I made my way through the pack house and out the back door to our training grounds where everyone of every age in the pack were seated in the bleachers. There was a small stage with a microphone sitting on a stand dead in the center of the stage. Oh how I love Mondays. I walk through the field with my head held high. After all I am an alpha by nature. Even with all that confidence literally coursing through my blood I still had to look back at my best friend for reassurance before walking onto the stage.
Malerie gave me a smile and a slight nod, letting me know that she was going to be right there the whole time. Malerie has flame red hair, light skin and blue eyes. She stands at five feet three inches and is the fiercest warrior in our pack. She is more of a pear shape but is still toned and mainly muscle. I don't know what i would do without her. I was thankful that my lifelong best friend went through the change too and so happened to be chosen as my beta. I could never ask for anyone better for a beta or best friend.
I go through the morning announcements and other important topics. After I was finished with announcements I was getting ready to dismiss the pack so they could go about their lives when the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I heard the collective growl coming from my pack. The smell hit me like a ton of bricks. Slashers, also known as the wolves that go rogue. They become beasts and tend to wreak of death seeing as all they do is hunt and kill just for fun. They were on the outer borders and moving fast.
"Okay everyone get the children, elderly, and all other nonwarriors to safety. Warriors come with me" I said in my alpha voice. Everyone began to scramble at my orders. Everyone was soon in the places they should be and the rest of us were in wolf form running towards the slashers. There hasn't been slashers sighted in any pack territories in three years. Why now? Why my pack?. As I race towards the clearing at the edge of our land Im caught by surprise by the sight in front of me. There were 6 of them. They weren't mangy or skinny like most slashers. Instead these were healthy slightly discolored wolves. Not husks like they should have been.
I was intimidated a little I'll admit. Someone came walking out of the woods and a chain in his hand. He was tall with short black hair and charcoal eyes. He had his canines extended and his claws elongated. He was wearing a black cloak over dark jeans and a matching dark shirt. He stopped three feet away from me and smirked. For some reason this action made me shudder inside. When he was obviously pleased with my reaction he tugged on the chain and a beautiful black wolf came limping forward. He had silver cuffs on his legs that burned his skin with every step. He looked so broken, so ashamed of himself. It was when he looked me in the eyes did I realize he was in fact my mate.
I hadn't realized I said it out loud until Malerie stiffened and said in a whisper "That wolf is your mate?" I could only respond with a nod and then my wolf took over. Lunging towards the man that trapped her mate. How dear he hurt what's mine? I growled in my head. The second I charged my pack warriors charged with me. I could hear the fighting around me but couldn't focus on anything but getting to him. I had to save him, protect him. I HAD to get to him. the moment I came into contact with the man holding the chain knocking him to his feet. I could smell he wasn't a wolf but couldn't quite place the smell. Whatever it is I can tell the it's ancient.
He let go of the chain long enough for Malerie to grab it and lead my mate towards the pack house where he would be safe. I could tell it was hurting Mal to hold the chain with her mouth but she kept going anyway. I was so proud of her. I was too busy watching my beta to notice that whoever this man was got his hands and feet on my torso launching me at least seven feet in the air and into a nearby tree. In my dazed state I heard someone yell my name. Max my first in command of the pack warriors came rushing to my side. "They are retreating Duch, are you injured?" He said with more worry on his face then I've even seen on my own mother's. "Yes Im fine Max. Just got the wind knocked out of me". I said using the tree as support to get back on my now two feet. "Where is Malerie? Did she make it to the pack house?" I said in a sudden panic. I darted toward the pack house before anyone could say anything.
I have to get to him. I've waited so long for him please let him be okay. Please. I couldn't hear or see anything around me as I ran. Not stopping for anything as I made my way to the infirmary. As I busted through the infirmary doors I was automatically met by Mal. Who I scanned for injuries. "Where is he? Is he okay? Did you get his name?" I said frantically as the questions just kept spilling out. Malerie put a finger to her lips to make me stopped talking. When I finally stopped and took a deep breath she said "He is fine, currently unconscious but he's fine. We got the silver off of him and his body is healing slowly. But he is healing and Doc said that he should wake up either tonight or tomorrow depending on how much trauma he's been through." "Should I go sit with him and wait?" I asked all of a sudden nervous. Malerie just laughs and pushes me toward his room. This is it I think to myself, the time has finally come for me to get my mate.
