My heavy heart felt lighter by the time my sobs came down to occasional sniffs. What hurt now was my head from all the crying. 

My phone rang on the sofa.

I wiped off my already drying tears and went to it. It was from Bridget. I perched on the arm of the sofa and cleared my throat. "What's up, Bee?"

"Hey." She drew out the 'hey' as if unsure. "Your voice sounds... Have you been crying?"

My eyes squeezed shut and I rubbed my temples. I've been caught, lying would not get me out but I went for it. "Nah, just the onions Mom made me dice."

"Quit lying to me, Alex. You rarely help her out in the kitchen and even when you do, you take a break when she starts up on the onions, so talk less of dicing it up yourself."

"Oh, Bee, I miss you." Tears threatened to start again.
