Chapter 12 - Chasing Hope: Unspoken Bonds in the Search for Helix

Rossy stood up from her seat, her eyes flashing with determination, her fists clenched as she prepared herself to take action.

She turned to Dr. Olive, who had been sitting quietly beside her as if waiting for her next words. "You are right, Olive. Let's find her. And I know exactly the person who will help us in this," Rossy said, her voice full of resolve.

Olive's eyes widened in shock at her sudden transformation. The calm and fragile Rossy, the one he had always known as a soft, innocent girl, had disappeared. In her place stood someone fierce, someone whose determination was almost terrifying. Her demeanor was no longer that of a delicate flower but that of a warrior, ready to fight against all odds.

Dr. Olive stood frozen, unable to comprehend what was happening. His heart trembled as he watched Rossy walk past him, her confidence exuding from every step. It was as though she had shed her old self and embraced something new, something far stronger and unyielding.

He was taken aback, unable to move for a moment. He knew Rossy, had watched her grow, and had always been the one to protect her. But now, he realized that she didn't need protection anymore—she had become someone entirely different. This fierce, determined woman was a far cry from the fragile girl he had once known. It terrified him, not because she had changed, but because he feared what this new version of her was capable of doing.

He knew better than anyone how fragile Rossy could be inside. She had always worn her heart on her sleeve, vulnerable and open. He had seen her broken before, felt her pain, and tried his best to mend her wounds. But now, this transformation into someone so hardened, so determined to find Helix, was something he couldn't quite handle.

His thoughts raced back to the dark past he had buried deep within him. He had endured pain—unimaginable pain—watching his love, the woman he had cherished, fall apart. He knew the agony of loss like no one else. And now, with Rossy standing before him, so determined and unyielding, he couldn't help but feel a deep fear. He had always known how deeply she cared for Helix, but now, with everything at stake, he wasn't sure if he could protect her from the darkness she was about to face.

She had become his life, his love, the reason he had endured the hardest days of his life. But watching her like this, so determined and fierce, made him feel powerless. He could see the strength in her eyes, but it only made him worry more. What would become of her if they couldn't find Helix? What if they were too late?

For a brief moment, Olive stood paralyzed by his fears and concerns. Then, as if snapping out of a trance, he quickly ran after her. "Rossy, you want to go to him for help?" he asked, his voice a mixture of disbelief and concern.

Rossy didn't even pause in her tracks. She didn't look back at him but replied in a voice laced with irony, "Why not? It's his turn to pay back, to show us how worthy he is of being a part of our lives again."

Olive's chest tightened, his breath catching in his throat. "But how can you even consider that?" he exclaimed, his voice rising in frustration. "Don't forget, Helix was the one who kept him away from us. And how can you forget that he would burn this whole city down if he knew what happened here?" His words came out in a rush, his anxiety evident in every syllable. He knew that if they went to this person for help, they might be playing right into the hands of someone dangerous, someone capable of destroying everything.

Rossy turned sharply to face him then, her eyes blazing with a fire he had never seen before. "I don't care anymore," she said, her voice steady, her determination unwavering. "This is a life-or-death situation. Helix's life is at stake, and I trust my instincts. I know she's not dead. I have to believe that."

Dr. Olive felt his heart pound in his chest as he realized how far Rossy was willing to go. His protective instincts flared, but he knew that, for Rossy, this was no longer just about Helix—it was about something deeper, something personal. He didn't know if he could stop her, but he couldn't let her face this alone.

At Beau House, Jacob sat quietly at the coffee table, a plate of food in front of him, but his mind was elsewhere. His eyes were fixed on Helix, who lay unconscious on the bed, and every moment he spent staring at her felt like an eternity. He couldn't shake the image of her, so fragile and vulnerable, lying there. He wanted so badly for her to wake up, for her to smile at him with that infectious grin that always made his heart skip a beat.

Dr. Melvin sat beside him, eating in silence, but his gaze was also fixed on Jacob. He saw the pain in his friend's eyes and understood that Jacob was struggling with something far deeper than just worry. He was carrying a weight that seemed almost unbearable.

The silence between them was thick, filled with the unspoken emotions they both carried. Suddenly, a piercing scream cut through the air—Helix, in a nightmare, let out a blood-curdling scream that sent Jacob jumping to his feet. He dropped his plate in shock, and without a second thought, he rushed to her side.

Helix's body trembled as she clutched at the sheets, her eyes tightly shut, her face twisted in fear. Jacob gently cradled her head in his arms, his heart breaking at the sight of her in such distress. He could feel the heat of her tears as they fell onto his shirt, and it tore at him.

He whispered to her, his voice calm and reassuring, "I'm here. Don't worry. I won't leave you."

Her body relaxed slightly at the sound of his voice, and she squeezed his waist tightly, as though holding on to him for dear life. "Promise... you won't leave me?" she whispered, her voice shaky and weak.

Jacob didn't understand fully what she was saying in her semi-conscious state, but the fear in her words struck him. He nodded, brushing the hair from her forehead. "I promise. I won't leave you."

Dr. Melvin, who had been observing from a distance, saw the intensity of their connection. He could tell that Helix was no longer in immediate danger, but he also knew that the situation was far from over. He decided to give them some space, recognizing that what Jacob and Helix needed now was time to process everything together.

Helix's grip on Jacob tightened, and as she continued to sleep, a small smile spread across her face. Jacob's heart swelled at the sight. He kissed her forehead gently and whispered, "Yes, my love," before the words even fully formed in his mind.

He didn't know why he had said it, but it felt right. It felt like the truth. Helix had unknowingly become his heart's anchor, the person who had rooted him in a way no one else ever had.

Jacob gently tucked her into the bed, pulling the covers up around her as he stood up. His mind raced with thoughts he couldn't quite make sense of. As he quietly left the room, he took one last look at her sleeping form and closed the door softly behind him.

Downstairs, Dr. Melvin waited for him, sitting on the couch in the living room. "Come, sit," Melvin said, gesturing for Jacob to join him. "We need to talk."

Jacob, still lost in his thoughts, walked over and sat down, his heart heavy with a weight he couldn't yet understand. He knew something had changed between him and Helix, but he wasn't sure what. One thing was certain, though: he would never leave her.
