(AN: From here on the novel will be in first person)
'So, turns out I'm nearly blind, I have... horns? Apparently, that "figure" is my dad. I need to learn their language and how to walk again, that way I can convey my blindness while also looking like a prodigy. If I get a reputation for getting things faster than other kids, my otherworldly knowledge will shock everyone less.'
Suddenly a wave of lethargy enveloped me and I felt a presence against my mind, wiping away all my unnecessary memories. I forgot family, what I looked like, my crew, everything. Except for my studies and my mission. I fell asleep instantly.
------
Two days later I woke up with people standing over me.
*"He's awake!"* mom shouted
*"Really? I haven't finished making the spell to awaken him."* father didn't wait for an answer as he rushed to the crib
'I guess I should ease their worries.'
I started giggling and fumbling around like a madman.
*"Can he see us? He never follows me with his eyes."* Father asked, not knowing much about anatomy
*"Hmm, maybe..."*
Mother drew a rune in the air to test my vision.
'What's that strange light?'
*"Yeah, he seems to be mostly blind"* Mother said while drawing another rune"*
My vision painfully adjusted until I could clearly see.
'HUH?! I thought this world was on the brink of destruction! How did they cure blindness?!'
With my vision now being passable, I can see my parents. My mother has horns just like me, but they are shaped like a bull's. Her face is angular with sharp eyes with red irises, her wavy black hair conceals her horns somewhat but she would have to use a hat to completely hide them.
My father is wearing a wide brim hat with a tall cone in the center, his jawline is square and he has round eyes with piercing blue irises that seem to glow in the dark. I wanted to know what was under his hat so I grabbed its brim. I couldn't pull it off, but father didn't want me to rip his hat so he took it off revealing a short ginger haircut and two long gazelle-like horns.
*"It's only temporary, but we can give him glasses later."* Mother said
*"At least we know what's wrong."*
*"Yeah, I'm going to use a checkup spell on him now."*
After seeing her draw a rune on my chest with her finger, I panicked and retreated to a corner of my crib.
'What the hell is that?! How do you even make something like that?!'
After the initial panic, a warmth enveloped me and when I looked down I saw my insides. I took note of the fact that I only had one kidney.
'Why am I suddenly calm?'
The checkup spell wore off but I still felt the presence of a rune on me, and when I turned my head I noticed one on my shoulder that quickly faded.
'I'll have to learn more about this strange phenomenon, for now, I'm going to take a nap.'
After extensive practice, I was able to start walking on my own at around two months, and I even learned some new words. My mouth still wasn't strong enough to say anything until 6 months but by then I could understand most words.
After being praised as a talent, Mother insisted I try to read. Mother would take me with her to the market where I would try to read signs and ask her what words mean. One day she decided to bring home a slate and taught me more conventionally. by age 3 I was literate.
"Mother, what is that flashy thing you do with the letter in the air?"
"It's called Eneru, and it's the practice of bending the will of the world."
'Hmm, this Eneru should come in handy later then'
I adjusted the glasses on my face and asked "Mother, will I be able to use Eneru?"
"We will know if you can when your Spirit core develops."
"Mother, what is a Spirit Core?"
Mother drew a checkup rune on my chest and pointed at the place where my second kidney would go and said "A Spirit Core goes here and develops from any time between ten and thirteen. It's where a spirit lives inside of you and shares its manipulation of the world's energy. You will learn more when you go to school."
'I'll have to find something else to do while I wait for my Core to develop, I want to get stronger, but that one god told me I couldn't achieve my objective by myself so I'll make friends in the meantime. Maybe even develop some gadgets.'
And so I did, I'm too young to use tools so I made my first goal to find another kid who wants to be an adventurer.
"Father, can I go play with the other kids?"
"Sure, go on ahead kiddo, I'll be watching you from the porch" he responded with a little too much youth for his age.
'Our house was one of the bigger on our street, but that wasn't saying much because it only had four rooms. One was my room, another was my parents' room, then we had a kitchen and dining room attached to the last room that I wasn't allowed in. Our porch had a swing on it that father was fond of, so he didn't mind sitting on the porch.'
I saw a group of kids playing on the road and I approached them.
"Heyo!" I shouted from a short distance away.
My horns have been growing for a while now and resembled a ram's. The group I went towards saw me and ran away, seemingly afraid.
"Hey! Where are you going?"
My father appeared next to me and explained
"Those are human kids, they can't use Eneru so their parents teach them to fear our horns."
"Father, What are we?"
"We are naturals, our kind has always walked Rengi alongside the humans. We naturals gained a Spirit Core at the expense of vitality, humans are almost always stronger and faster than us but can't cast spells or affect the World Energy. We naturals are stronger with Humans at our side, and they are stronger with us, but we are different so each of us fears the other."
From the west a voice called out "Hey!"
In that direction I saw a young boy looking towards me.
"... However, not everyone feels the same way and many, like me, believe in cooperation and teach their kids to be the same way. Go on. Your new friend is waiting."
