Chereads / Felixa / Chapter 11 - Chapter eight: Identity uncovered

Chapter 11 - Chapter eight: Identity uncovered

Getting into the limo Jerry takes driver seat as they heads towards the agency. The group of four riding in a peaceful quiet as the burnette gazes out the window.

"Oh, I have something to give the two of you." Ron breaking the silence as he pulls out twin masks of cartoon characters. Handing the girl one to Brooklynn and the other to Sonny.

"What are these for?" she questions.

"I purchased them to further keep your identity a secret. With Ryder the media found out he was the next Felixa after a fight in broad daylight. As mentioned before they only make things more difficult for us. Right now people only know your name, which is why you are to go by a fake one. But if people catch you using your powers in public, it'll be the same mistake all over again."

"Oh, that makes sense..." They have no idea when Duran or any of the others will launch another suprise attack. Thankfully with the last incident no one found them out, but they can't always be so lucky.

"Basically you just want us to hold on to this so if something ever arises?" Sonny asks, and the red head at the wheel nods.

"Yup, make sure you keep them on you at all times."

"Hey, does the media know you're identity already? Since you helped Ryder and all," Brooklynn questions.

"Actually no. We were caught in a fight one late night and during it Ryder gained his power of light. He managed to wrap up the battle just as some had witnessed him using his power. It isn't common knowledge that the Felixa has a partner, since it wasn't the case for Amethyst. People just assumed I was a normal bystander."

"I see..." If people had known Sonny was with him figuring out she was chosen next would be quite obvious. Though she wonders where was he when the first girl died. Did he not discover his powers yet? Before she can ask anything else Ron announces that they're nearly there.

After dropping the kids off at the entrance both detectives take their leave. Informing they'll get the new belongings in her room set up while they're busy practicing. The two head up to the training room she's grown accustomed to visiting by now. "So, what's on our agenda today?"

"I'm going to teach you your last two powers, the laser and flash abilities." Carrying over a stool from the side of the room, Sonny sets it down in front of her. "I want you to split this chair in half with your laser ability. Just as any other spell it only requires control and concentration. Be extra cautious with this one though. These lasers are strong enough to cut through just about any object. Though with human skin it works different, and the most it'll do is burn us a bit."

"Okay, got it." Taking a deep breath she only hopes to have more control than when trying the ice ability for the first time. Sonny observes from behind her as she tries to clear her mind. The laser shoots out so fast it's a little hard to aim. Nearly slicing one of the exercise equipment across from her into pieces. Though the ginger manages to interfere before she can. The absolute last thing she needs to do is cause Ron and Jerry even more money. Fortunately after a couple more attempts she's able to split the chair right into two. "That was awesome after I got the hang of it!"

"Good, you've definitely improved. However this last power will probably be the hardest to master. You will use your flash ability, like the move you witnessed Gores pull on your first night here. Think in your head where you want to teleport to, and block out everything else."

Closing her eyes Brooklynn tries again and again to use the ability but nothing seems to happen. Thinking much harded her eyes squint tightly shut as she brawls up fists in frustration. "Just breathe. This won't work unless you're in a calm state." She hears Sonny's advice echo through the darkness, and similar to the car incident her mind begins to relax. After what feels like forever she finally teleports by the entrance.

"Wah, this isn't where I had in mind to go at all!" She may have used it but apparently not correctly.

"You have to be even more focused than usual when teleporting. Having a vivid image in your head where it is you want to appear, or you could end up just about anywhere. Let's try it again."

Going back to her original postion it's more trial and error, until at last she successfully appears on the otherside of the room next to the fitness bike. "Wow, just like I pictured! It finally worked!"

The ginger giving her a small clap of applause. "Great job, you managed to do it. This concludes your training. Now you'll continue to practice your abilities until feeling you mastered them enough to take your final test."

"Final test?"

"It'll recap everything you learned to make sure you're prepared to engage in combat. There's monsters in the ruins not to mention more of the FDO members trying to make their move. Right now you know the abilities but still take too long in your casting. You have to work on that before you're actually ready."

It's true when witnessing Sonny fights he casts his spells almost instantly. Having to take so long to attack will easily give the enemy the upper hand. This much makes sense and all but something else strikes odd about what he just said. "Um, aren't you forgetting something? With my training I mean," she hints, Sonny only titling his head in confusion.

"Huh? We found out your special power from the start. Then practicing the ice and fire abilities as well the electric shockwave. Plus you learned how to use elastic and with the two covered today that should be everything."

"What about my power of light?! I can't purify the Erebos chest without it."

"Oh, I...can't teach you since I don't have that power. They say the power of light will shine when the time is right. Did for Ryder so I'm sure it'll be the same for you too. There's nothing that can be done but to wait."

