Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

Ana Louella

After around twenty minutes of walking, my feet started to hurt, so I removed my heels and held them on my right hand.

"Why did I even wear these stupid heels?" I mumbled as I continued walking.

I already tried to ask for some help from some people who passed by me, but they didn't let me ride with them, so I just gave up.

I have been walking for almost thirty minutes now, but I haven't seen any bus stop shelters. More than that, I can't ask my friends to help me because I left my phone at home.

"How can I be so stupid?" I grunted as I pulled my hair.

I continued walking not minding the stones that jab my soles. I knew, I have got wounds because I can feel stings on my feet.

I stopped walking when I saw a car that is parked on the side of the road. Its headlights were turned on, so I was able to see where it was.

"Finally, I can get some help." I mumbled.

I walked towards it and as soon as I reached it, I tapped its window a couple of times, but I haven't got any response.

"Hello? Is anybody there?" I asked, hoping that the driver would answer.

I tapped the car's window again, but I didn't get any response, so I just gave up. I sat and leaned against the car' door. I placed my heels on the floor beside me and then pulled my knees to my chest and laid my head on them.

I'm lost, hungry, thirsty, tired, hopeless and helpless. In short, I'm doomed.

I was about to close my eyes and get some rest when I heard someone whimpered, so I quickly stood and examined the surroundings.

"Is anybody here?" I called out.

The person groaned, and I feel like he is in pain. I searched around the car, but I haven't found the person. I took a couple of steps forward and stopped when I saw a guy leaning against the road barrier while holding his side. I rushed into him and kneeled in front of him. I held his chin and raised it to get a clear view of his face.

"Drake- what happened?" I asked worriedly.

I removed his hand from his side, revealing his bloody hands. His white shirt was covered with blood as well. He seems unconscious, so I lightly slapped his bruised cheek to wake him up.

"Hey! Are you okay?" I asked.

He writhed and heaved a couple of times before answering.

"I'm not. Can't you... see?" He grunted.

"I'll call your friends and ask for some help. Where's your phone?" I asked.

"At home." He groaned.

"Now, we're doomed!" I sighed.

"Don't- don't sleep." I stammered.

He needs to be treated right away, but I don't know how to take him to a hospital. He has a car, but he surely can't drive because of his condition, and I can't drive too. Even if I can, I don't know how to go in there. I honestly don't know what to do, so I just prayed that someone will see and help us.

"Please, stay awake." I said.

"I know." He grunted.

"Get me… some water. I'm thirsty."

"We're in the middle of the road! Where can I even find a goddamn bottle of water?"

"Forget it." He groaned.

"How long can you endure the pain? It seems like getting help is impossible. Will you be able to survive this night?"

"I don't… know."

"Ugh! Why did I even have to see you here?" I groaned as I sat beside him.

"Drake, you can't die, okay? You can die anytime but not with me! I don't want to have you as my responsibility! You can't die-"

"Shut up! I'm not… going to… die, dimwit!" He snapped, cutting me off.

"Why- what happened? Why did you-"

"It's none… of your business. Will you… stop talking… to me?" He grunted.

"I'm trying to make you stay away, idiot!" I snapped.

"I don't… need it." He replied.

"Lie down." I said as I tapped my lap.

He scowled at me for a moment and then he looked away. He clearly doesn't want to lay his head on my lap, so I gently pulled his head down and placed it on my lap. He didn't complain, and he even adjusted his body and made himself comfortable.

"Idiot." I whispered.

Drake's eyes were closed, and I examined his face. His brows were furrowed, his body was curled up as he held his side, and his breathing was shallow and rapid. I saw him bite his lower lip as he writhed. I can feel that he really is in pain, and I hope someone will come and help us.

"Drake. Don't-"

"I'm awake."

I prayed again and after a couple of minutes, my prayer was answered.

"What's going on here?" A man asked as he kneeled in front of us.

I instantly looked up to see him. The man looks like he is in his late forties. He is wearing a checkered sturdy shirt, bib-and-brace overalls and a pair of black rubber boots. I assume he is a farmer.

"My- he was stabbed. We've been sitting here for almost two hours already."

"Hurry! We need to bring him to a hospital now before he loses all his blood." He said, and I nodded at him.

"Drake, let's get you to the hospital. Come on." I whispered at him.

"Drake, can you still hear me? If you can, please, answer me." I said.

"Yes." He groaned faintly.

I slung his arm on my shoulder and pulled Drake up but I failed because he is so heavy.

"Hey, help me pull yourself up." I whispered at him.

"How am I supposed to pull you up then?"

Drake didn't answer, and I only got a faint groan as a response. He must be feeling so weak because he has already lost so much blood.

"Let me help you." The man said.

He did help me pull him up and place him on his car's backseat. I got into the backseat as well and lay Drake's head on my shoulder. The man got into the driver's seat and drove away. I was reminding Drake to stay awake the whole ride, and I always make sure I get a response from him.

As soon as we reached the hospital, Drake was rushed to the emergency room, and we were asked to do his registration and wait in the waiting area while the doctor is treating his wound.

"Call me Uncle Dan." He said as we both sat.

"I'm Louella. Nice to meet you, Uncle Dan." I replied as I smiled at him.

"Do you know what happened to him?" He asked.

"I honestly don't know what happened to him. I just saw him in that state."

"Do you know him?" He asked, and I nodded.

"Is he your friend?" He asked.

"No, just an acquaintance." I answered.

"I thought he was your boyfriend. You seem very agitated… and distressed the whole ride." He piped up and then he chuckled.

"If he dies then I'd surely take the responsibility. I just-"

"There's no need to explain, my child. I get it." He said and then he chuckled.

I nodded and smiled at him to hide my confusion.

"I haven't thanked you yet, Uncle Dan. Thank you so much for helping us." I said and then I smiled at him.

"It's nothing."

"Words aren't even enough to return your kindness. I wish, I could bake some cookies for you."

"A simple thank you is enough, my child."

I smiled at him, and he smiled back at me as he stood.

"I need to go home now. My wife and children are probably waiting for me now. Don't worry, I'll come and visit you here tomorrow."

"No worries, uncle. Drive safely."

"Here's my phone number in case you'd need some help." He said as he took my hand and wrote his number in my palm.

"Take care of yourselves. I'll go ahead now."

"Bye, Uncle Dan! See you tomorrow!"

He nodded and smiled at me. I waved my hands at him as I watched him leave and when I could no longer see him, I sighed. I stared at my wounded bare feet.

This is all his fault! If he hadn't left me in there, then none of these things would have happened. He always ruins my days!

I didn't sleep the whole time I was waiting for the doctor. After about an hour, a doctor went in front of me.

"He's out of danger now. He's already transferred in RR 105, and he's now resting." He said.

"Thank you so much, doc." I replied.

"Some patients are waiting for me, I'll excuse myself for now. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask his attending nurse. You may see him in his room now."

"Sure, doc. Thank you so much."

After the doctor left, I went to Drake's room. They must have changed his clothes into a hospital gown. Drake is lying peacefully in the bed with his eyes closed. He must be probably sleeping, and I shouldn't disturb him.

I sat on a stool beside his bed and laid my head beside his arm. I looked at Drake for a moment and looked away immediately.

"Every time you're near me, I'd always get myself in trouble. Why do I always have to see you? Jerk!" I mumbled.

I closed my eyes and tried to think of a way to get some help either from my friends or his friends as I tried to get some sleep.
