I locked the door, stepped into my boots, and helped you get dressed because you were still drowsy with sleep.
I opened the window with trembling fingers while you screamed at me.
"What's happening?" you yelled frantically.
I was afraid your grandmother would hear us.
There was a knock on the door. Someone rattled the doorknob and cursed when they realized the door was locked.
"Let me inside." It was Michael on the other side of the door. Michael with his adorable teenage boy voice that made my legs weak jelly in my denim jeans.
"Green."
You looked at me with your beautiful cucumber eyes like I would never betray you for him, one leg dangling out of the window.
"Go," I said quietly. I wanted you to get away from here. Escaping was important to you.
Your eyes glazed over with tears like this was the end of the world and I was sacrificing myself so you could live.
You seemed to realize that I wasn't planning on following you, so you slipped through the window into the ominous night.
I unlocked the door.
I suppose it was better this way.
