CAL RHETT'S POV
Days passed by without any change. Life seemed to be like a broken record. Just repeating the same thing over and over again.
I'm hoping that today will be different. That Something different may happen.
I laced my boots and stood from the couch. The December air hit me as soon as I opened the door. I walked outside as I zipped up my jacket. The fresh snow from last night stuck to my boots as I walked.
The strangest thing here is that there's barely any of the infected anymore. We'll that's not too strange anymore. I'm not complaining though. Life is a whole lot easier without them getting in the way every time I turn around. That's the only noteworthy thing right now.
I went along, doing my 'normal thing', which is climbing up on a rooftop and watching the city, the snow fall, or the clouds. Yeah my life is boring, I know.
I walked over to the building where I usually go everyday. I would go there a lot with my family before the infected took over. It was a small, family owned restaurant. It's easy to get up on the roof because there's a dumpster that I get up on and the building isn't that tall. From the dumpster I can pull myself up onto the roof. I would say I can jump pretty high, but there's not anyone else to compare to.
Once I got up there, I ran across and jumped and grabbed hold of vines that were hanging on the building by the restaurant. I know the vines can support my weight because I've done this countless times. Also a fall from this height would be a broken leg at worst.
There's a certain place where I go where I can see a view of Lake Murray and a good view of the city. I'm not sure what the building was for back before all this happened.
So I went as I normally do, jumping and climbing across the rooftops. Yeah, I probably could just go to the building and climb up the vines to the top and it would be a lot easier, but I prefer getting there this way.
I got to the building and climbed up the vines until I could pull myself up on the roof.
Vines cover the majority of the city, at this point, but once again, I'm not complaining. They're really useful for my everyday plans.
I sit up here for hours, thinking. There's not really anything else to do besides searching abandoned houses and stores for food, clothing, and weapons. Days go by slow and nothing really happens, which makes the days go by slower.
It's been a long time since I've seen another human being. Sometimes I think I'm the last one. It really feels that way sometimes, but deep down there's a hope that I'm not. I know I'm not. There's no way I'm the last one. There has to be at least one more person on the planet, right?
After a bit of sitting up there, it started snowing again. Normally it didn't snow much in Lexington, but it's just my luck that it snows nearly once a week in December. Sometimes it's just a small frost, but I'm afraid of a blizzard coming through soon. I have a feeling there's gonna be one.
I ran my fingers through my copper hair, which had little bits a white snow in it, and decided to go home early today.
I had turned to grab on to the vines and make my way down when I saw something in the distance. I thought it was an infected at first, one of the very few here, but it was much more lively and intelligent. I felt the hope of other people rise up and intensify.
I kept watching the person, or infected, as they entered a house.
After watching for them a couple minutes, I climbed down the vines and snuck around to the house. I don't want them to see me in case they aren't friendly, or it's one of the infected.
I was knelt under a window that was in the living room, where the person, I've confirmed it, is. I slowly rose up to where I could see inside.
In the house was a man who was walking up the stairs with a knife in hand. He's Probably checking for any of them.
I decided that this guy is probably not friendly and I'd rather not risk it, so I kept moving. I was planning on going to see if I could find any more supplies I may need if a blizzard does come through.
The snow got a bit heavier as I walked, but store wasn't too far now.
The inside of the old store wasn't much warmer, due to the broken windows and doors, but it was better than out there.
If there was a blizzard, I'd probably need more food. I know there's canned food on the shelves, so I start walking that way.
After I got to the isle, I sat my unzipped bag down and filled it with as much as I could, then put it back on my shoulders.
Back outside, the snow had gotten much heavier and it was getting hard to see. I started heading home, not wanting to be out here longer than I needed.
"Hey!" a voice shouted.
I can't tell where they're coming from due to the snow, but I pulled my steel staff from where it's strapped on my backpack.
I kept looking around until I finally made out a figure getting closer. I held the staff ready.
"Woah! I mean no harm!" he shouted, "I'm just out looking for food. Me and my girlfriend just came into town from Columbia." He noticed I stayed silent and added, "you can trust us."
"How do I know that?" I finally respond.
"I don't even have a weapon and you have a staff. I wouldn't have come up to you if I was trying to harm you."
"You had a buck knife earlier when you were checking the house you are staying in."
"Wait you knew I was here?"
"I don't know if you've noticed yet," I start, "but there's not anyone else here. I would notice if someone else was."
"Well, some people may not notice."
"True. Can't argue with that," I shrugged.
"So will you help us?"
"I figure if you were going to try something you would have done it by now. If you do try something, it'll be the last thing you ever do."
"Point taken."
"I'll take you to my house because I have my supplies there. We need to hurry though. I don't think we'll want to be out in this for much longer. The house you guys were at isn't too far from mine."
"We're not that far from the house we're in either. I'm going to run in and get what we had and Kara, then I'll be back out."
"Alright," I reply as he entered the house. After a couple of minutes he was back out with a woman named Kara, apparently.
"We need to get going now. He's gonna lead us there," the man explained to Kara.
