Chapter 9 - Burning change

The rabbit was eaten between the two people.

Night's face was full of comfort and satisfaction.

Edward was quite confident that this rabbit meat barbecue as definitely the first feast for the savage girl Night.

"Night, we don't need fire now, we can put it out, come, I will teach you."

He grabbed a handful of sand, sprinkled it on the fire, and smiled at the Night.

"You come and try too!"

There was a smile on the face of Night. Since the beginning of the barbecue, she had been around the fire for a while and found that the fire was really not that terrible. How could something be terrible if it allowed her to eat something this delicious?

She learned watching Edward perform, and took sand from the cracks in the cobblestones on the ground and sprinkled it on the fire. With the lack of oxygen, the fire would soon extinguish.

"Well, you can now easily handle fire if you ever have the need for."

Edward stood up, wrapped the rabbit skin around his waist.

'Finally, there is something to cover my young brother. It's not like I hated it or it was uncomfortable, in fact, I kinda enjoyed the openness of being nearly naked. But even then, a younger brother is a man's most delicate organ, I need soft things to protect it.'

Night played with the fire for some time before completely extinguishing the fire. It seemed Night had surrendered to the wrath of the gods or simply gotten over her fear of wrath. Her eyes held reverence for Edward.

"Light, I will take you back to the tribe! If you are driven out from the tribe, then I am willing to leave the tribe along with you!" she said firmly.

Edward was moved but for this era, it was natural to follow someone who could provide food. Edward had proven himself as not just a provider of food but a controller of fire.

"Ha ha ha ha... I am so happy!" He laughed excitedly, he could not restrain his inner excitement, grabbed Night, and kissed her face.

Finally, he has a place to live now!

A feeling of electric shock, numbness, and crispness spread throughout his body. The rabbit skin wrapped around his waist lifted up as his younger brother offered his salute towards Edward.

Edward quickly came back to his senses and released Night.

There was a blush on Night's face as her body shuddered slightly when Edward had held her and kissed her face. Her eyes shone with a strange light as her face broke out in a shy expression. It was obvious by now that Night had felt his younger brother saluting.

In the wild era when humanity had not yet entered the age of civilization, kissing, embracing, and the feeling someone's younger brother was the key physical interactions that meant only one thing for a prehistoric woman, that was to reproduce with the male mate. Something vastly different from modern times where courtship included expensive gifts and even more expensive dates.

Not all mating was done during this era through a club to the head and dragging someone.

"Light, why are you here? Which tribe are you from?" she asked curiously.

"My tribe ... is too far away from here, I can't go back." He sat down with her again.

"If I take you back, you... can you teach the tribe the way of catching rabbits and fire?" She raised up her eyebrows and looked very serious.

"How many people are there in your tribe?" he asked.

"….."

Only silence answered him back. Surprised, he looked towards Night who had her brows creased while her dark eyes constantly looked around as if in deep thought.

Realizing something, Edward facepalmed.

'She may not even have the concept of numbers. How the hell would she even answer me then? This will make things very difficult.'

It was just at that moment that a flock of birds flew above them, apparently disturbed by something far away. Night turned to look towards the sky, still deep in thought before finally speaking out:

"As much as them…."

Edward followed her gaze and looked up towards the flock of birds. He estimated it to be more than 30.

A tribe of more than 30 people had no problem with their own foothold. As long as they had a place to live then they could expand. As long as new people joined, Edward had a chance to develop them. People and time could even turn it into a strong civilization in the shortest time. That was the only way to survive in this era, to be at the top of the food chain. Humans were near the bottom of this pyramid at the moment.

'Numbers…..quantity. I need quantity. A lot of things can be done faster if I have the manpower.'

From the moment when he burned that fire, something had changed inside Night.
