Chapter 6 - The Attack 2

You see Nick back at your hometown in your room. He's resting his arm against your window frame and staring only at you and he wants you, only you. You open your eyes and you snap out of it.

(What was that?)

You shake your head and start with the surgery. You get complicated after complicated surgeries but you do the fastest and the best way you know possible. You've been busy for hours on end. Ever so often the boat rocks and then you fall over the patient to protect the open cavity. You hear the constant shots from and to the ship but lately, it's been quiet. You see the sun shining high in the sky, through the small windows.

You just finished your last patient. You go to wash up and you sit down for the first time since you woke up. You fall your head against the wall and close your eyes. Then, all of a sudden, you understand what just happened. You feel the tears fall down your cheeks but there's no emotion behind it. You feel your body is exhausted and weak.

(Oh god...we could've died)

"Dr. McPherson?"

You stand up and quickly wipe the tears off your cheeks.

"We thought you might be hungry"

"Yes very much, please"

"We send it to your quarters and Dr. Naidoo said that you should go and rest. She said she's got this"

"No! I should be here and help!" You stand up and all of a sudden all your adrenaline has worked out and you collapse to the floor. Tracy takes you by the arms and helps you up.

"Dr. McPherson, I'm no doctor but if I were, I would prescribe that you rest and eat. You're no use to us like this. There are no surgeries right now and everyone you operated on, is doing very well"

"But what about you and Nita?"

"I'll be relieved a little bit later and Dr. Naidoo already rested and Dr. Dickson are here too. Please we need you probably soon again, please rest"

"Okay...I get it"

She helps you out of the operating room through the sickbay. You hear some people clapping hands and others cheering. You look around to see what's going on and to your surprise, they're cheering you. They all smile and air pump, some put their hands in a praying position and mouths "Thank you". You feel the tears falling again down your cheeks.

"Thank you guys but it's not just me it's everyone, please, give yourselves a round of applause. Well done guys, you did so so good!"

You clap your hands in the air. You turn and go back to your room. They left a tray of food for you next to your bed but you're too tired and fall on your bed, sleeping almost instantly.

NICK'S POINT OF VIEW

After many days away from the base, Nick is on his way back to the ship on the helicopter. He had a tough few days but as always was successful in the mission they had to do. He finds himself thinking of you often. He knows that he shouldn't but deep inside him, he can't wait to see you again. Then the familiar sound of the radio calls.

"Bravo1, do you read?"

"Base, Lima Charlie (Loud and clear)"

"What's your ETA? (estimate time of arrival)"

"03:00, over"

"We're under attack!!"

He can't believe what he just heard and his heart just sank into his shoes. His home is being invaded. He turns to his team.

"The base is under attack. We need to come from the northside and jump in. Cheetah approach. Gear up!"

He's busy checking his guns and armor when something interrupts his thoughts.

(Fuck! If they've touched you, I'll kill them. I'm coming...Kim!)

His team is all gear up and guns are loaded. They all know exactly what they need to do to defuse the situation. Nick's team is the best team on the ship. It's dark still and they are closing in. They go into stealth mode. The helicopter goes low enough for them to jump into the water close to the ship. They swim to the floating boat that has been lowered for them. They use the cover of the night to maneuver to the enemy ship, entering the enemy ship.

They work their way from the deck of the ship to the control room through a series of silent gunshots and cracking of necks, making sure not to be detected. They've reached their objective and radio the helicopter.

"Air support, do you copy?"

"Bravo1, Lima Charlie, over"

"Airstrike when ready, over"

"Roger, over"

Suddenly the air is lit up with gunfire from the helicopter. The people on the ship are crying out and Nick hears how the metal is breaking as the bullets pierce through the ship's armor. Nick and his team file one line and open the door to the rest of the ship, they shoot and fight their way through the ship, destroying everything and everyone as they go through.

They get to the mess hall of the ship and encounter a few soldiers. They duck, roll, and shoot as they end the soldiers' lives. Nick grabs a table as a shield and shoots a few soldiers but one of the bullets ricochet off the wall and pierce his shoulder. He just winces and then attacks, with full force, the soldier that shot him and make sure he won't shoot a gun ever again. They then go through the ship with extreme stealth and excellence until there are no more sounds of gunfire.

"Base, sector clear, over"

They get outside and the sun is high in the sky. They can now see the damage to your ship. Nick looks at the ship and everything within him wants to jump into the ocean and swim over to your ship to see if you're okay because the ship looks as if no one could've survived on it.

"Permission to come aboard, over?"

He knows that he must follow the procedure that he was been trained to do, day in and day out. But why does it feel as if he doesn't want to do anything that requires him to do things slowly, that keeps him away from where he wants to be, where he needs to be. He needs to know if you're okay.

"Bravo1, permission granted, over"
