Crash - A Year Ago
Seeing Kelly had been like seeing water in the desert. And I was the stupid fool, so deep in a bottle at the time, that I'd ruined everything. I'd been trying to reach her for months, certain if I just kept calling, she'd give in. I wasn't going to make the mistake I'd made last time of leaving her alone, thinking things that weren't true. This time I was determined to keep talking until she talked back.
When Holly finally called—six months after Kelly disappeared that night—I was ecstatic. And apparently, completely unrealistic about it. Merv had tried to talk me out of meeting her that way—even gotten Rod on the phone. But we were in Las Vegas for meetings and I had a free day even though Rod didn't. So I was on my own and already deep into a bottle of scotch.
