Crash looks thoughtful, so I wait. "But I love my life," he finally continues. "Especially the last year. I've been working on something I wanted to do. I didn't have to put it through executives or whatever. I could write what I wanted to write. I could play how I wanted to play. It was pretty awesome."
"I loved the songs, Crash," I said, realizing I hadn't told him. "That whole show—you on the piano. I loved it. I never would have thought…but it almost seemed more you."
He whips his head around then, looking at me, measuring me, I think, to see if I'm serious. "I felt the same way," he says in a small voice. "I can't believe you… I mean, everyone's been telling me I'm crazy."
I shake my head. "I love your rock stuff. I mean, I really do. But when you played that piano and it was just your voice…" I blow out a breath. "It took my breath away."
