Chapter 1 - Cracking Icicles Off Rooftops

"Amelia, wake up, it's time for your morning meal." I dreaded those words. More than anything. I didn't want to wake up. I wanted to stay asleep forever. I lifted my head as best as I could to face the person that dare wake me up from my slumber. It was Madam Giselle, master of this terrible place. Though I feared her, I couldn't help but notice how pretty she really was. Amber hair tied back and her beautiful dusty emerald eyes that seemed to glitter off of the bit of light that shown through my window. Before I could croak some sort of response, she clattered away in her big black shoes. So loud, so noisy. It really gave me a headache. I hated every morning of waking up from my cot of rags and dirty cobble floor. The rotted wooden walls reeked such a pungent smell. Worse than Lady Camel's bean sprout soup. And that says a lot. I stepped off of my bed, which seemed to be more worn out than ever. Putting one foot in front of the other seemed like the hardest thing to do. Each step sent a shock of pain down my spine. It didn't help that I lost my shoes in the lake last month, so going barefoot around the dirty sharp cobble was my only choice.

I tried to walk as slow as possible, so maybe I could skip mealtime. It was too loud anyway. Everybody is too noisy. It makes my head ache to the point where I want to collapse. I hate people. But I know the consequences of not being present for meal time. I didn't want to get hung to the wall and get pulverized by the other children anyway. The splinters from the old wooden tables don't bother me anymore. Lil Sally still manages to bawl her eyes out every time the wood grazed her arm the wrong way. What a pathetic little child. She was admitted here not too long ago, I honestly pity her for what she has to endure. But I have nor the time or patience to feel sorry for another. The rat stew that seemed to be an odd green color, smelt of rotten socks and dead rats. No way would I ever even put this in my mouth. Going hungry was a better choice.

Mealtime is finally over, what a pain it was. Yet I have to deal with this for another 5 years. What did I ever do to end up in such a place anyway.

A gush of wind seemed to blow out of one of the shattered windows. I look out to see all the trees leaves fading. That only meant one thing. Winter was coming. I hated Winter. It's cold, it's unbearable and miserable. I still remember all those times Roger pushed me out of the building to sit in the bitter cold for his own amusement. I hate that guy, I want him gone. He is a disgusting person. I heard a rumor once that he caused one of the children to die from his little antics. Pathetic, so pathetic. Somebody would really do all of that to get the nonexistent approval from his nonexistent father? I had to chuckle at that one. It was quite funny nonetheless. Maybe I should use that against him someday, it would be fun to see his face all jumbled up and full of fury.

A loud ringing sound pierced my ears. It was the bell I look forward to everyday. That bell signaled all of the faculty members to go for break. Which gives me the chance to sneak out once again. I can't wait to visit the creek again. The creek of Midnight Fields. My sanctuary, the place where I have peace, where I can back away from my troubles and reality.

Drifting my thickest rags over my shoulders like a cape, I snaked out the cracked window carefully and made a run for it.
