Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20:SURPRISE?

The mages began to chant the spells. Most were familiar with simple alchemy.

A few were able to use middle-class magic.

The magic continued to hit the plant stems that we're forming a giant wall around the victims.

The knights managed to cut weakened branches creating a narrow path.

"Lieutenant Johannes! Everyone hurry up and get out of there."

Chaol called out to those remaining within the wall.

"Chaol!Look out!"Canute alerted.

The flesh eater had already opened its mouth and attacked Chaol.

"Chaol!"

No sign of the free-spirited and kind-hearted Chaol.

"No!Not Chaol too..."Canute trembled losing awareness of his surrounding.

—" How will I face Raymond?... It can't be."

He gritted his teeth. A dark aura slowly surrounded him.

—"You had guts to act rashly around me?"

Raising his hand there appeared a magic circle.

A relatively huge ball of purple fire appeared.

Without an ounce of hesitation, he leaped and attacked the head of the plant killing it in an instant.

Breathing heavily due to the sudden consumption of a large amount of mana at one time, he collapsed on his knees.

In front of him on the forest floor lay the dead plant slowly rotting away.

Everyone remained silent. Some were struck with shock. some we're dumbfounded while others gaped in awe.No one said a word.

"Sir Canute!The monster's dead?"

The archmage suddenly turned around to catch the glimpse of the familiar voice.

"Chaol! But how?"

"Illusion magic" He grinned.

"I had to distract it from you. Plan successful."

"Canute reclined on the ground.

" You didn't even spare the soul."

"..."

Chaol burst out laughing.

"It's hilarious to find you worried."

"Of course. You think that cold-hearted bastard would spare me if I returned alone?"

"He would."

"What...?"

"That's half-truth. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself. But he would forgive you."

Canute stared in disbelief. Then suddenly recalled the story, Johannes told him the night before.

They watched the knights helping others. Most devoured ended up being dead. While many of them were wounded.

"If only we had a healer."

". ... "

Chaol smiled bitterly.

"We had one....by our side."
