Chapter 28 - Confirmation

"Fuck!" Nick slaps his fist on the bed, watch as Helena walks away.

"You know, you don't exactly pay for medical care around here but I'm sure we can arrange payment for a broken bed. What did the bed do to you?"

Exhilaration fills his heart as the familiar smell of lavender tickles his senses. Then he sees you, loveliness does not describe the beauty that stands next to his bed. He watches as your long blond hair falls perfectly into place over your shoulder. He wants to reach for your lost strain of hair and move the lock of hair out of your face. He's pulled back to reality as he remembers you have someone waiting for you back home. He tries to steady his voice and sound as normal as possible, changing the subject.

"Where did you go? I woke up and you're gone?"

KIM'S POINT OF VIEW

You see him crashing his fist against the bed and you wonder what made him this upset. You left him for a few hours and then you come back finding him upset. You stare at the muscles in the arm that makes the fist and you get a flashback of when you had to dress his wound and how his sculpted body showed himself off to you. Then he sees you and you keep walking as if you weren't staring.

"Oh, I was feeling better and then thought that I would go to my tent to freshen up. How are you feeling? You look upset?"

"I'm feeling much better, thank you…guess I'm just a little frustrated with this leg of mine. How long before I can walk again?"

"It depends on how fast you heal. Can I have a look, do you mind?"

"Please, please have a look"

You swallow hard and put gloves on your hands. You slowly remove the covers and then pull up his boxers. You see his chiseled leg bulging with every movement and you use all your self-control to focus on the job you need to do. You start to remove the dressing. You speak softly to him.

"Are you doing okay?"

"I'm hardly feeling anything, please carry on"

You finally got the dressing off and then inspect the wound. "It looks good, Nick. Really good. You're an exceptional fast healer"

"So, how much time do you give me, Doc?"

"Well, I'd say in four days you should be walking good enough to get back to work. That's if you stay off the leg for now and only use it when you really need to"

"That's really good news, thank you. I was meaning to ask you, would you please tell me what exactly did you do to save my life?"

Nick just asked you to tell him what you did for him. You don't want him to feel as if he needs to repay you for what you did for him. He deserves so much more. You decide to make it off as something small.

"Oh, I just gave you some blood"

"Just some blood?...and then you went into cardiac arrest?"

"Well, you see…"

Nick adjusts himself and looks at you expectantly. Then Tracy hurries to your way.

"I'm sorry to bother you Dr. McPherson but we need you now!"

You give Tracy one look, you know that this look is serious. This could be a matter of life and death. You've work side by side with her these last few days and you've grown to know the different looks on her face. This one means no games.

"I'll be right there"

You turn back to Nick. "I'm so sorry, I have to-"

He cuts you off with his hand in the air. "I get it, go!"

"Thank you!" You give him one last smile and then disappear behind the curtain where the more serious patients lay.

NICK'S POINT OF VIEW

He watches as you leave him to attend to someone else. He lays back into his pillow and he feels calmness coming over him just knowing that you're there. He smiles and closes his eyes. Then he hears someone clearing his throat. He opens his eyes and sees Sergeant John standing next to him.

"Sir! Master Chief Sir!"

"At ease Sergeant"

"Thank you, sir"

"What brings you here, Sergeant?"

"Sir, we have a little problem to discuss"

"Well, Sergeant, I've got nowhere to go and I've got all day. Let me hear it"

Nick and John have been in service together for almost three years now. Nick knows John well and you could say they're best friends. Nick knows this look on John's face and this usually means no good news.

"We found the body of your attacker and our suspensions were confirmed. They're Iraqi drug lords. Which means we're in deep trouble. You know that they aren't going to give up and they'll start to attack the camp, little by little until we're off the island"

"Damn…I was afraid this was the case. Okay, did you report this to the Admiral?"

"Yes, sir!"

"I need to speak to the Admiral"

He tries to get up but his wound shoots an unbearable pain through his leg. He winces a little.

"Sir, may I have permission to help you?"

"That would be great, Sergeant, thank you"

Nick put his arm around John's neck and they walk slowly toward the Admiral's tent.

KIM'S POINT OF VIEW

You just finished cutting Mark's wound open again to release pressure from his wound. Mark isn't looking so good but you're all trying your best to save him. Helena was there too but she looked lost working with her patient. You were there just in time to help out. You walk back to hopefully just get a glimpse of Nick. You know that Helena isn't far behind you, so you keep your distance.

You get close to his bed and what you see, shock you to your core. His bed is empty. You take a look at his chart and see if someone discharged him but there's no signature or new notes on his chart. Then you take a deep breath and realize he must be in the restroom. You turn around and walk back to attend to your patients and see if John needs another surgery.

"What do you think you're doing?"

Nita puts a hand on your shoulder. She looks pissed off.

"What do you mean? I'm attending to my patients?"

"Didn't I specifically told you to do exactly what I say if you were going to do that ridiculous thing you did for Nick?"

You smile back at Nita. "Nita, do you believe I'm a doctor?"

She frowns and then answers "Yes? Why?"

"Then I should know when I'm able to stand up and start working again, don't you think?"

Nita sighs. "Now, you listen to me doctor…did you know that doctors make the worst patients? They always think they know better than the doctor attending to them? You can't discharge yourself, you know the protocol, don't you?"

"Well, technically, I'm still in the hospital and didn't leave yet? I'm just not laying down at the moment?"

You smile shyly at her and look at her through your lashes, trying to give her a puppy dog face and maybe get into her good graces.

"You know that you're driving me crazy right? Firstly you wanted to risk your life and now you don't listen to your doctor?"

"I know you won't be able to have an interesting life if I wasn't there to mess things up for you? Your life would've been so boring, don't you agree?"

She slaps you softly on the shoulder. "Okay, then answer me this. How are you feeling really?"

"Nita, I promise you, I feel like a new person. Every part of me feels good and ready"

"Okay, but I'm shadowing you today to see if you're having any symptoms and you're not getting out of this, missy!"

You hold your hands up in surrender.

"Okay, Okay! So by the way, you know that you're not my admitting doctor, after all. What happened to Helena?"