She wonders just how long that'll end up taking. It's a moment of silence until Brooklynn kicks her feet at the floor quite innocently. "So, my final lesson is coming up soon. You know, I haven't been out much whatsoever since we've started training. I say as reward of successfully learning all of my magic will entitle you to treat me out for ice cream!"

"Hmm....Alright, if you complete your training with flying colors we'll go out for ice cream," he agrees with a small smile, and honestly she's surprised he consented so easily.

"Great! I know whatever it is I'll be able to nail it."

"Don't get too cocky before you see what's in store. I'll let Ron know we're done so we can get dropped back off at school."

Days pass as Brooklynn does as advised and practices her powers. Eventually she's able to cast them at a much faster rate than at the start. Even proclaiming she's mastered her telekinesis the girl finally tells them she is ready for the test. This will determine if she's strong enough to begin the real mission. Setting a date they agreed it would be held today after school.

The pair head inside the dormitory walking down to their rooms. Brooklynn is a little nervous on how she'll do, but Sonny did promise her an ice cream trip if passing. With sweets at stake she can't afford to lose. "Ron and Jerry have things to do, so they won't be coming until later this evening," Sonny informs, before detouring in his own room.

"Oh, okay..." Usually Sonny would pester her making sure she's not stepping a foot from here without his protection. Even more so now with the past Cheryl incident, though why is he acting relaxed today?

Peeping inside next door he's digging in his drawers for a change of clothing. "Going somewhere?"

"Yeah, I'm going to a basketball game with my friend, Kite. It won't be long and I'll be back before they get here. Just stay at the dorms and you'll be fine."

"No way! Wherever you go I go. Those were your words remember?" He isn't leaving her behind stuck at the school grounds while he goes off to have fun. Especially after all the following he has done with her, like the study date with Josef. Now he can get a taste of his own medicine and besides, she's hardly been able to much of anything since coming here. She could really use a break to help calm her nerves before the test. "So you're trying to leave me at the dorms while you go out and have a good time. What if something happens while you're away?"

The boy bites his lip and not seeming to be able to come up with a comeback lets out a sigh. "Fine, you can come."

"Yes! I'll go get ready," she says with a skip in her step. Hurrying to her room to find a normal outfit to slip on.

Changing out of uniform she now wears a yellow tie back shirt, with a red heart design in the front, and a blue jean skirt. She slips on her favorite brown ankle boots with a wrist watch that matches. Letting her burnette hair down freely from its pigtails and holding the left side back with a clap. She's just about to leave the room when suddenly remembering what Ron said before. Grabbing a bag she places the mask she received inside. Hopefully nothing will happen but it's best to be prepared. With one final check she finally rejoins Sonny in waiting in the hallway.

"There you are. It's about time."

"I didn't take that long dressing." She examines Sonny wearing a purple lace up pull over with a hood, and a blue shirt underneath it. His bottoms are ripped blue jean shorts with a belt, and matching sneakers. Also having a small bookbag on behind him. Perhaps he's carrying his for caution as well. She hasn't seen Sonny out of school uniform very often, but his look definitely gives her the skater boy vibe.

"Let's go. I don't want to keep him waiting." Following his lead to the school's front gate.

Walking up one figure stands alone playing on his cellphone. She actually recognises him as a classmate in her seventh hour, though they haven't ever spoke. "Hey, Kite. Sorry it took me so long."

"No problem...You never said you were bringing your girlfriend along." The taller boy's eyes says locking with her own. He has dark blue hair with eyes a lighter shade, and a few freckles on his face. His right eye is covered up and he's wearing a red jersey with matching black sweat pants. He never really stands out in class, so she doesn't know much about him. Though he always seemed to give off the impression that he values his space.

Just now reliazing what he referred to her as causes both of them to shout in unison. "Girlfriend?!"

"She isn't my girlfriend. She's just a friend of mine who really wanted to see the game. Besides, what makes you think I would be interested in her? Don't let her pretty face fool you, in reality she's a dork."

"And what makes you think I would want to go out with a jerk like you?!" she growls, but Sonny doesn't seem fazed in the slightest.

Kite watches their interaction quietly before slowly nodding. "Alright, I guess I misunderstood then."

"Um, you're in my seventh hour, right? I'm Hira Collins."

"Oh, right the new girl. The name is Kite Mitchells. Nice to meetcha."

"We better hurry to the stadium since we're already running late," Sonny informs, as the trio walks to the station. Catching a train that drops them right across from their destination.

Venturing inside the place is packed as they track down their seats towards the middle. Apparently she's only able to join them because some other classmate bailed at the last minute leaving a free ticket. Honestly she's not that much of a sports fan, but anything is better than being cooped up at the school.

