MARY
The moment the question was out of Mary Earle's mouth, she instantly wanted to take it back.
Her heart hammered hard against her chest but it was too late. She could only silently wish that Eve somehow didn't hear it. However, even that too was impossible.
It was just the two of them who were in the laboratory and her voice was loud enough. Mary was certain that if someone was to eavesdrop on them, surely they would have heard her too.
Her anxiety didn't die down as Eve merely stared at her. Mary felt like she was trying to assess her, her eyes imploring Mary's.
Gulping, Mary Earle tried to calm her nerves down. With all her might, she was trying not to be too shaken by the fact that her question was left unanswered.
"Well," she stated, wanting to break the awkward silence that was beginning to hang around the both of them.
"A clone," Mary blinked, uncertain if she had heard her right, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
