"Okay, now! Get to the rally!" Edward shouted as he jumped out of cover.
The enemies saw the group and aimed their guns before gunning them down. Riddling the entire group out in the open with bullets. Edward was lucky and was able to hide behind a metal tank trap.
"Damn it...they're supposed to silence those MGs." Eugene mumbles as he runs out of cover and dive into a crater.
He was shocked to see a soldier in the crater missing his lower half. Breathing and alive but barely. The sight of it upset Edward's stomach and he threw up on the sand.
"Your battle is over, you can rest now." Edward whispers before taking the soldier's dog tag and running out the crater.
Edward made it to the defilade where the others were and he noticed Eugene was there and was tending to a wounded soldier.
"Eugene, have you seen the others?" Edward asks Eugene.
"Not yet, captain. I've only met up with the other combat medics so far." Eugene replied as he wrapped a bandage around a soldier's torso.
"We gotta move up, the sappers are coming and we have to disable that bunker. We need to clear the way for the tanks." Edward added as he loads a magazine in his SMG.
Edward took the attention of the nearby disorganized and disorientated men hiding behind the defilade and ordered them to clear the barbed wire in any way they can. They used grenades and even the bayonets on the end of their rifles to try and get rid of the barbed wire. It wasn't that effective but they were able to create a small gap big enough for them to crawl through. Edward organized everyone on the rally and one by one they crawled through, ducking under the constant gunfire. Edward waited till he saw Eugene enter last before crawling to the other side to meet the others.
"Okay, split up to two groups. Five of you come with me and we're clearing the bunker, the rest of you clear the trenches." Edward orders them before peeking the corner.
"Captain, I'm coming with you." Eugene demanded to Edward.
"Okay, but don't do anything reckless." Edward replied before ducking down and running towards the ruins of a small house.
Eugene and the others followed behind him and they all slowly crept up on the enemy bunker. The other group went a separate way and circled around to flank the mortar teams who were constantly firing towards the beach. The enemy was unaware of how close the Lanstonians were because of how massive the scale of the attack was in such a short amount of time.
"Split up, two go by the door and chuck a grenade inside while we shoot them from here." Edward orders them.
"Let's flush these bastards out." Bright replied as he taps on the shoulder of the man next to him.
They snuck up behind the bunker and they get spotted by an enemy soldier by the entrance. They exchange fire but the enemy was able to escape and warn the others inside. Bright charged towards the door and chucked a grenade inside but gets his arm shot before fully getting behind cover. Once the grenade exploded, Edward and the rest started blindly shooting through the gaps of the bunker. Once they emptied their magazines, they ran to the back of the bunker to secure the nearby trenches. Eugene rushed towards Bright and gave him medical attention as the others clear out the nearby trenches behind the bunker.
"This is just a flesh wound, don't worry so much Eugene." Bright chuckled.
"Yeah but I'm required to give you medical attention. I'm required to take care of all you reckless buffoons." Eugene smiled as he wrapped a bandage aroun Bright's arm.
Little did they know but there was an enemy soldier who was still alive within the bunker. He made his way out with a knife in hand and charged towards the soldier behind Eugene and stabbed him on the neck.
"Die you scums! Go back to the shithole you came from!" The enemy soldier said before turning his attention to Eugene and Bright.
Bright pulled Eugene down and got on top of him to take the stab to his back before screamig in pain and turning around to pin the enemy down. The two wrestled but because of Bright's injured arm, his grip grew weak and the enemy was able to get him in a head lock and snapped his neck. He pulled out the knife from Bright's back and faced Eugene who was now cowering in fear. Curled up and hugging his knees as he prayed for someone to save him.
"You shouldn't have come here! You're all dead!" The crazed soldier said to Eugene before getting shot by Edward.
"What did I say? Scream for help when you need help." Edward pulled Eugene up and embraced him.
"I'm sorry, I froze and I didn't know what to do." Eugene replied in a shaky tone.
"Don't scare me like that ever again. Richard told me to take care of you in case he wasn't around to do it. I don't want to let him down." Edward added before patting Eugene's back.
The enemy's defenses became weak now that Edward and his group breached the barbed wire and disabled an enemy bunker overlooking the beach. With this, the sappers were able to move up and they made a path for vehicles and made the gap in the barbed wire bigger so more troops can move inland. This small victory also lead to all the other units to take their designated part of the beach. It wasn't long before the remaining members of the 116th was reunited, now only half of them remained alive and the rest were left dead on the beaches where they first took step.
"Richard, Edward, you guys pulled through. I'm glad you kept your promises." Jacques says cheerfully as he patted Richard and Edward's shoulders.
"Of course, I had to keep my promise or else I won't be able to protect Eugene." Richard smirked as he pulled Eugene closer and gave him a nuggy.
"Richard, stop it. I hate it when you treat me like a kid! I'm a man, a soldier now!" Eugene exclaimed
"Your a man? You haven't even kissed a woman yet!" Edward replied and laughed with the rest of the division.