By the time they order refreshments the basketball game is starting. The boys both rounting for their own team as she struggles to keep up with the rules to this game. The single sport Brooklynn knows the in and outs of is golf, considering her Grandpa watches it all the time.

I can't believe how hype people get into this sorta thing. Sure it's more exciting than golf but still not much higher on my scale. At least I get a chance to get some fresh air, and the food they sell here is surprisingly good.

The game lasts for over two hours and by the time they leave the stadium her foot as fallen asleep with her mind not far from it. Though Brooklynn's lack of energy is a complete opposite from the boys walking behind her talking excitedly. "I told you they would win! They're the best team on the planet." Kite throws a fist in the air but Sonny only rolls his eyes.

"They only pulled it off in the last seconds of the game. That was just pure luck."

"They've made a comeback. You're just upset your team lost twice now..."

Sonny said it would be enough time for the test but the game lasted longer than planned when going into overtime. And I really was fired up to do it today...Huh?

Their chatting as well as her own thoughts gets drowned out when feeling a presence nearby. Almost as if someone is watching her. Brooklynn looks around anxiously but not a suspicious person is in sight.

I could've sworn I heard something. I have this uneasy feeling someone is watching us, but maybe it's just me...

"Nebula to Hira? Something wrong?"

"It's nothing," she mumbles in response to Sonny's question. Deciding to pick up her pace.

The burnette continues to keep an eye out while they walk and just when approaching the station she spots a glimpse of something that definitely isn't human. A small gasp escapes her lips before she can stop it. Immediately tugging on her guardian's arm to grab his attention. "Sonny."

"Jeez, what is it? If you're so bored you should've stayed at the dorms like I said. We'll be back soon-" Cutting himself off when spotting the monster off in the distance, that's currently making it's way towards them. "Duran...We have to go!"

"What? Go where?"

"There's something Hira just reminded me of that we need to pick up for our school project. Might as well buy it while we're here, but you can just catch the train back to the school. See you later!" Not giving chance for his friend to pry any further, he grasps her hand as they run off the opposite direction.

Reaching around the corner they quickly pull the masks from their bags. "So you thought to bring yours along too," Sonny comments, sounding a little impressed.

"Naturally, you never know when something can come up."

Putting them on strangely does make her feel more heroic. Giving a small nod in agreement as the two take off down the street together. The young teens come face to face with a huge green glob monster that is sucking up everything in its path.

"It's huge!" she exclaims, the monster nearly tall as a building.

"It's because all the things he's sucking up is making him bigger..." Sonny mumbles, and the creature has now noticed their presence. It seems not to be attacking at anyone in particular, but when spotting them picks up a parked car on the edge of the road. Even with tiny arms manages to hold on firmly, then throwing the vehicle right towards them. The burnette is so frazzled she can't get herself to move. Sonny sliding in front of the older girl, and just at the last second uses his laser. Cutting the car right in half before it can even touch them. Each piece blows past leaving them standing safety unharmed in the middle.

"Everyone please get to a safe place! We'll take care of this," Sonny shouts to the few passersbyers out and about.

Finally snapping from her daze Brooklynn tries attacking while Sonny instructs people to evacuate the area. Making sure nobody is in the way before casting this spell. "Electric shockwave!" Luckily her first choice temporarily paralizes it, and she excutes a follow up attack with her laser beam. Splitting the slime giant in two, but the relief only lasts for a moment as it slowly reforms itself. "Of course it wouldn't be that easy."

(Kite POV)

Kite lazily lisetns to music in his ears while waiting for the train to arrive. Just as it comes pulling up he notices commotion from a distance. People yelling of some monster from the exact direction the others took off moments before. Weighing out his options for a minute then turning his feet back towards town. "I'll just have to take the next train, but if they're shopping out that way they could be in trouble."

Hearing loud sounds the futher he walks causes him to pick up the pace. Kite's body completely frozen stiff when seeing the monster two masked figures are currently engaged in battle with.

(Brooklynn POV)

The glob releasing a sharp cry it begins throwing some of the slime in all directions. Sonny puts up his shield but it's not strong enough, sending the boy tumbling across the pavement. "Ah, No!" With him down it refocuses the attention unto her. Brooklynn uses her ice on the ground which freezes it only for a split second before breaking free. "So much for that. Huh, Kite!" Turning around to spot a blue haired boy standing dumbfounded by the huge monster in front of him.

"W-What is that thing?!" That remark has it looking towards him now. Throwing slimes balls at his direction while he hardly gets the chance to scamper away. Unfortunately before he can turn the corner one attack does land him. Kite falling foward on the ground unable to move.

