Beatrice Nash's P.O.V.
"GOOD MORNING!" I woke up to the sound of Miranda, or Andy, for short, my dorm mate.
I should really get used to her voice every morning. Although this was the first time that she had been my alarm clock, I doubt that I would have a great morning. I felt so groggy. I don't think I will have the energy to go to school. I don't even think I'll have one. I don't like my division.
Speaking of divisions, yesterday's a chaos! Well, at least for me...
Nobody got a chance to speak, even the teacher whom we were listening to earlier, couldn't. After the ONE's leader's speech, he just bowed down and went down the platform.
Well that was... Awk..ward
"That's seems to be all of it!" She gave out an awkward chuckle. "Okay! To break the ice, we would be giving out your snacks! While we announce your divisions." As she said that there were people who already moved to give out the snacks. They planned this out well, huh?
"Okay so there are a total of 50 new students that are admitted for this school year, from various countries and we'll start from the first person admitted, from Philadelphia, Ms. Williams!" She paused for a moment to take a deep breath before continuing, "Now, based on your hobbies... You are most likely to be inclined into mathematics and you've had taking a liking on Maths! So, basing on that, you belong to FIVEs - the statisticians! Kindly go into your respective lines!" I watched how she stood up and went to her line with a smile on her face.
I hope I could be like her, too. But, I really do think that I do not belong here. I don't know what division I would be.
She continued calling random people. I didn't really give my attention since Miranda kept on talking to me and so far she's been nice to me. She's actually fun to talk to.
"Next is Ms. Nash!"
"You should try the canteen in the main building! It's sooo nice! The food is great and the ambiance is so relaxing! I'll go with you if I have time!" Miranda said. She was rather excited.
I swear, her eyes are twinkling. She must be day dreaming about the canteen that she was talking about. I smiled, she's so adorable!
"Really? That's cool, but you are a ONE right? You might be busy..." I said. I meant it though! Just by how their leader looked earlier, they seem to have gone through a lot and I think they are pretty busy with... stuff.
I don't know, okay?!
"Nah. It's fine. I can give you my digits if you want..." She offered me her hand as if she was asking for my phone. That took me off guard...
"Sure. Here's my phone!" I said before handing her my phone.
After that we exchanged numbers when someone called out to me.
"Ms. Nash? Ms. Nash! Kindly proceed to your line" I pointed out to myself and I asked Miranda if she knew my division but she just shrugged.
"You are a SEVEN. Congrats." I looked at Alexander. I was about to stand up and ask what my division is when he said that which I was really thankful for. That saved me from mush trouble. Jeez, I should really pay attention next time.
It would be humiliating if he didn't helped me. So I thanked him. "No problem. Next time, listen okay?" He gave me a warm smile before facing Miranda. Well, his eyes were now strict, " And you, stop your mouth when you are in a seminar, how many times should I tell you that?"
I just smiled and nodded at him while Andy (Miranda's nickname) just rolled her eyes at him.
"Well, I'll get going. See you later Andy!"
"Yep! See you later!"
I turned my back at them and sighed... A seven huh? A technologist.
Well, I guess I still couldn't get out of his grasp huh?
"You seem to be in deep thought" I snapped out of it when I heard Andy's voice
I sighed, "Its nothing really," Change the topic Bea! "Hey! Thanks for being my alarm clock!" I beamed at her and she returned the favor.
"My pleasure. But," Her face became serious. "You seemed different after the announcement, although I promised that we'll talk more in the evening, when I came home you were already asleep and now, your mind seems to be clouded with thoughts... Is there something wrong? You can tell me, I can help you, you know." I gawked at her, still half-asleep, before letting out a small chuckle. Still the same, talkative Andy.
I gave her a small smile, "I appreciate your thoughts and I am glad that you treat me as a friend. But, this is nothing. Really. It's just that... " I paused. Should I tell her?
"Just that..." I paused. Can I trust her?
