Lucas tried to scratch his nose as he wiggled his upper lip against it, his eyes focused on the road as he heard his friend, Brandon, blabber about something that uninterested him. His hand was surprisingly tight around the steering wheel, his whole body stiff from past events.
"Luke! You listenin'?"
Lucas quickly glanced at his friend before quietly sighing. "Sorry, I dosed off."
"What's wrong with you man? You've been dosing off a lot lately. How you going to get the ladies at the party tonight?!"
The road was empty with a right turn a bit far, allowing Lucas to glance at his friend with a tired look. "I'm not interested. Besides, aren't we in some type of lockdown. I don't think we should be out."
"I don't see anything. They probably overreacted when the school bombing happened."
"I mean...they have the right to do so. What if it happens again?"
Lucas took the turn, his eyes going wide at the sight in front of him.
"Yeah, you have a point—WHAT IS THAT?!"
The car stopped, Lucas immediately closing his headlights in fear of grabbing it's attention.
It's large shadow covered the car and it's surrounding, it's purple figure towering over the trees. The slimy texture that covered it dropped on to the ground with big splats like heavy rain. The hump on it's curved back made it look bigger and taller. It crushed everything it stepped on, and it was walking right towards the two boys.
"Lucas."
"Y-yeah?"
"it's walking towards us."
"I know."
"Then what are you doing! Drive the opposite way! Are you trying to get us killed?"
He quickly came back into his senses and turned the car to the way they had just come from. With that, the creature had noticed them and started running towards them.
"Holy—Lucas drive you moron!"
He stepped on the pedal as the car speed. From the mirror, he could see the creature trying to catch up as it pushed tree's aside.
"Lucas, you fool. Open the headlights or we're going to crash!"
"Oh, shit. Right." He started panicking as he listened to what Brandon said.
"We are so going to die! I'm going to die, and you're going to die. We're all going to die," Brandon cried holding on to dear life as the car was speeding beyond the limit.
"No were not!"
Lucas took a sharp turn, finding a forest in front of him.
"We're going to crash, man! Slow down!"
"The forest is our best choice at the moment. We'll lose the thing easier that way."
With a single deep breath, Lucas speed up into the forest, avoiding trees and bumps.
Brandon turned, his eyes still wide. "It's right behind us!"
"Damn it!" Lucas took another turn, driving deeper into the forest. He stopped in an area where a lot of bushes stayed. They both watched as the creature slowly scanned the area, searching for any movement.
"Stop whimpering, we're fine," Lucas whispered, patting Brandon's back.
They waited for a few more minutes before the creature finally gave up and turned to the main roads.
"We didn't die?" Brandon asked surprised.
"Of course we didn't. You are unbelievable to think that we were going to die."
"Did you see how big it was?! It could swallow us like pills, no need to munch on us."
Lucas stared at his friend with disbelieve, before sitting again on his seat and starting the car.
Brandon caught his breath, tying his seating belt while Lucas got back on the main road. "Where are we going?"
"I'm dropping you home and I'm going to the chemistry labs. I have to tell Elijah about this!"
"Who is Elijah?"
"He's a chemist."
The drive back home took a bit longer as they tried to avoid police cars on patrols to insure that all citizens were at home. They safely made it back into the neighborhood, Lucas pulling up to the familiar house.
"Now go. It's best if you stay home."
Brandon nodded knowingly. "Sure. You stay safe."
they did their small handshake before silence lingered. Brandon finally got the courage to get out of the car and run into his house, hands in pocket.
As soon as his best friend entered the house safely, Lucas drove towards the lab.
