"Just tell me!" Nuna demanded, raising her voice—it was the first time in a long time that Hailey had heard this tone addressed to her. Her grandmother closed her eyes as if impatiently waiting for an answer she would rather not hear. Her hands were now tightly balled into fists at her sides, her knuckles white.
"No! Of course not, Nuna," Hailey hastened to assure her grandmother as her heart beat faster. This was a conversation she never thought they would ever be having. "I would never do that," she added.
Her grandmother put both her hands over her face, muffling the sigh that she let out—the sound was a giveaway of her instant relief; letting go of the weight that she had been carrying on her shoulders this whole time.
