Chapter 1 - The Moment Our Eyes Met

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You imbecile, you abomination, you bloody mistake!", the words of my Directress- Griselda- of 18 years fade as I run into the woods.

I'd had had enough. No more beatings for simple and honest  mistakes. No more torment, abuse and tears. My short legs don't fail me. I know what I'd have to face if I decided to go back: relentless beatings from all the 6 mother's of the orphanage.

My body had endured enough. Luckily, my skin favours me by healing fast; a phenomenon I still  can't quite explain.

I stumble into the woods, Fatum dust roaming the atmosphere nomadically. I've noticed that the dust has decreased. The number of fatum has decreased. You'll find that the people of this world do not appreciate the beauty and vitality of their environment.

In this world, the tress glow in the dark with majestic colours, ensuring that darkness does not drown us after all. The tears that had been streaming down my face had dried on their own accord. I settle on the bank, hugged my legs and stared at the river that glows with blue pebbles. Water calmed me. It brought a sense of relief.

My escape. My sanctum. The water shined magnificently in the dark. I does not seem to shine well when there is light.

I guess the sadness had vanished as I remembered the dangerous creatures that roamed in the dark.

I quickly sit up. It is strongly advised that we not wander into the woods at night.

The Daunger Woods.

I have to admit, I become quite stupid when consumed by my emotions.

I wipe my sweaty palms on my dirty rag. I look frantically around me and suddenly everything was silenced. All the creatures hushed. It became eerie. My heart starts to pound in my chest. My breath becomes heavier. My body starts to shake. The eerie feeling crept up my body, the eerie feeling of fear.

"Excuse me?", I question, as a beautiful tall woman  appeared from the bushes, she is quite familiar.

I slowly made my way to her.

When suddenly a huge, light figure swooped her and threw her metres away. It roared loudly that I felt it's air brush up against my face, immediately drying my tears. It beams in extraordinary light. It's mane carried by wind, glistens with awesomeness.

My eyes averted to the woman but there was a miniature chaotic whirlwind that violently removed everything in its midst. Spiritus Serpens. The most dangerous creature in all the worlds. It preys on your weaknesses. It has camouflage abilities, it is large and unpredictable. This is the creature that children are warned about. It brings the most painful death. Evil beings would use them and keep them as pets. Once domesticated and tamed, one can keep it and send it to do their bidding.

"Are you stupid or suicidal?!", a deep, beautiful, masculine voice bellowed within the trees. The bustling and rustling of leaves were the only things heard as he strut towards. The luminosity from the water brightly lit his magnificently handsome face.

Everything about him demanded respect, it commanded authority.

His eyes.

His golden furious eyes.

They seemed to be the only visible in my eyes. Them and only them.

"What are you doing here?", he asked incredulously.

"I should ask the same for you", I whispered, suddenly interested in my caramel colored hands, stained with dirt. From a very young age, I was taught not to look at a person in the eye but at the ground.

"What!?", he asks. "Look at me", his voice ever so commanding. I slowly met his gaze and I felt my cheeks heat up.

He makes his way towards me. He is quite tall. "What are you doing here?", he asks once more.

"What are you doing here?", I ask. My mouth has to sewed, it seems. It, alone, gets me into a lot of trouble.

"You don't answer a question with a question", he says matter-of-factly. The huge being makes it way towards him- the one that scared off the spiritus.

It is a  Ferus. A powerful creature, but to a certain extent. "Good job, Ferrum", he compliments his pet and he soothingly brushes its mane.

"I was just wandering around". Lie.

"You are lying", he calmly states.

He chuckles. "Well, whatever you were doing here doesn't really concern me, and I'm glad, because I don't really care".

Ouch.

Why am I surprised? People were like this towards me.

"I must go", I quickly say.

"Not even a 'thank you'?", he says as I pass him. He has hold of my slender arm.

I close my eyes as I feel tingles shiver up my captured arm. I slowly turn around to meet his eyes. He frowns with confusion. Confused, as I.

"Umm, thank you...?", I say, asking for his name.

"I'm not telling you my name", he boredly says.

"Are you not afraid of the beasts that might inflict harm upon you? Like the spiritus?", I ask worriedly.

"Undermining a man's strength is offensive. I will handle myself quite well", he says.

