A week before their attack on Warsaw, Jacques received a call from Doctor Fenrich.
"Major Enfield, high command has informed me to relay the existence of a Lanstonian spy amidst the enemy ranks." Fenrich stated over the radio.
"So it's true that we have eyes and ears within other countries." Jacques mumbled.
"Our agent doesn't have a name but his current alias is Anatoli Ruvovich. He's currently working as the secretary of the famed General Ivanovich." Fenrich added.
"Should I keep this between us, doctor?" Jacques asked.
"I've only been authorized to inform you and you alone. I don't need to inform the Sparrows, Hugo is aware of the Jäger program." Fenrich added.
Jacques ended the transmission and took a step outside of his tent. Their unit was just a few days away from Warsaw so everyone was busy with preparations for the upcoming assault. They've received word that the Colonel's unit will be joining them but will be delayed because they were ordered to support another unit further north. Jacques was in charge mainly of strategizing and managing logistics while he's still recovering from his cold. Roger took the responsibility of managing both companies to ease the burden on Jacques.
"Jacques, we're moving a lot faster than expected. Do you think our logistics are moving fast enough to catch up with us?" Roger asked.
"The logistics team are moving slower than us but they're surely arriving on time when we need them." Jacques replied before smiling.
"You should get better soon, the men needs more morale and they probably miss you too." Roger jokingly said.
"Well, I miss them too. Don't worry so much because I'll be better before we get to Warsaw. I owe you a lot for covering for me." Jacques replied before chuckling.
"I already listed down the things you need to pay me back. You're welcome." Roger added, looking away and his cheeks flushing pink.
"You haven't changed one bit, still the bipolar Roger from before." Jacques stated before nudging Roger playfully.
Fast forward a week, to their assault on Warsaw. Anatoli stood in front of Hugo and Hilbert as he points his gun to General Ivanovich. Hilbert kept his guard up, still doubting everything Anatoli said.
"You see, I'm just one of many agents. Lanston has made sure that we remain the strongest power on earth. To do that, we needed to be a step ahead of everyone else." Anatoli explained.
"The gist of the Jaëger program. It seems like we have new orders in rule. We'll escort you and the general out of Warsaw." Hugo stated.
"That would be greatly appreciated. I'll pose as a prisoner as to keep suspicions from ever landing on me." Anatoli replied.
"Good, I'll make sure it's believable that you're a prisoner." Hilbert added as he glared at Anatoli.
Hugo smacked Hilbert's head and scolded him. Anatoli broke character and began laughing but he couldn't help but worry at the thought of his safety being entrusted to man-children like Hugo and Hilbert. General Ivanovich also expressed the same worried look on his face as the two continued to argue.
"Maybe we should hurry and get back before we get overrun by Russian infantry." Anatoli suggested.
"This way." Hugo ordered as he binded the general's hands.
"You, put these on. And make it quick." Hilbert told Anatoli as he tossed a piece of rope to him.
"I'm very charmed." Anatoli joked as he tied himself up and followed behind the general.
The five of them headed out of the building, with Hugo and Hilbert holding the general and Anatoli as hostages. The soldiers outside the city hall were startled as the prisoners ran past them holding the general as hostage. They couldn't shoot because they couldn't risk killing the general.
"Don't shoot you bastards! I'll have your heads if any of you shoot me in the crossfire!" General Ivanovich exclaimed to the soldiers around them.
"It's only a few hundred meters to run so I'll go ahead of you guys." Johann stated before sprinting ahead of the others.
Johann with his blade drawn, began cutting down the enemy soldiers in his way. He would slash at them but he would never hit any vital areas that would end in him killing them. He did this till he could see fellow Lanstonian soldiers fighting neck to neck with the enemies. He assisted Jeremy's squad clear an area in the enemy defenses so Hugo and the others can return safely.
"Johann, what happened to your head?" Teresa asked as she popped out of nowhere.
"Long story short, Hugo hit me with a rifle's butt stock." Johann replied as he shot at the enemy soldiers.
"Hugo did what?" Teresa exclaimed as she clenched her hand into a fist.
"That's not important, they're coming back with the general. Let's keep their path clear." Johann added before running back towards the enemy lines.
"That's not the issue right now! Come back here Johann!" Teresa shouted as she chased after Johann.
"What's wrong?" Hilbert asked Hugo.
"I just felt a terrible chill go up my spine." Hugo replied as he shivered.
"We're close, right?" Anatoli asked.
"It's just up ahead." Hilbert coldly replied as he continued to aim his gun towards Anatoli.
Hugo looked ahead and spotted Johann and Jeremy killing enemies left and right. Hilbert ignored Anatoli and began shooting as many enemies as he could, he couldn't help but feel competitive with how smug Jeremy looked towards him.
"Get the general nice and comfortable! We'll cover you guys!" Hugo exclaimed.
"Yes sir!" The soldiers shouted as they escorted Anatoli and the general to Jacques.
Anatoli unbounded himself and asked for a gun as they escorted the general. They arrived to where Jacques and his unit set up to support the other platoons from the rear. Anatoli introduced himself but Jacques cut him off.
"I've already heard about you. This must be General Ivanovich. It's a pleasure to finally meet you." Jacques stated as he offered his hand.
Anatoli translated for Jacques and the general as they conversed. Jacques gave his compromise and the general was not able to refuse.
"So what happens to you after this?" Jacques asked.
"I'll be transferred someplace else, given a new identity, a brand new life." Anatoli replied.
"It's just normal to you now, huh?" Jacques asked once more.
"It's just how the Jaëgers work. We don't own our lives, the government does. But we're loyal enough to follow without a second thought." Anatoli explained before flashing a smile.