"Why is it attacking at him and not me?" Brooklynn tries shocking it again but this round it's not working in the least.

What do I do? The ice hardly damaged it at all, and it's practically immuned to the electricity now. The elastic won't help on this situation or the laser, and I don't have any weapons with me. If I just had my power of light I could-

Reaching the kid at last it lifts him up off the concrete. Slowly lowering him into his gigantic darkpit of a mouth. Kite tries his best to wiggle and squirm out of it's sticky grasp but nothing is working. "Kite!" Brooklynn goes to attack again but stops when hearing footsteps coming from behind her.

Sonny uses his laser to cut it's arm off thus releasing him. However that only has him fall at even quicker speed. Just before he can be eaten alive he quickly jumps in the air using his beyond gravity to push Kite out of the way. Both tumble a bit though thankfully seem to be in one peice as the ginger stands on his feet. "Brooklynn, use your fire with me! I faced this kind of monster before in the ruins and I remember it's weakness is fire. It should be the same for this one, but we'll need a lot of it."

Fire! Why didn't I think of trying that before?!

"Okay, I'm on it!" Gathering magic up they both set the thing ablaze, and this attack has it melt away to nothing. Her body does feels a bit tired using only spells, but at least the battle was finished now. "It actually worked! I'm so glad that's over."

Though her relief is short lived when both turn to face Kite still watching nearby. If they're to cover up their identity she needs to think of something quick! "Are you alright, boy? That was one close call there."

"I already know it's you, Hira. Though I suppose your actual name is Brooklynn, the next Felixa. Though the news never mentioned you had an ally."

"You catch on fast!"

"Well you guys are wearing the exact same outfits I just saw you in. Plus I felt something was off since you left so suddenly," he calmly explains. Sonny sighs offering him a hand on his feet.

"You really aren't injured anywhere with that last move I pulled?"

"Just a few scraps but I'm honestly fine. Would've been a goner right now if you hadn't acted when you did."

An awkward silence falls in the air mostly debating where the conversation goes from here. "Look, you can't tell anyone at school about this. We're trying to keep a low profile until she destroys the Erebus chest. I'm tasked with protecting her no matter what."

"Is that the dark magic you're supposed to be searching for? I never would have guessed the random guy I befriended in class was the Felixa's partner. You're suppose to have some light ability right, Brooklynn?"

"Oh, yeah, I haven't awakened to my light magic yet. You...seem to be handling this all pretty well." Assuming any normal person would show a little more emotion given what's been revealed.

"Kite's always been like this. It would need to take a lot to get a strong reaction out of him," Sonny comments, but the taller boy shakes his head.

"Not entirely accurate. I'm just gifted at masking my emotions. Anyway, your secret is safe with me. I know a lot is riding on this and I'd be stupid to jepodoaze it. Especially after what I just witnessed."

"Thank you, Kite." Brooklynn's happy to hear Kite has agreed to keep their secret. Honestly talking now he seems like a chill guy. She shouldn't been so quick to judge him before.

"Ah, we were suppposed to been at the dorms by now!" Sonny snapping her out of thought. Judging by the sun setting in the sky they need to hurry back.

"The next train will be here in ten. We can make it if we step on it." Following Kite's lead the trio sprints for the train station.

...

The first thing they're greeted to when reaching the school is both detectives standing by the limo. Arms crossed with feet tapping as the continue to look at their watches. The red head catches a glimpse of them getting Ron's attention. Sonny waves for Kite to go on ahead and the blue haired boy casually walks past heading to the dormitory. "Where have you been?! You knew we were coming today." Ron's irritation quite clear in his voice. Before she can muster anything Sonny speaks up first.

"Sorry, honestly something came up."

The men exchange glances as his quick apology, probably knowing what type of trouble they ran into. Thankfully they decide not to pry for any details. "...Well it's too late for it now. We will be back tomorrow for your final test. Make sure you kids are actually here next time," Jerry says, and both get in the vehicle taking off down the street. She's just happy this was nothing like when they crashed the old man's car.

"Duran is attacking more frequently now. We need you to gain your power of light so we can start searching for the chest."

"I know. I'm glad Kite promised to keep quiet, but should we've told them about it?" she questions.

"Do you wanna get chewed out again like the last time? It's just Kite so there's no need for them to know." Actually he was the one chewed out, but perhaps it is easier to keep this whole incident to themselves. Kite did give his word and Sonny seems to trust him.

"Tomorrow is my last day of training. I wonder what they'll want me to do..."

"You'll be okay, probably."

"Probably?!"

"Better rest up for tomorrow. Your ice cream trip is depending on it," he replies, walking ahead to the dorms as Brooklynn follows after.