I noticed his attire. It looks expensive and exclusive, whilst I wear a dirty long dress, my thick dark hair unkempt and wild- his a mesmerizing dark brown colour, silky and shiny, it reached the middle of his neck. It seems that he has been roughly combing it with his hands backwards in agitation. It is obvious he has a temper.

His jaw, his lips, his cheeks. Everything was strong.

"Like what you see?", he smirks. Arrogant.

I quickly shy away after I have been caught.

I swiftly turn around, with the thought that maybe the beating won't be so bad after all.

"Hey!", a voice calls.

I turn around and I roll my eyes.

"Yes?", I say.

"Don't  go around wandering in the woods  next time", he advices. I simply nod my head.

"Let me take you home", offers he, stiffly might I add.

I refuse. A part of me was embarrassed of my circumstances. A part of me cared about his opinions. I am peasant, a pleb. I shall always remain one.

"Please", says he.

"Do not worry yourself", says I.

I continue to walk. I feel his golden eyes penetrating my soul even from a distance.

I feel little droplets of water on my bare arms and little droplets soon become heavy rain. With each step I took, it seemed that it poured more and more unto me as if it is mocking me. Heavy footsteps approach me and turn back to see the golden- eyed furious young man.

"Please", his voice much softer. I look at him and see the innocence in his request. His hair dripping water from the rain.

He is so beautiful.

I stretch my left arm and he takes it. Easily lifting me onto the horse-whose name I've learnt- is Ferrum. Which means iron- a beautiful name.

I hold his waist, hesitantly might I add. My legs dangle on the right side of the white ferus as it strides on a steady pace, not fast and not slow either. I rest my wet head on his back, finding comfort there. The light exerted by the tress becomes a torch.

I see an orange light from a window and I knew that we were close.

"You can leave me here. Thank you", I quickly say.

"I don't want them to think that I have a companion of some sort.

"Me neither", he says. Somehow his words stung me the most.

I slowly slid down the massive horse, hitting the ground quiet harshly.

He took one last look at me, a look I could not decipher. His golden eyes scrutinized me.

"Not a word to anyone or I'll have your head", with that said, he strode off.

The ferus'  thunderous galloping could be heard even from afar. I lazily walked made my way back to the home. An orange light beaming from one window whilst the others were black as the night.

"You ought to be careful  Elysia", a rather grim, raspy voice called out.

"Mistress Adahlia", I stutter obliviously.

She slowly turns around her tall chair, the light from the fireplace casting a ghastly effect on her beautiful brown face. I look down, ashamed of my irrationality.

"I apologise", I whisper. The door is still slightly opened as I was trying to enter discreetly but had been caught by none other than Adahlia- the only mistress who does not seem hate me that much.

"To bed with you!", she whisper- shouts.

I tip- toe to the sleeping headquarters  as quietly as possible. As I reach the last step, I meet an angry visage. I look up and it is Acelynn. Her porcelain, pale but strong youthful  face contorted with anger. She abruptly grabs my arms and drags me to the bedroom. She throws me inside and looks at me, with an emotion similar to worry and being afraid.

I turn around and head to my bed. Feeling eyes on me, I turn my head and  Adriel's dark eyes are cast onto me.

"How special you must be to be allowed to return at such late hours on ferusback with a boy", she sneers.

I simply ignore her. I reach for my towels in my sack and head outside to take a bath. As I climb down the stairs, I hear aggressive loud whispers.

"We have to tell her", I voice I recognise as Adahlia's  states.

"She is still a child. A girl. This will change everything", another says. Acelynn.

"I care for Elysia as much as you do, if not, more. We have to do this, against our own wills. We will stand by her but she must know. She is a woman, she has proved herself throughout her 18 years of living. She is stronger than you think", Adahlia says.

I'm at a loss of words. Myriad questions run through my mind. What is going on?

I descend the stairs and two pairs of fierce eyes pierce me, until realization settled in them- that it is me and that I heard.

"Tell me what?", I say.

Acelynn's blonde hair swiftly turns as she does. She looks at Adahlia and Adahlia at her. Adahlia carefully approaches me as if to not scare me away. I stand frozen, unable to understand anything about what is happening.

"Elysia. We have to leave. I will tell you everything but we have to leave".