I heard her sigh, "You seemed to be deeply troubled by it. Also, I think I'm being over reacting, but we just met so you would really think that you couldn't trust me right?" that's when I panicked
"No, no! Not at all, Its just that..." I can't believe that he could still control me, considering that we don't have a connection anymore... Or so I thought.
I heard her laugh, "You're cute. Don't push it, it's fine. I know you would open up to me sooner or later. Remember, I'm just here.... Anytime, okay?" then she gave me a warm smile.
"Thanks" I really appreciate her offer. She's really... nice.
"It's no biggie. You're welcome! Now, get your ass up! Let's have breakfast! I didn't really got a chance to have a meal with someone that is not in my same class so I am really excited! You know what? When I am still a THREE, I can only eat with the other THREEs and I didn't have a room mate back then. Now that I am a ONE, the people I got to know before and the other classes..." I let out a small laugh. Still the same old talkative Andy....
I'm lucky that I met someone like her. Thank God. I could still keep my sanity.
I just realized how isolated ONEs are. People had it rough but they were telling the truth - they are out of our reach. Both literally and... Not literally.
After breakfast the two of us decided to go to our classes together but when we are already at the main building's lobby, she told me that I should get my personal data and things in the information center in the center of the building, just like its name.
Well, that's a lame joke.
Anyways, she told me that she would be running late if she would accompany me, so I told her that she won't, it was just 7 am at that time.
"Our classes starts at 7:30" Andy informed me, 7:30? Mine starts at 8. Or so, I was informed.
"Well then, you still have 30 minutes to spare, come with me... please?" I insisted.
"You know that I would love to but..." she then looked behind me where you can see the different buildings of Sleuth academy and then she pointed at one building.
The building is designed in a modern style. It's color is white with a tinged of black and grey. Although it is not as tall as the other buildings, it seemed like it is one of the important buildings in the academy. But it looks... isolated. It is surrounded by trees and you can see that it is very far from the entrance of the school. In the contrary, it seemed to be in the back most part of the school.
"You see that building?"
"...What about it?"
"That is where the ONEs are getting their classes. It's really a bother some for us but it's fine, we can't do anything about it."
I sighed, the perks and the disadvantages of being a ONE.
"Oh well, I think you should get going. Sorry, I didn't know.."
"It's fine, really. I'll get going now! Just call me if you need anything!"
And with that... she left.
It wasn't really a big deal. I looked at the things that I am carrying at the moment. At the information center, I was given a black paper bag that has a big number '7', printed in silver, in the middle of it. Inside, contained a phone-like thing that is transparent and has a cord on it. The lady in the IC (Information Center) told me that it was my I.D. It was the same as my information card but its perks is that you can use it wherever you go. It's actually the same as the modern day phones where you can save basic information about yourself but in this case, you can use this, to give your identity to someone, as well as a medium to hack anything, or to scan as well. She didn't really tell me what more can it do because she said that 'it would be discussed in our class' and 'the perks of being a seven' she also kept on calling me a 'lucky seven'
Jeez, I didn't know that they also use that line here. Weird.
Aside from that, the bag also contained a pen, a laptop which is unbelievably light, a black backpack, a black card, A USB, lots and lots of cords, a key board, a mouse, an ipad-like thing, a pair of glasses, a key, a drawing pad and a mini tool box. Wow, they sure love the color black, huh?
She told me that the materials are the basic things that I would need for the whole time that I would be in the SEVEN group, but she also told me that whenever we get to need more techy stuff required for us in the classes, we can buy those in the bookstore at the 2nd floor of our building using the phone-like thingy that I have. She also gave me my schedule and informed me that we don't have any uniform but she still gave me a black jumpsuit that we would be used whenever the teacher told us to do so.
The SEVEN's building can actually be seen really easily. The color of the building is silver but you can see your reflection in its walls. It is one of the tallest buildings in the academy, second to the main building -- where all the faculty and administrators at. The building is quite elevated but it has stairs so you can get inside.
