Chapter 23 - Changes of Plans

QuickShot:

My eyes snap open when I hear the OutPost's doors slide open. Immediately, I reach for my bow and an arrow and aim at the door.

"Hey, hey, hey," JumpStart says, stepping back and holding up his hands. "Peace. We come in peace. Uhh, I don't have anything for a peace offering. Do you guys have something?"

Ms. Justice searches her pockets for a while and pulls out a chocolate bar.

"I have this," Justice answers, turning from JumpStart to me. "Do you want it?"

"I'm fine," I say, lowering my bow. "What are you guys doing back here? No offense or anything, but I doubt it's a victory."

"You're right," SpeedBlade says, walking in and sitting down. "It's not a victory. It's a retreat."

"Well, I don't know if I'd use that word exactly," Ms. Justice interrupts, joining SpeedBlade and sitting down too.

"What do you mean," I ask.

"For some reason," Ms. Justice says, making circles with her hand. "Silent, the guy in the giant metal suit who was kicking our butts, just walked away."

"He walked away," I repeat. "What do you mean by that?"

"She means what she said," JumpStart answers. "Silent just walk away. He was one shot from destroying the three of us, but instead of taking the shot, he just walked away. He turned and left us alone."

"It doesn't make any sense," I say. "If what all of you said is true, if he was one blast from destroying the three of you, then why would he walk away?"

"I don't know," SpeedBlade answers, "But I do know this. We can't defeat Silent with any of our usual attacks. That armor of his was able to counter JumpStart's batons and even my speed."

"So if we can't fight with our weapons or skills," JumpStart starts, looking from head to head, "Then how are we going to fight? Does anyone have a plan? Or even an idea?"

Unfortunately, none of us could answer JumpStart. The only thing that answers JumpStart is the OutPost's alarm. The lights switch to red and the bells start to ring.

"What's going on," I ask, getting up from my seat. Still feeling a little tired, I have to use my bow as a crane and walk up to JumpStart. "JumpStart, what's going on?"

"It's Silent," JumpStart answers, turning back to face me. "He's attacking again. This time, it's a building."

"Silent is attacking a building," Ms. Justice asks, coming up from behind us. "What's the building?"

"It's the building where Dr. Kolohe Cho used to work," JumpStart says.

Silent:

"Come on," I say, grabbing at a panel and trying to pull it open. "Come on. Come on!"

Finally, prying the panel open, I throw it aside and look inside to see a bunch of wires. The opening is small so I can only reach in with one hand.

"What are you doing," Dr. Cho yells, her face appearing in front of mine. "Stop it immediately."

"Bite me," I shout, grabbing at many wires as I can and pulling them out, screaming only a little when a loose wire hits and electrocutes me. Dropping the wires, I look around but everything is still the same. Nothing happens. I'm still trapped within the Iron Fist armor.

"Did you really think a simple trick like that would be enough to stop the Iron Fist," Dr. Cho laughs.

As Dr. Cho laughs and I look around for more panels, I feel the world outside shaking. Looking past Dr. Cho's face, I peek outside and see the Iron Fist armor attacking a massive skyscraper. It fires the mini-rockets I used against SpeedBlade, and destroys a wall, exposing the people inside.

"What are you doing," I yell, looking at Dr. Cho's face. "What are you doing?"

"Do you recognize this place," Dr. Cho asks. "Do you?"

"Do I recognize this place? What?"

I repeat what Dr. Cho asked me and look at the building. Looking around, I see the building's logo and recognize it immediately.

"This is where you worked," I say, turning to the doctor. "This is Futuright."

It takes only a moment before I realize what Dr. Cho wants to do.

"You're here for revenge," I say, looking at Dr. Cho. "You're going to destroy Futuright."

"They destroyed my friends," Dr. Cho says. "The friends I made, the only friends I had, they destroyed all of them, and then they send me to IronWall Prison. No. I will make them regret all of their idiotic and foolish decision."

"You can't do this," I say.

"Why not? How is this any different from what you were going to do? Society betrays both of us, and now, now we're getting back at society."

"My plan never involves hurting innocent people. Only the people who truly deserve it."

"These people do deserve it," Dr. Cho yells. The next thing I hear is the sound of people screaming as Dr. Cho fires off more mini rockets. The Futuright building is smoking and the walls are starting to crumble.

"Come on," I think, "Come on. What can I do? What can I do?"

I look at all the torn wires on the floor.

"Dr. Cho said none of the wires I pulled will stop the Iron Fist armor. Maybe that's it. Maybe I just haven't pulled the right wires."

Looking at the opened panel, I reach in even further and grab as many wires as I can. As I pull, I hear wires breaking and snapping. The loose wires are shocking me but I bite my tongue and pull as many out as I can.

"What are you doing," Dr. Cho shouts as her face appears in front of me. "What do you think you are doing? Something is happening to the right arm of the Iron Fist armor. I can't seem to operate it anymore."

I ignore the yelling doctor and pull out the wires completely. Throwing them to the floor, I scream and look at my burnt hand.

"That was all for nothing," Dr. Cho says. "Even if the right arm is down, I still have control over the rest of the armor. Including the weapons."

Sucking in air through my teeth, I look at the monitor as it shows the left arm rising. I expect her to use the mini rockets launcher again but I was wrong. I was horribly wrong.

"The energy cannon. Dr. Cho, you can't. The energy cannon won't just destroy the building. It'll destroy everyone on the inside. That wasn't the plan."

"That wasn't your plan," Dr. Cho replies. "This had always been my plan."

I watch as energy build in the cannon and Dr. Cho aims it at the building. I can still see people inside. While most of them have fled, there are still a few insides, trying desperately to help others that have been buried.

My hand still sizzling, I shake it off and pull it back. About to reach in and pull out some more wires, I stop when I hear Dr. Cho screams. It wasn't her gloating but her begin taken by surprise. Looking out, I see the four OutCasts charging toward me.

"They sure took their time," I think as I reach in.
