Chereads / The Race To Save Humanity / Chapter 3 - Chapter 2

Chapter 3 - Chapter 2

Slater sat on the edge of his bed, overhearing Wesson, Harvey and Jake talking about powers. "They found out" Slater said under his breath. He tapped his foot nervously. "They said they won't talk about it or approach me though, okay I think I'm good" Slater said, taking a deep breath. After another boring hour, a guard's voice echoed through a speaker. "Please make your way out back to the canteen for your lunch" As soon as everyone heard that, the canteen was full of people again for the second time today. Slater opened his door, making his way out, grabbing his lunch and quickly making his way back to his seat in the very far corner of the canteen. "This place is so ghetto, why couldn't everything just be normal, it's like we're living in Jumanji" Milan says laughing, sitting at a table around the middle. She sat with 6 other girls. When school was still around, Milan was considered to be one of the most popular girls in school. But she wasn't like those mean, fake ones. Milan loves nature and positivity and sadness just isn't in her vocabulary. "Why don't the people who get those injections ever come back here?" one of the girls asks. "That's what I've been wondering! I thought I was the only one!" Milan says, taking a sip of her bottled water. As soon as Slater overheard them talking about that, he wanted to figure out what this place is. And what they were gonna do to all of us eventually.

Around the end of the day...

Slater laid down on his bed, waiting for lights out. A guard's footsteps were heard at the door. "Slater, lights out" the guard says in a slight robotic voice. The demons were taking over their entire bodies slowly. After 5 minutes of darkness and complete silence, Slater stood up and slid on his shoes. After studying the facility, he found a narrow hallway, leading to the main office, where there was no security cameras. Slater tried to open the door as quietly as possible, it was hard since it was a metal door. It was pitch black and he prayed to God that he wouldn't trip over anything. Taking slow and small steps, he made it to the narrow hallway where no CCTV was placed. Slater stopped breathing for a while, to make sure he made no sound whatsoever.

He finally got to the door. A number pad was attached at the left side of the door. "Really a password?" was what went through Slater's mind. "Let's try 6-5-9-2" On the pad it read 'Access Denied' in red letters. After trying for a good minute, something came to his mind. "Maybe the year this facility was built" "1-9-8-7" It wrote 'Access Granted' in green letters. Slater smiled, which he hadn't done in years and entered the main office. It was a mess! How was he going to find anything useful here? Walking over to the desk, piles and piles of paperwork sat there. Slater picked up something slimy, then realizes it was an old banana peel. He threw it in a nearby bin with a disgusted look on his face. Suddenly, a big book caught his eye. He picked it up and blew off the dust. "THE BOOK OF DEMONS" was in big bold white letters and the background was a scrawny red color. Not wanting to waste any time, he tiptoed out, closing the door and rushing to his bedroom.

Sighing, Slater sat down on his bed. He took out a very small light and shone it on the book. He opened it, running his hands through the pages in awe. The second page read, "Demons' appearance" Slater looked at the drawing with wide eyes. Apparently, the demon souls had 3 legs and four eyes, apart from that, it looked like any other human being. He took out a small camera he snuck into the facility, and snapped a picture of it. The next page had a paragraph written. Slater repositioned his hands to read. "The cure to fix all of this is on the other side of the city, but it is infected by demon souls who will kill you if you try to make your way there. The cure is written in a book that is kept safe in a small cottage on the the other side of the city. If you try to get there, you will die, you have been warned"

Slater gulped, snapping a picture of that description too. He has to get out to find this cure. But he can't go alone. He closed the book and knelt down putting it under his bed, to return it the next night. While he was shoving it far down under his bed, it hit the wall gently. But it didn't make the sound of a wall. He shone his light, realizing it was a vent. His nosy self, opened the vent, making his way through. Spider webs covered the corners and it was fairly soggy in there aswell. Making his way out, he couldn't believe what his eyes just witnessed...

All the people that were taken to get their "injection" had heart moniters that weren't beeping. A needle stuck in their arms. They were dead. Slater knew it. He knew it. The injection wasn't to make them "immune" it was to kill them. Demons' orders, taking over bodies. He snapped a quick picture of the lifeless bodies. Now Slater knew he had to save humanity. But who will he take with him on this deadly journey?