Once I was inside, I was shocked that I could see the people outside, and can hear the sounds from outside. It was a contrary from the outside where you cannot see nor hear a thing coming from the inside of the building. Pretty cool. I looked around.
Jeez, its full of technology stuff.
I sighed and looked at the directory that is located in the middle of the lobby. I looked at my section, 7-001. It's in the third floor.
I used the elevator to go there but before it moved, it asked for my identity so I scanned my I.D. on it and it projected my information. Unlike any other elevators, this thing doesn't need you to tell them where to go. It automatically brings you there.
The moment when the elevator's doors opened, it was immediately the class room, although there was still a small hallway, you could already see what the students are doing,
Unlike any other schools that I had attended, our classroom had a stage that had a big screen on it - like a monitor, or a giant television, it also had a podium on the left side of the stage. The student's table is a big semi- circle and the space between them is very big, the seats are like those that you can see in elite computer shops and surprisingly, there were only a small number of tables... About 20-25 tables I guess.
Before I could get inside to take a better look, I fell down, butt first, really...hard.
It would have been okay if nobody saw me... but since luck and I are not really in good terms, someone did. And of all people, it is a guy. Great! So much for the first day.
I saw him trying to control his laughter and wrote something on his ipad.
After a few seconds, he showed me his handwritten note, on the ipad. I know, it's weird.
"There is a barrier, look on your left. There is a scanner. Scan your I.D."
And so, I did. I looked at my left and saw a tiny box that is embedded in the walls in which you can only scan your I.D.
After I did that, I could feel a pressure on my side. Maybe, the doors opened already.
I cautiously walked and gave out a big sigh when I got inside. I looked at the guy who helped me, "Thanks" he gave me a smile, "It's nothing, I'm glad I can help. Although you looked kinda stupid there" then he laughed.
I winced and smile, "Yeah, I probably looked like a fool" I looked around. Everybody's looking at me. But not for long though, they got back to their computers, in their seats, and did their own thing. Some where typing something, some are watching videos, while some are just sleeping with headphones on - probably listening to some music. Maybe looking at me for a short period of time is their way to acknowledge my presence. Weird.
"I'm Miguel Wane Jonas, nice to meet you!" I looked back to the man who helped me and I saw him handing out his hand to me, so I grasp on it and shake it a little, so just it wouldn't be rude. "Hi Wane, nice meeting you!"
I was about to take back my hand when he held it firm, "What's your name?"
Oh, right. "I'm Beatrice. Beatrice Nash" He then smiled at me, "Nice meeting you then, Beatrice, let me lead you to your seat." he then let go of my hand. Wooh! Finally! He was weird at some point, LOL.
Wait, "How did you know my seat?" He stopped and looked back at me and smile, "Typical fresh starters" he then laughed, what's up with this guy?
He looked behind me, so I also did, "not at the back, on top of the doors, well a transparent one for you" he chuckled again, I don't think he would stop teasing me. This is gonna be hard, but he seemed nice. He looks nice as well.
I looked where he wants me to look and what I saw made me winced. It is just a television but the basic info that I had in my I.d., was displayed there: my name, my seat number, my specialty, blood type, age, birthday and my nationality. Jeez.
Wait, if he had known... Why would he ask for my name? I looked back at him and he just shrugged and smiled, "Just for the formalities" after saying that, he just continued walking.
He stopped in the seat near the walls of the building-- which is transparent, you can see the outside world from here, which is nice. But knowing my division? The outside world for all I know, cannot see us or anything that is inside of the building.
"Here's your seat. I'll get going!" He said and already took a step to leave me.
"Thanks!" I said and I just saw him wave at me, without looking back.
I smiled, its better than what I had expected. They're not all geeks after all. I think I can adjust.
I sighed and looked at my seat. It looks plain. I think I can design it on my own - as what I can see from the other students' table.
I placed the paper bag and my sling bag on the table and slumped on my chair.
Hmmm, it's comfy. Nice.
I sighed and leaned my head back to the head rest of my chair and closed my eyes.
So much for the first day.
