Chapter 5 - The first ray

As the soft morning light crept into the dorm room, Jake stirred, shifting back to his human form. He opened his eyes to find Amara still asleep, her face peaceful yet shadowed by the remnants of sadness from the previous day. He remembered the sharp words of the girls and the heavy silence from Ms. Debra, who should have taken a stand but chose to look away.

With a firm resolve, Jake pushed himself off the bed, vowing that today would be different. No more hiding behind the walls of his past; he wouldn't let Amara face her struggles alone anymore. He needed not just to train harder, but also to build a space where she felt safe and valued, and to confront those who sought to belittle her.

After a quick breakfast, he returned to Amara's side, gently nudging her awake. "Hey, sleepyhead. We have some important things to discuss," he said with a warm smile.

Amara blinked a few times, confused, then sat up and rubbed her eyes. "What time is it? Did I oversleep?"

"Nope, you're right on time. But we need to plan our strategy for dealing with Maga and her friends," Jake replied, his eyes bright with determination.

Amara's face twisted in apprehension. "Do we have to? I just want to focus on our training and not think about them."

"Focusing on training is important, but so is standing up for yourself. You shouldn't have to just accept the bullying," Jake insisted. "You're stronger than you think, and I can help you see it."

After a moment of silence, Amara took a deep breath and nodded, feeling the weight of his conviction. "Okay. What do you have in mind?"

"Let's show them that we're not to be underestimated. We can train you to work on your bond with Jack. If you strengthen that connection, he'll be able to help you in ways you haven't tapped into yet," he proposed, a spark of excitement building in his chest.

"I thought about that too," Amara admitted, a hint of her usual spark returning. "Maybe if I train more, I can summon him in a different form or even improve how I control him."

"Exactly! And let's make sure to practice in front of as many people as possible. Let's give them something to talk about—something that flips the narrative," Jake encouraged, his eyes shining with enthusiasm.

As they prepared for their training session, the atmosphere shifted. Amara found herself buzzing with a sense of purpose she hadn't felt in days. Together, they made their way to the training hall, Amara holding her head high, fueled by a newfound resilience.

The training hall was wide and filled with various stations for practicing spells and summoning. They set up in the far corner, and Jake guided Amara through warm-up exercises, encouraging her to visualize Jack while focusing her energy.

"Remember, it's about connection. Feel him with you, feel him as part of you," Jake instructed, his voice steady and calming as she closed her eyes.

Amara concentrated, picturing Jack in her mind. Within moments, a soft glow enveloped her as Jack materialized at her side, but this time with a slight adjustment—longer ears, leaner limbs, a hint of a mischievous glint in his eye, resembling a more agile feline.

Jake's face lit up. "There! You did it! You're getting better at this!"

Encouraged by Jake's enthusiasm, Amara beamed. She let Jack leap gracefully around her, practicing commands and refining their communication. The more they trained, the more confidence she found, pushing aside the remnants of doubt that had clung to her.

As the lesson progressed, a few students began to wander over, intrigued by the display. Jake gave them a nod, welcoming their attention. Amara felt her heart race with a mix of excitement and nerves; this was her chance.

"Keep going, Amara!" Jake cheered, and she could feel his energy lending her strength.

With the crowd gathering, Amara and Jack put on a show that involved leaps, spins, and playful interactions. Laughter and cheers from their peers buffered the atmosphere, changing the tide from the negativity that had previously loomed over them.

As they finished their session amidst applause, Amara couldn't help but smile. Even Ms. Debra stood with a slight smile on her face, finally recognizing Amara's potential.

"See? You're not just a girl with a stray cat," Jake exclaimed, pride shining through. "You're a powerful summoner, and you deserve to be recognized for it."

For the first time, Amara felt like she was starting to carve her place in this new world. She turned towards Jake, gratitude filling her eyes. "Thank you for believing in me."

"Always," Jake said, grinning. "Now, let's keep pushing forward. Tomorrow, we'll show them what we're made of."

With determination and camaraderie fueling their spirits, they left the training hall, ready to face whatever came their way, together.
