was also an office job. After I arrived, I immediately hailed a taxi and went straight to the apartment that I've rented. I spent the rest of the day cleaning the apartment and organizing my stuff. I didn't get to finished it though, because it was already 9 pm and I was dead tired. Finally I took a bath and fell asleep.
The next day, is my first day at the office. I immediately got up and after ironing my clothes a bit, I take a bath and get ready. A city is way bigger than the city I used to live in as a child. It took 1 hour in total to get to my workplace from my apartment. When I arrived, I was led to the account department where I will work.
"This is your desk and you have 7 more team mates and a manager. You should probably report to your manager later. The pantry is there, and the bathroom is over there just around the corner. Maybe you can ask your team mates later about other trivial things. Any questions?" I shake my head and thanked the guy who led me here, his name is Charles by the way.
"Oh! Hi there newbie" a lady came up to me and sit beside my desk. "Hi. I am Rani, I just moved here" I said introducing myself and offering my hand. "Grace Consuelo Daphne Burton" she said shaking my hand "call me Coco" I smiled at her. And then the desks are starting to be occupied by my co-workers.
The office hour just started and now I'm on my way to report to my manager. Knock knock. "Yes, enter" said a voice inside the room.
"Excuse me sir. My name is Rani the new recruit" I said to the manager. According to the name on his desk, his name is Dean Lata. He looks like in his 40s.
"Oh, hi Rani. Ok, I believe you've received your job description?" I nod at that. "For your info, I am called Mr. Lata and I am the accounting team leader or the manager. Now, come with me I will introduce you to your coworkers" and then I followed him out of his room and he addressed me in front of my coworkers.
"Everyone listen up." And immediately everybody stopped what they're doing and looked up to Mr. Lata's direction, "This is our new team mate, her name is Rani. Rani, these are your team mates. We've got Rocco, Clinton, Irma, Ola, Shannon, Gabriel, and Coco." Mr. Lata said while pointing each person, "You can familiarize yourself with them later. But now, let's get to work everybody! Oh by the way if you have questions you can ask Coco. She's the one beside your desk" and then Mr. Lata went back to his room. "Thank you sir!"
I started my day by tidying up my desk and immediately someone, that I believed was called Irma, came to me and gave me some workloads. Coco was a little upset because she thought I should've taken it easy since it was my first day. I didn't mind though, my last job was similar to this.
I did my task, typing and balancing accounts and then it was time for lunch break. Coco offered to have lunch together, which I agreed because I know very little about this city. Coco, Irma, Clinton and me went to a small restaurant nearby to have lunch. Coco said it was the best restaurant in the area.
"So, Rani tell me where are you from?" Irma asked me. "Oh, I was originally from B city, but I moved abroad for a few years, and then I just recently moved here"
"Great! Let's have a team dinner and welcoming party tonight" Coco nudged my shoulder and smiled. It was really not my place to refuse so I just stayed silent and smiled. We talked a little bit more, and getting to know each other more. I now know a few things about them, Clinton is a very neat guy. He wore glasses, well ironed shirt and pants, he wore his tie very neatly, and he didn't talk much.
Irma is the same age as me, but she has a husband and a daughter. I was a little surprised because her daughter is 6, which means she got married in college. Meanwhile Coco is a 30-something single mother with a son.
After lunch, we got back to the office together. The lunch time is not over yet but most of the workers are already back. So, I went to the nearby departments and introduce myself as the newbie. When I came to marketing department, there was only 4 people there. "Hello everyone, my name is Rani. The new employee of account department". Everyone looked up and say 'hi, nice to meet you'.
One of the marketing department was sleeping on his chair, and his team mates saw my surprised look and said, "Just ignore him. He didn't sleep for 2 days straight". I just nod and smile. After that, I went back to my desk.
The rest of the day I tried to finish my workload. Coco said I work really fast. Well, I have to admit, in my last job I tried to work as fast as possible because I didn't want to do overtime and it became a habit.
Finally, it's 4.30 pm. My first day is finished. Earlier at lunch, Coco suggested that we have a team dinner. And that's what we will do. After work, we all went to a restaurant and have dinner together and I also try to familiarize myself with the rest of the team. And of course, at the end of the dinner I kind of understand my team mates temperaments.
