Chapter 11 - True Magic

Chris was floating in the abyss, Abraxios' massive body before him. Chris looked up into his massive purple eye and was terrified.

"What do you mean she's incompetent? And who is she?"

"The little fox girl."

"I know two fox girls."

"The one that matters."

Chris blinked in surprise at Abraxios' savagery.

"Well there's no need to be rude, they have names you know."

"And why would I care to know insects names?"

Chris suddenly got slightly offended as he realized not once had Abraxios said his name.

"Let alone why would I learn the name of an insect that knows nothing of magic, but claims to."

Chris screwed up his face in confusion.

"Seemed like she knew a thing or two to me."

"Of course it would seem that way to you you're a weak simpleton."

"You know for someone who wants my help, you have a weird way of showing it."

"Want help? From you? Ha! That's hysterical! I just need a puppet to do my dirty work, and just can't be bothered to do it myself through you."

"What if I said no? What would you do then?"

Abraxios looked down at Chris's puny form menacingly

"Did you not hear me when I said through you?"

Suddenly Chris's eyes start glowing like they did the night he killed the three strangers. Without wanting to his hand curled up into a fist and started moving up and down repeatedly. Then he started grinning evilly uncontrollably which soon turned to maniacal laughter. And he began speaking.

"Do you understand now! Perhaps you'll choose your words more carefully in the future!"

As Chris spoke it seemed his voice seemed to shift from himself to Abraxios until his eyes stopped glowing. After getting control back he panic pats himself all over. To make sure he's still himself. Still shaking he looks back up at Abraxios, a new, unhealthy, amount of fear beaten into him.

"Now where were we? Ah, yes, we were talking about the incompetence of your 'teacher'. You see remaining calm is not all there is to magic. As a matter of fact in some cases it is completely unnecessary."

Chris started blinking confusedly.

"Huh."

Abraxios looks down at him disappointedly.

"Do try to keep up, I will only help you this once. If you are to accomplish what I wish then I need you to understand the truth of magic."

"Why are you helping me?"

Abraxios' eye took on a steely gaze.

"Another interruption and I shall end your very existence. Just shut it and take my knowledge you ungrateful fool."

Freezing to his core Chris wisely clamps his mouth shut. Observing his silence he continues.

"To be honest you were doing a better job teaching yourself magic because you learned it as you understood it. Using magic is different for every person, those with a calm nature in calm surroundings living a calm life normally learn to use magic in a calm manner. On the opposite side of the spectrum, those who have a violent nature, with violent surroundings, and a violent life typically learn to use magic to accomplish violent ends. Are you following?"

Chris has actually become completely enraptured by what Abraxios was saying and nodded quickly. Excited for him to go on.

"Good. In short every person learns, sees, feels, and all together experiences magic differently and there is no one way to do magic. Those who take on teachers only weaken their magic potential in doing so, because they are learning how a different person uses magic. Back when this was thoroughly understood you could find great magicians everywhere. For each of them learned magic as they knew it, only those who have magic through bonding cannot teach themselves magic. For they are borrowing another persons magic. Which is actually what overtime killed the true magic of our world. People started depending on other people to give them magic and overtime this lead to the misconception that one needed to be taught magic."

"Now that being said I cannot teach you magic the way you use magic. I know that the girl made you think you must not have magic but you do. She simply can't see it because your core is on the magic plane of your home world and while it was locked there here it is free to be used however you please. Learning magic will still take you sometime, time that you don't have, so as you've surprisingly astutely realized I have indeed bonded with you. This means you don't just have magic as you understand it, but as I understand it. So, to ensure you are ready to start my assignment for you as soon as possible I will show you magic as I understand it. This might hurt a bit, and while you might be able to understand magic as I do I still want you to practice your magic. One of the reasons I choose you was for your magic so you better not disappoint me."

Slowly one of Abraxios' massive hands began rising into the air and the massive clawed hand on the end came toward Chris. Gently his foreclaw touched against Chris's forehead. Agony shot through his body and he started convulsing as Abraxios showed him how he understood magic. He felt like he was learning centuries worth of knowledge in an instant and he was afraid his head might explode. After what felt like an eternity Abraxios removed his claw and the pain slowly left Chris's body. With out meaning to Chris sagged forward with relief. He looked up at Abraxios curiously.

"Can I speak?"

He rolled his eyes in response.

"If you must."

"What is it exactly you want me to accomplish?"

Abraxios looked at him considering how to respond.

"First I want you to become stronger, what I just taught you will help, but I want you even stronger. While the people of today are nothing like the people of the past there are still some of considerable strength. Once I give you your assignment and you start completing it, there is no doubt in my mind they will oppose you. As for your true assignment, you're not ready to learn of it yet."

Chris was frustrated by his response but nodded anyway. Accepting the older beings wisdom on the matter.

"To help you get stronger I want you to ask the other fox girl to teach you how to fight. She might not look it but she was once a warrior."

"Victoria was a warrior!?"

Abraxios raised a scaly eyebrow, which would've been impossible for him to do if this was Earth.

"You think she lives in a nice house like that on her own without having paid for it. She is also well funded from the time she spent fighting for that village."

Chris just blinked, startled to learn about that side of Victoria.

"Now if that is all you should be on your way."

As he said that Abraxios started to fade from Chris's mind.

"Wait!"

Abraxios stopped and looked back at Chris's small form.

"Thank you for your help."

Abraxios blinked in surprise, then a thunderous booming sound could be heard coming from him repeatedly. Chris was forced to cover his ears but assumed that he had amused him. Abraxios faded away and Chris opened his eyes on his broken bed.
